Received a phonecall this morning informing me that Wally Mawdsley has died after losing his battle against cancer.

Wally was in charge when I first really started going around 1980ish.

With the passing of Wally Mawdsley and on Sunday last, Ross Gilbertson, two Romford Bombers, one promoter, one rider. Thanks guys because without you I would have never had a love affair with speedway, especially the Romford Bombers, would have never met the Mrs [don’t answer that] had a speedway mad daughter and never met so many fantastic people, thanks guys because without you none the above would have been possible.

A good man and and great manager , knew the rules inside out. Does anyone remember the time he sent out a rider to replace Mauger ( think it was either Chris Julian of Frank Shuter ) who was having bike probs , and then went thru the tapes , enabling Mauger to get his bike sorted out and take his place in the re-run ?

The tricks that man would play to get his team to win would fill hundreds of pages on here.

Never a favourite of mine,but you cant deny the major force he played in British Speedway.

Well remembered as the Falcons promoter when I was a very young lad.

I'll never forget Wally, as he was the man who started my on off love affair with speedway. 1973 and Exeter Falcons sign this Ivan Mauger bloke who I had spied on Blue Peter with a gold bike.

Having convinced Dad to take me to the County Ground to have a look I was completely hooked and for two hours every Monday for the next few years I was able to escape the horrible town I lived in in Devon and enter another world...the League win in 74 many happy away trips none of which would have happened if Wally hadn't signed the man who became a God to me and countless others !!!

Ironic that I read this on the day the team I now follow Mildenhall seem to have been saved so my rediscovered love for the sport can continue for a tenth summer....now all I need to hear is that the Falcons will fly again soon !!

Yep I remember him as Canterbury promoter as well but that's another story ........

RIP Wally. Had a lot to do with him when at Newport and also used to go to Romford and travel down with Wally and Pete Lansdale.
