I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in Cearns' initial planning application. I'll have a search and see if I can find it.

It goes back to the time when, after the Dons were put at out a Plough Lane, a search was on to find a new home and one of the projected ideas was - as I recall it - to not have an area name for the side but just call them the Dons, rather similar to what happens in rugby union with names like the Wasps, Harlequins, etc. rolleyes.gif

This is probably a link to when another group with Plough Lane connections was interested in staging speedway at Sittingbourne a few years ago.

Correct, the original plan was for Ian Perkin to promote speedway at Central Park. This plan was scuppered by a current promoter who told Cearns to run it himself. The same promoter then popped up on Cearns subsequent planning application.

Well the statement by Roger Cearns shows the following quote from the application in September 2008 -

"Held from mid March to October, each year, once a week, the sport like football is divided into leagues and families follow their local team (probably in this case the Kent Dons) at home and away meeting."

The full link is here (scroll about half way down to the document STATEMENT OF ROGER CEARNS

That is true (obviously, as you are correctly quoting from the planning application) but I know in conversation with Roger that he's not that fixed on the Dons as the name for the side and I'd personally be surprised if he would go with that name. It's after all not the most inspiring of nicknames and doesn't really ring true...

Kent Kestrels sounds a LOT better!!! icon_smile_wink.gif icon_smile_approve.gif

Surely if he has been regarded as something of a snob by some the Kent Kings would be more apt? icon_lol.gif
