Unbalanced Team Performances

Recommended Posts

So now, I am interested in cases where most of the team DIDN'T pull their weight. I am not talking about a solo performance, but where two or three riders did the bulk of the scoring.

The one that always stood out for me was Swindon vs Eastbourne in 1980, where Gordon Kennett (21) and Kai Niemi (19) scored 40 points out of 46.

I just heard of a similar case where Gote Nordin and Jon Erskine scored 15 each for Newport, who only scored 33 at Wolves in 1965.

Are there any other REALLY top-heavy displays?

On a similar subject, I have two associated questions:

1) Have THREE members of a team ever scored a full 12-point maximum in the same match? Obviously, because of the format, I know it couldn't be the three regular heat-leader positions. And no, I am not including the standard 18-heat formula either.

2) Does anyone know the FEWEST number of individual heat winners in a match? Obviously, if there were three full maximums, then that would be four. Have there perhaps been two 18-point maximums in a 13-heat match? Or even an 18 and a 15?

In 1980, when Jiri Stancl and Ole Olsen recorded 15-point maximums on opposing sides (Reading vs Coventry), there were only four individual heat winners then. Bobby Schwartz (2) and Bernie Leigh were the others.

Glasgow v Long Eaton 28th May 1965, Willie Templeton 12, Bluey Scott 12, Charlie Monk 12 in a 60-18 win.

Thanks; I knew you'd have an answer!

I think you need to publish a book with all these quirky stats!

Ha ha, I don't think I've got time for that.

Obviously, the lower the team score, the easier it is for that to happen. It's those draws that impress me!

Blimey what were rest of scorers in the 3 Swindon matches. Started following them in 1968 when Briggo, Kilby, and Broady were heat leaders.

The first match I ever saw resulted in the score New Cross 48 Norwich 42. Ove Fundin scored 18 and Aub Lawson 16 for Norwich, so 34 out of theIr 42 points. Of the other 8, Reg Trott scored 4 and Derek Strutt 3.

Sheffield had Charlie Monk, John Dews and Brian Maxted score full maximums in a 54-24 win over Belle Vue in 1968.

Has any individual done better than Nigel Boocock scoring 16 out of 24 at Wimbledon the same season?. There was certainly one more occasion when he scored over half his teams points that season.

I

Not sure what the lowest number possible is, but in the Scunthorpe Newport match in 2006 only 5 different riders won a race.

Gordon Kennett scored a 21 point maximum and Kai Niemi 19 riding for Eastbourne  (both from seven rides) at Swindon in 1980 but the "Eagles" still lost 46-62!

I did mention that in the initial post, Steve!
