Years ago riders could share a team berth, rule may have been dropped - but hasn't been announced! It's the same with doubling up, used to be 2 riders sharing a spot, then one rider only needed, but never announced 2 riders COULDN'T still share the team spot.

I'm sure both Mulford & Ablitt would prefer a full season of Champ racing, but if no one else came in for them, may settle for half the matches?

Im guessing had the RS system remained it could have worked but with rider averages it would complicate things. If you start with rider A & rider B both on 3.00 averages (for a start i don't know if both can be declared in a 1-7) anyway rider A ups average to 4.00, Rider B remains 3.00. That would mean B could cover for A but A couldn't cover for B (depending on who was in the declared 1-7).

It would also open up a whole can of worms with tracks signing specialists for example Plymouth may sign a riders for the home meetings who is great on small tracks and then want another for bigger away meetings, good exposure for both riders but creates a lack of cohesion in the team and potentially pushing the shortage of reserve riders even further.

1) is there a shortage of reserve riders currently, I wasn't aware of this?

2) regardless no rider would choose to share a spot with one team if another offered them a full time berth!

Apologies a shortage of reserve grade riders ready to move up (hence the predictable scrapping of the RS) at CL level.

One the outside that makes perfect sense but we both know that this good sport is often spoilt by excesses of money. If the riders were offered better deals than they would receive elsewhere for half the number of meetings it would easily be a consideration for some.

Im not saying the shared berth system is a bad idea (far from it) but as with all introductions it needs to be considered for the short, middle and long term rather than just implemented on a suck it and see basis (as per the current BSPL motto)

The RS could only have remained in the Champ if the gradings were changed, as most of last year's 1/2/3* riders are now 4* riders!

Well now that he is confirmed his fan club members can start thinking about their trips to Sandy Lane. Perhaps they could arrange to travel together in one car & save on fuel costs.:)

Nicholls is a great role model to lead the club....wish I didnt live so far from Oxford coz I'd definitely back them if B'ham don't return!

Mind you, the RS system was no better, 3* riders like Flint / Kemp / Bowtell allowed to guest for 1* riders who score nothing like Crang / Freeman!
