Sheffield v Ipswich 27 June.

Recommended Posts

I guess it's the age old problem of where do you prioritise your spending. Generally there will always be the option of spending on riders or equipment/track/infrastructure.

It's easy to understand why promoters spend on riders/wages etc as it gives them a better return assuming everything goes to plan. Until something like last night happens. My biggest bugbear about UK speedway is their total lack of spending when it comes to the tracks and equipment. they always seem to spend the absolute minimum, yet this is the stage the riders need to perform on. If they would divert a little more spending to wards the track and it's equipment, the show could be so much better. Patchy unprepared tracks and safety equipment on a shoe string, tapes that constantly malfunction, PA systems no one can hear. All these other things are part of the overall experience and they have an effect, but no, it's always straight out the door to get the top bidding on the best rider they can afford. They then have to ride on poorly prepared tracks with stuff breaking down left right and centre.

The balance is wrong.

That's is the very definition of a bodge job :P

Which is exactly how the whole sport in this country is run... one bodge job after another

We can accept defeat, however there was a real chance of getting an away point. It's odds on Doyle would have won heat 14 & 15. Given the up & down nights the other heat 15 contenders had had its perfectly possible Ipswich could have got a 5-1 in heat 15.

Fortunately for you guys, it's probably not going to make a jot of difference where you only have to finish in the top 4 of a 6 team league to potentially go on to be Champions

If you were at the meeting you would have seen the riders ready at the pit gate while our centre green announcer repeatedly told the crowd that the riders were ready but waiting for Eurosport to give them the nod to go to tapes.

Well that's clearly different to what the Sheffield promotions statement said, so the centre green announcer was misinforming the crowd... and was then all over Twitter saying how depressed he was with people's reactions. If he'd informed the crowd of the actual facts, maybe there would have been more understanding.

Surely if you have a section of air fence that’s different to the norm then you have a spare for that specific section just in case  for that 1 moment you will need it.
not having spares lies solely on Sheffield promotion.

I believe there's one going cheap up at Newcastle

Well done but if you read my post again I said a member of track staff explained it as he was part of the team to fix it and I also said on face book. You have very cleverly copy and pasted what our promoter said on our website 2 slightly different messages. Damien Bates has not gone into as thoroughly as the track staff member. But if it helps you sleep at night you believe what you want. End of the day we won so it’s another 3 points and your riders walked away with no lasting injuries so well done to the air fence

So now you are saying that you think that your own promoter doesn't know what the hell he is talking about - good to know ;):D

I’ve just re read my post and can’t see where I’ve put that but if that’s what you’ve read good for you. The track staff lad said that 2 bags were damaged and replaced within usual time scale. The 3rd bag which on the gate was severely damaged due to the impact of rider and bike   The blower feeding the fence was damaged due to air been forced back into the blower had to be replaced. The inner sock on this panel was also damaged. Apparently this hasn’t happened before so caused problems for our staff. The connections were also damaged. Now I don’t think mr Bates said that so there’s a slight difference in statements from track staff and promoter. So not your usual replace and blow up panel then was it and that’s why it took longer. Make of that what you will. Makes no odds to me who you believe. Hope this helps

Agree Charlie but as for who won its rather a moot  point, there was some good racing between the delays but the whole episode did no favours to the sport whatever the rights and wrongs .

Why is it a mooted point ? The point of the meeting is for someone to win someone to lose. Top 2 teams in league giving there all. Good meeting unfortunately drawn out due to circumstances. At the end of the meeting my summary was we won and go top and fortunately for Ipswich their riders walked away so that’s a result for both wouldnt you say? Thank god for the air fence doing it’s job

Blimey Jake must wonder what is going on, he has only been riding for Sheffield a short while, misses a meeting and already out of a job. Sedgeman riding well but is he better than Jake Allen? Jake shouldn't be out for long so could of just used guests until his return.

Apart from Adams retirement in his first race last night, he’s finished either first of second in every meeting at Sheffield apart from the season opener.

just saying.

