No think this is because of this WADA sanction.

A cunning disguise !

They are hoping that no one will notice its in Russia.

Clever lot at BSI.

Italy cancelled - Unsurprising and I don't think too many of the riders will be too disappointed!

Wonder if the plan is still to run a 10 round series as before, or whether a decision will be made like 2020 . . .

More info here, including interview with Castagna: http://www.speedway-press.ru/2021/03/marRUStogliattigp.html (use online translator)

They seem hopeful on staging a GP in Togliatti, although without Russian flags.

Fairly similar to his reported comments in the Speedway Star this week.

I'm honestly not sure how or why Castagna thinks speedway is somehow exempt from the Wada ban; however, unlike the Ice Speedway World Final, it is hardly as if alternative venues do not exist, or alternatively the option of running one less GP.

Probably for the same reason as F1 (1 round in Russia) and MXGP (2 rounds in Russia) think they are "exempt" and still have events on their calendars.

The ruling seems to have stated that events in Russia must be cancelled "unless it is legally or practically impossible to do so."

If contracts were agreed before the ban was implemented, it may not be possible to get out of these without legal implications, in which case they may be able to go ahead.

"

Due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 in Germany, the FIM, BSI, DMSB and the local venue have decided to cancel the 2021 German FIM Speedway Grand Prix scheduled to take place at Bergring Arena on May 22, 2021.

The decision has been made with the health and safety of our riders, staff and fans in mind.

“We are disappointed to have to cancel the German SGP due to the Covid-19 pandemic, making it impossible to run this event as we would have hoped. However, we are still committed to running 11 events in our 2021 season” said Paul Bellamy, Senior Vice President of Motorsports Events at IMG.

“We will be announcing more events and dates in the days to come, and thank our fans for their patience while we navigate these unpredictable times.”

If you have purchased a ticket to 2021 German FIM Speedway Grand Prix or have a ticket which rolled over from the 2020 event, an email will be sent to you shortly detailing how your refund will be issued.
