Maybe the battle is not won, but the war may soon  be over. ;)

Here’s an example of how the government twisted the truth in its presentation yesterday.

They said “one in five local authorities reported an increase in cases”, they showed these coloured purple on a map of the UK and they said that this was evidence that the battle was not won and that the virus could take off again if we don’t comply with the restrictions.

It was a clear scare tactic.

Swindon was one of the local authorities reporting an “increase”.

But what increase are we talking about?

Firstly, it’s an increase in the number of positive tests on the previous week.  It went up from 91 per 100,000 people to 124 per 100,000 people, so in Swindon’s population of 220,000 it went from 200 people to 272 people. Possibly concerning.

But, secondly, you have to take into account the fact that these figures were based only on test results and that there are many more people who have the virus but don’t go for tests.  The ONS says that 1 in 145 people in England currently has the virus, down from 1 in 115 the previous week.

So Swindon has, in all probability, gone down from 1,913 people with the virus to 1,517 people, not increased from 200 to 272 as per the test results only measure!

It just goes to show that we cannot trust a government that switches between different measures to justify different things, positive test results to scaremonger and ONS surveys to show how well the lockdown is doing!

Scandalous.

So how does anybody know how many people have the virus but don't go for tests? Was it you who posted a few days ago you had mild symptoms but went to work as usual? Did you tell any central collating agency? Was it noted anywhere?

If one in five local authorities did in fact report an increase in cases than there is nothing wrong with what was said at the presentation. The rest of your post is irrelevant.

Unless of course that fact does not prove the point you are making.

To do that would be a lie.

You compare it with the ONS estimates which the government also uses to prove its case when it suits them.

It’s disingenuous of the government to point to positive tests as suggesting one thing when it’s clear that ONS estimates prove the opposite.  The Imperial College figures do likewise.

The government has used one indicator, and ignored two others, to tell a lie and mislead the public.

“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.”

The point was that one in five local authorities reported an increase in cases which shows the battle is not won and the virus could take off again. That's could, not will. No problem there.

As BR posted above, the other figures are unknown, an estimate at best. They could be wildly out. At least positive tests are monitored somewhere.

Cases mean absolutely nothing. The PCR test has been demolished this week by the WHO, the Lancet and the BMJ...

Whereas pie-in-the-sky estimates plucked from nowhere in particular are accurate?

What's a doctor? How do you get to see one?

Did DC2 see one on his way to work as usual with his mild symptoms?