The stats tend to disprove your assertion. The role of the heat leader (a bit like an opening batsman in cricket) is to get points on the board early on, to get the match off to a good start and ensure the team is not playing catch-up later on. Sheffield’s heat leaders clearly aren’t taking full advantage of their first races to give the team a head’s start. In the 11 league and cup matches this season the three heat leaders of Holder, Musielak and Ellis have, in their respective first races, finished in the following placings:

HOLDER:
1st places: 2 at home, 0 away, total 2
2nd places:  2 at home, 0 away, total 2
3rd places: 2 at home, 2 away, total 4
4th places: 0 at home, 2away (inc. 1 disqualification), total 2
(NB Holder did not race at Ipswich)
Home record: 12 points out of a potential 18 (66.7%)
Away record: 2 points out of a potential 12 (16.7%)
Overall record: 14 points out of a potential 30 (46.7%)

MUSIELAK:
1st places: 1 at home, 2away, total 3
2nd places:  0 at home, 1 away, total 1
3rd places: 2 at home, 2 away, total 4
4th places: 3 at home, 0 away, total 3
Home Record: 5 points out of a potential 18 (27.8%)
Away record: 10 points out of a potential 15 (66.7%)
Overall record: 15 points out of a potential 33 (45.5%)

ELLIS:
1st places: 2 at home, 3 away, total 5
2nd places:  2 at home, 1 away, total 3
3rd places: 0 at home, 0 away, total 0
4th places: 2 at home, 1 away, total 3
Home Record: 10 points out of a potential 18 (55.6%)
Away record: 11 points out of a potential 15 (73.3%)
Overall record: 15 points out of a potential 33 (45.5%)

Holder has a very good home record (scoring 66.7% of his heat 1 points), but this drops to only 16.7% away from home. Musielak tends to do badly in heat 3 at home (scoring only 27.8%), but does far better away, improving that figure to 66.7%. Ellis has only a very average heat 4 success rate of 55.6% at home, but away from home is the best of all three, scoring 73.3% of his possible points in heat 4.

This explains why Sheffield are slow to score early on at home (e.g. scores even after heat 6 in the Ipswich match) and are prone to tight finishes away from home. If the three heat leaders could cut out the fourth places in heats 1, 3 and 4, the team would find itself much less on the back foot.

The data to support these conclusions is as follows:

HOLDER
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 4/4              3rd
Sheffield v Belle Vue 14/4                       3rd
Sheffield v Peterborough 5/5                 1st

Sheffield v Belle Vue 26/5                      1st
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 30/5           4th
Sheffield v Wolverhampton 9/6             3rd
Peterborough v Sheffield 13/6               3rd
Kings Lynn v Sheffield 23/6                    Disqualified
Sheffield v Ipswich 27/6                         2nd

MUSIELAK
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 4/4             1st
Sheffield v Belle Vue 14/4                      3rd
Sheffield v Peterborough 5/5                 1st
Ipswich v Tigers 16/5                              3rd
Sheffield v Wolverhampton 19/5           3rd
Sheffield v Belle Vue 26/5                       4th
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 30/5           2nd
Sheffield v Wolverhampton 9/6             4th
Peterborough v Sheffield 13/6               1st
Kings Lynn v Sheffield 23/6                    3rd
Sheffield v Ipswich 27/6                         4th

ELLIS
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 4/4            1st
Sheffield v Belle Vue 14/4                     4th
Sheffield v Peterborough 5/5                2nd
Ipswich v Sheffield 16/5                        1st
Sheffield v Wolverhampton 19/5          2nd
Sheffield v Belle Vue 26/5                     1st
Wolverhampton v Sheffield 30/5          4th
Sheffield v Wolverhampton 9/6            1st
Peterborough v Sheffield 13/6              2nd
Kings Lynn v Sheffield 23/6                   1st
Sheffield v Ipswich 27/6                        4th

Bit hasty then as they may have riders out of form later in the season.
