Riding with a countryman.

Recommended Posts

Welshmen, Eric Williams and Leo McAuliffe rode at 5 and 6 for New Cross in the early 60’s. Can anybody come up with a pairing from a country other than England, Australia, Sweden, etc. who have appeared together in the National or British League?

Collins and Harkins rode for Wembley if that counts as similar to Wales ? Although they also rode for Coatbridge as well with a few other Scots I think

The Edinburgh team of the 60's had the Templeton's, Jimmy Tannock. and George Hunter who were all Scotsmen and must have been paired together.

Although brought up in Wales, Leo was born in London (Westminster).

In 1966 Hungarians Sandor Levai and Laszlo Munkasci were paired together in one race in three meetings for Belle Vue, Levai riding at number 2 and Munkasci at reserve so they rode together in heat 4.

In 1956 three South Africans, Arthur Duncan, Neil Mortimer and Doug Davies, rode together (and at times were paired with each other) in the Birmingham team.

Doug Serrurier and Fred Wills from South Africa were occasionally paired together at Liverpool in 1949 and Serrurier was likewise paired with Buddy Fuller, also at Liverpool, in 1950.

Niemi and Koponen for Wimbledon.

...who, if I recall, were brother-in-laws?

Piet Seur and Frits Koppe at King's Lynn in 1978 (not sure whether in the same meeting?)

Henk Steman and Henny Kroeze at Bristol in 1978 (ditto)

Do you ever think about checking Speedway Researcher, Steve?

No to Seur and Koppe.

Steman spent several weeks at No. 5 - with R/R for Kroeze at No. 4!

They were finally due to ride together in Heat 8 - and were both replaced by tac subs!

They finally paired up in the reserve berths, and scored two 5-1's in their two home meetings...
