iris123 15,491 Posted May 25 (edited) The people have made their choice Labor, Greens and climate promises As vote counting continued and Australia’s new leader Albanese took time out to attend the Quad security meeting in Tokyo, newly sworn in Treasurer Jim Chalmers reiterated to local media on Monday that the new government had no intentions of cutting new deals on emissions targets. However, minority party, the Greens, may be on track for a record election outcome. With the possibility of six seats in parliament, they’ve said they would use their increased power to push the government on more climate change. Either way, the Australian public has signaled through its election of a record number of climate change-focused candidates that it is keen on more climate action although it is unlikely the new government will budge on existing promises, Danielle Wood, CEO of think tank Grattan Institute told CNBC on Monday. Political analyst and professor at the Australian National University’s Australian Studies Institute Mark Kenny agreed. “Conventional wisdom held that voters would put climate concerns to one side if they felt green-policies might erode their buying power through higher electricity prices,” Kenny said. “Election 2022 disproved this thesis. Voters are worried about soaring costs but care also about climate and sustainability.” Edited May 25 by iris123 Share this post Link to post
iris123 15,491 Posted May 25 And leaders of the EU have also spoken about pushing forward with renewables at Davos Micheál Martin, Taoiseach of Ireland, said of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: “The people of Europe have spoken. Enough is enough.” In response there is much stronger unanimity between member states and more support than ever to accept the accession of new members. He continued: “We see the EU’s future in terms of the green economy and in terms of the digitalization but also in terms of enlargement.” Share this post Link to post

iris123 15,491 Posted May 25 Oh dear, wonder what Lee Hurst or a merchant banker thinks A safety consultant at oil and gas giant Shell has stopped working for the firm, as she accused its top executives of failing to protect the environment. In a post on the professional networking platform LinkedIn, Caroline Dennett said the company is "causing extreme harms to our climate, environment, nature and to people". It has drawn over 10,000 likes and has been shared more than 1,200 times. In response, Shell reaffirmed its aim to become carbon neutral by 2050. This week, Ms Dennett said she had emailed executives and 1,400 employees and contractors at Shell to detail her intentions to leave the firm. "I can no longer work for a company that ignores all the alarms and dismisses the risks of climate change and ecological collapse," Ms Dennett wrote. "Because, contrary to Shell's public expressions around 'net zero', they are not winding down on oil and gas, but planning to explore and extract much more," she added. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61574686 Share this post Link to post

This is the science The downward linear trend in April sea ice extent over the 44-year-satellite record is 37,900 square kilometers (14,600 square miles) per year, or 2.6 percent per decade relative to the 1981 to 2010 average (Figure 3). Based on the linear trend, since 1979, April has lost 1.68 million square kilometers (649,000 square miles) of sea ice. This is equivalent to the size of the state of Alaska. http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ Share this post Link to post

Blupanther 20,371 Posted May 26 Where did all the CO2 come from to cause the great medieval warming phase i wonder. We had warm periods, which were even called 'optima' during the Roman and Medieval time, and now this is supposed to be a 'catastrophe'. To me it looks like around every 1000 years it gets warmer in a cyclical pattern, from the cycles of our local Star, The Sun, and nothing whatsoever to do with “Man Made” CO2 BS...
