With only three Prem riders not in the Champ I can't really get my head round how it can be much more costly to ride in unless better riders are going to flock back next year. If it was much cheaper then admission prices would surely be much different between the leagues?

Poole moved down because they would save quite a bit of money though so there must be quite a difference financially.

@Skidder1 can correct me if I am wrong but I seem to remember a 30% decrease being banded around. It was the main reason Poole moved down along with the Weds night race nights. Although I guess it depends on what sort of pay riders like Stevie Worrall and Danny King are on too.

I wouldn't mind betting the top riders on the Champ are on similar money in both leagues. The race night thing is big for clubs who have always ridden on a particular evening I guess but with so much doubling up its essential that rave nights are kept separate.

It's also worth bearing in mind that several riders who were supposed to have raced here in 2020 didn't in 2021 ie Pedersen, Iversen, Klindt, Bjerre and their absence will have pushed costs down a bit.

As for Ipswich,, I want to see some new riders, or at least one,,, for eg, Mads Hansen or Francis Gusts,,, someone new and young that already performs to a decent level. I don't want to see the already tried and failed riders we will probably end up with yet again.

Obviously each club has a different cost base compared to other clubs, depending on all sorts of factors. Its not just about rider wages! The difference that I was told about (bearing in mind this is just one specific club) was that costs were one third less to race in the Championship than in the Premiership - both are 5-figure sums per week/meeting!

From my own knowledge, if a rider is riding in both leagues then the pay rates are very different!  Presumably because riders will strive to get what makes it pay for them in total - including the assurance of getting paid EVERY week! - so once they have a Premiership contract 'buttoned up' they will happily accept a reduced rate of pay in the Championship.

Of course there may also be other rider bonus incentives in both leagues, eg reaching the play-offs/winning the league/Cup etc which will tend to benefit the more successful clubs due to increased attendance income, as well as the riders - both of whom may benefit from additional sponsorship funding?!

How long have panthers not had a number 1 for?

One could argue - all season. But they seem to have done very well with six third heat-leaders and a rising star.

So maybe just maybe team building was wrong?

To be fair, the team building included Klindt (an Ipswich track specialist) at 1 until he dropped out on the eve of the season. We lost numerous meetings by only a handful of points, especially at home, when Crump or a guest scored only a few points. That makes all the difference in the world. Of course we’ll never fully know 100%, but if we’d had Klindt at 1 as originally planned, we’d almost certainly have far more points on the board than we currently have.

I also accept the point about Panthers doing brilliantly without a recognised number 1. But it’s pretty much a rare occurrence that this happens. Look at all the league winners over the years, and 99% of them have had good solid number 1’s.

Wasn't it Ipswich who were trying to sign Chris Holder but couldn't get his visa done quickly enough?!

Yes, but that was last year, not this.
Edit: It was actually the 2019 season, not the season that never was last year.
