Sheffield v Peterborough 20.05.21

Recommended Posts

The promotion had to call this off early doors with the weather forecast as it was. There's always a good crowd come up from Peterborough and it was only fair to them to call it early. Gone are the days of Neil Machin and his, "it's definitely on." Only to get a crowd in and call it off at 8 - 8.15pm.

The rain has saved them from a mega loss with a severely restricted attendance limit, they deserve the opportunity to make money sod all to do with Machin, if the referee says it's on when he gets there and knocks it at 8.15 it's still nothing to do with Machin

Is there a rule, that after a certain time, only the ref can call it off?

Yes, the referee is responsible in most cases from when they arrive and commence their work but certainly no later than 1 hour before the advertised start time and in fairness some referees try to keep the meeting on until certain Australians start bleating.

Correct decision was made as it didn’t stop raining all night and continued today. Hope for better weather on Monday

Once the forecast had been issued at the weekend this meeting was never going to happen.

Until all restrictions on crowd size are lifted in mid june, any hint of rain ahead and a meeting will be off...unless a designated TV meeting. Why would any promoter run a meeting now with reduced crowds when he has a chance to put the meeting on in July/August with a full crowd in attendance...obviously they cant cancel every single meeting as there will be no time to fit in all the matches but I expect all clubs to have a a couple of rains offs prior to June 21st , makes financial sense. Also many will do it as early as they can for Monday meetings to save their riders the expense of flying over from Poland.

Not surprised at the call off bearing in mind the reduced capacity had to be outside ie no indoor viewing/catering/bars etc.

Not being from Sheffield you'll not know that Neil Machin was the previous promoter of Sheffield Speedway and he would have put on the clubs website that the meeting was on no matter what the weather. The point I was making was that you'd get people turning up for the meeting only for the officials to pull the plug on it after they'd paid to get in!

The call off of the meeting was to do with it raining all day nothing to do with reduce capacity. There’s no way the meeting could have gone ahead even if it was full capacity. As I’m aware the weather across the whole of the country has been wetter than the average May climate so I’d expect more to be cancelled due to the rain. Anybody speculating why the meeting was called off obviously live nowhere near the track.
