But how did Labour leave us after ten years in government?

Did we have more hospitals than we could ever need?

in 2010 Labour left the coffers and the country in a better position than we are now   :) (Expect you swallowed the "there's no money in the till" hook line and sinker")

We are short of good hospitals and staff. But as you know the Buffon wants Trumps friends running our hospitals.

Didn’t know you normally self-isolated with diarrhoea symptoms!!

You might if it’s profuse enough...usually in the smallest room with lots of loo roll to hand,  seat belt on to strap you on!

Only today I've had news hitting home with a friend of mine who is in her late sixties having contracted it after losing her son just before Chridtmas because of Covid. She's in a bad way apparently. Also just heard from someone who I used to work with who now lives in Berkshire having contracted it from his partner who are both in their twenties.

As proven by the NHS’s own occupancy statistics: less than 90% overall.

For every hospital at 100% some must be at 80%!

Edit - for my own sanity, i've deleted what i just wrote as i don't really want a reply.  I've just read back thru quite a few pages of this thread and it's appalling the views some people are displaying here.

He obviously works at one of the busy hospitals rather than one that is not busy at all.

He works at Addenbrooke's Hospital and Cambridge University, not a hospital currently overrun. He had his knuckles wrapped last summer over a foul mouthed tweet he put out about social distancing...

I don't monitor this thread a lot, and i can see why.

Expanded icu capacity is being used when it comes to these figures so they aren't really comparable to any other year.

Hospitals have never routinely expanded that capacity, and have never closed so many regular parts of their sites, so comparing like for like years doesn't give a realistic picture.

When comparing occupancy it doesn’t matter if ICU capacity has been expanded because you’re just comparing bed numbers, wherever they are in the hospital.

I can though appreciate that ICU work might be more time-consuming for nurses.

That said, official figures say that 25% of Covid hospital cases came in for something else and caught Covid in hospital.

So new hospitalisations with Covid are only at about 15,000.

And if, on the other hand, thousands of elective operations are being cancelled that is creating the space for Covid patients.

So, if overall occupancy is down and deaths are no more than usual, the only problem is with hotspots in certain hospitals, and that is no different from other years.

Electives are being generally cancelled to free up staff from theatres and recovery wards.

Icu is supposed to be 1 nurse 1 patient, but it's 1/3 or  1/4 it seems at the mo, so the extra 100 or whatever it is that are freed up are upskilled and spread around the areas suffering most.

All patients were having to be tested before coming in anyway and with the rising positives, lots were being delayed as it was.

Not good, but can see why they're doing it.

For those that are interested his views are on page 5 of Cambridge News. I do not claim they are right or they  are wrong, only that as an ICU consultant it is just possible he may know  a bit about the subject. The fact he may have had his knuckles rapped  neither increases or decreases the validity of what he says
