Qualifying Round in Sweden Cancelled

Given the ongoing circumstances and restrictions associated with the Coronavirus pandemic, the FIM, the Swedish Motorcycling Federation (SVEMO) and the local organiser regret to announce the cancellation of the FIM Ice Speedway World Championship Qualifying Round originally set to take place on 16 January 2021 in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.

Unfortunately it will not be possible to reschedule the Qualifying Round; all parties continue to monitor the situation and information will be communicated accordingly if further changes to the 2021 Calendar are made.

I see from the Heerenveen site that they are not planning any event for next year as it's not viable without spectators. Feint hopes of a last minute trip to Berlin if it happens, if not then that's going to be two years without ice speedway :(

Need to get to at least two events in 2022

Is the Finnish rider at 16 the one who rode years ago or his son ?

Aki Ala-Riihimäki rode years ago, had back problems, a stroke of somesort but now back at it. Think he’s now in his early 50’s. Atte Suolammi is about 17.

Aki Ala-Riihimäki was a top ice racer prior to the millennium. I do not know his back story nearly as well as f-s-p, but he rode in the Nordic Championship pre-Covid and ended up the highest placed Finnish rider, so he has earned his place on merit.

Atte Suolammi is very young, but showed promise last winter.

At the moment, Finnish ice racing seems stuck between these two polar points, with the likes of Aakko having retired, Jarf seemingly not interested in riding abroad and others not able to make an international breakthrough.

Thanks for the replies, i remember seeing him race at Assen, fairplay to him for making a comeback at his age after those setbacks

The meeting from Shadrinsk was incorrectly billed as a 12.00 Moscow time start (9.00am UK time) R&R.

It appears it started at 8.00am UK time so it's already underway.
