Riders need to realise that unless you are at the top, then speedway is not a full time living. Back in the 1960's and 1970's when crowds were much higher, only the top riders were full time.

iainb 4,863 Posted August 17, 2021 This is bizarre we've all congregated on the Eastbourne thread having exactly the same discussions we've had on many other threads... It's like we're all in the hospital waiting room awaiting news on the patient!

Ian has just confirmed that he has not left and there will be a factual statement released tonight. He has also stated that whilst there are known cash flow issues, everybody will be paid their money. Lets wait for the statement, as he has also said that lots of the rumours are inaccurate. When I was involved in arranging a deal for a Scandinavian rider 10 years ago at Premier League level it was £40 a point with a £120 guarantee. On top of that his flights to and from were paid for plus mileage. A mechanic was provided by the club as well as a tyre. But how much of what a rider earns goes straight out of the sport to engine tuners etc. All of these Formula Ford riders are trying to maintain Formula 1 kit and the whole sport in this country suffers for it in more ways than one.

First sign of something positive for a couple of days, fingers crossed Eastbourne can pull through. (The rumoured stadium rent issue is odd to me and would only make sense if the landlords feel they can replace the speedway rent with something more profitable, surely an income stream is better than no income ?) Marky_Mark 55 Posted August 17, 2021 Yes seems positive to me, also stated that the company is trading and will be funded. Reason for ‘silence’ is due to dawn to dusk days finding funds and solutions. Statement will be released hopefully tonight once it’s been discussed with relevant parties.
allthegearbutnaeidea 1,711 Posted August 17, 2021 How are they suddenly in this much financial trouble, you can understand Newcastle and Birmingham due to low crowds, but the numbers I’m reading for Eastie crowds seem double what the other two were getting? But if the wages at Eastie are double of those at other clubs then the Math still wont add up will it... not that I know what Eastie are paying just to say that if the income doesn't exceed the expenditure than you end up in the Red.... Exactly... UK Speedway had a very good operating model which gave lads who worked during the day a chance to earn "one weeks worth of money" from their day job every night they rode... Ride four nights a week and they were earning one months wages... Seemed to work pretty well...
Hackett 220 Posted August 17, 2021 Eastbourne have always said needs over 1000 to break even - so 1200+ best case scenario. Last couple of meetings to the eye; numbers have been down on the start of the season. Potentially may look better as still limited numbers in grandstand so people scattered around other parts of stadium bends 3+4 .... Shall await statement - all have better idea then.
