Most hated (respected) rider!!

Andy Galvin rode for the Dons a few times as a young kid, but when he came back riding for Hackney he used to wind the crowd up something rotten. Great box office, though

I remember a meeting at Long Eaton when Hackney were four down going into the last race. The home pair made the start and Andy tried to pass them up the inside going into turn three. He misjudged the pass, clipped one of them and all three clattered into the fence.

In one of the strangest refereeing decisions I've ever seen, the home pair were excluded, and the Kestrels cruised round for a 5 - 0 and a one point victory in the rerun, with Andy popping wheelies and waving to the home fans for all four laps!

The home crowd wanted to lynch him and there were some punchies thrown, but Andy loved a good scrap. I think a police escort was called to get him out the stadium.

He was public enemy number 1 at most tracks, but we loved him at Waterden Road!

It's a good theory, chunky, but I feel I must make an admission here and that is that I was never that keen on Peter Craven!

Well, he did threaten Mr Farndon's position as the best Englishman...

Still, had he sung in a group, you'd have been a fan!

He would certainly have made a good Pacemaker.

Galvin was a very good and very entertaining rider.

Did he end up serving time or am I imagining it?

I remember that I really disliked Charlie Monk....but, for the life of me, I can't remember why now!

I heard he wasn't keen on you either:D

I disliked many top riders, Fundin, Mauger, Olsen, Rickardsson, Nicki Pedersen, most Swedes, Danes, Americans, Aussies, but Briggo and Ashby were great as they rode for Swindon, and Knutson, Craven and Hancock were faves. Couldnt stand Rory Schlein.

Never liked Nicki Pedersen even when he rode for Oxford for a short while before being sacked. To use an Ice Hockey term he was a bit of a "Goon" always up for a 'niggle'.

Mauger always seemed to get the treatment at Swindon even before his incident with Kilby when he had to have a police escort out of the stadium.Preben Eriksen/ Tim Hunt were two riders i disliked both dirty riders Hunt as a partner at Reading was a nightmare to ride with.

Tim Hunt...yes a strange character. I've seen him carry out some bizzare moves on a bike like storming out of the pits at Reading whilst on two minutes and the bike hitting the inner kerb and leaping about three feet off the ground!

All the riders anyone have mentioned on here are OK in my book.....yes I understand why some of the comments are made. It took many years, like about 60 years for me to dislike one rider and one rider only so much and that is Nicki (not my fault) Pedersen, up to his usual stuff again today. Yes I know I will get the NP lovers saying how nice a person he is and he probably is OFF the track and then they will say he is just a "Hard" rider, whatever that means......Personally I would not use that word!

Having said that....he IS box office......I guess that is what Speedway is missing these days!

Great to see your post andout-glad you have survived COVID in Guelph. Further back -Norbold's post re Charlie Monk-bite your tongue Norman don't think you can be my friend anymore!!, Charlie a great rider,  one of my favourites felt so sorry when he missed out on the 1965 World Final-surely that was a questionable call when he was excluded in the British Final . He had the rep. of being the rider who beat Ivan the most time in the 1964 Prov. League-almost got the winners' spot in the 1964 PLRC. BTW that 1964 PLRC sounded like a hell of a good meeting-wish I could have seen it live. Some tremendous riders in it -Newcastle had four reps as I recall- Ivan, Bill Andrew (tough guy), veteran Ken Sharples and Pete Kelly who finished 4th after a run off for 3rd against Roy Trigg-another great. I reckon both Charlie and Roy would have graced a 1965 World Final (perhaps more so than vets like , Ken McKinlay, Jim Gooch and Reggie Luckhurst not to disrespect any of them). What a wonderful year 65 was.

Carl Askew "The Spear" some would say was a hard rider although I personally never saw much evidence when he rode for Oxford...perhaps in his early days as a "Brummie?"

I didn't mind him because he rode for us but Tommy Roper used to get the wrath of virtually every crowd when we followed the Aces away, he could be a tad dirty when the mood took him.

Another mention for Preben Ericksen(sp), never liked him, dirty bugger as my old man used to say.

Apparently he really got picked on at Plough Lane soon after he caused Kelvin Tatum's bad injury at Wolves by some of the Wimbledon riders who gave him a hard time.
