  1. Boston were covered by Screensport many times in the 80's. I know for certain that 1984 Edinburgh 1986 Poole, Rye House and Long Eaton were filmed. One of them meetings were scrubbed off the master tape. I have 'em all somewhere.

Incidentally when Tommy Rander and his company Transmission TV and Media provided the pictures in the late 80's Mike Bennett, Warwick Mead and myself were amongst the staff. Clive Fisher did the commentary.

Mike Bennett worked for Paul Bonner in 1987 the year when British League coverage overtook National League.

I can remember Edwin Overland, Dave Lanning, Chris French and others also providing commentary. Dave Lanning for me the voice of TV speedway, but Edwin didn't do a bad job either.

I would be interested to see footage from the following tracks that I visited but are now long gone.

Weymouth, Scunthorpe (Both Quibell and Ashby), Birmingham (Old Perry Barr).

  2. I announced at the Groveway in the mid eighties. Without breaching too much confidentiality the crowds simply weren't good enough to keep it going.

The move to Elfield Park didn't improve matters and problems with the design of the place, principally the drainage made the situation far worse and eventually caused problems with the authorities.

Like so many failed tracks they simply weren't making enough money despite the huge efforts of promoters like Ted Jarvis and Terry Cheney and their many helpers.

I was at Mk most weeks in the late 80's with Mike Bennett and to be honest crowds were better than a lot of tracks.

The Groveway ended because the stadium owners wanted them out.

Elfield Park - great track was always getting vandalised. Team Man is the one you want for info.

  3. Just back from Coventry, what a masive disappointment.

TRACK - seemed too slick, virtually no passing. It was poor racing most of the time, whoever gated won most of the heats. One good race between Rymel & Hans.

PROGRAM - £5 rip off job. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy a £1 scorecard, particulary for those with kids. When you have paid £30+ to get in it's just a bit OTT

TEAM - we were truly shocking on what was a home track for all the riders

Nicholls - back from a seperated shoulder ( is that a dislocation?) so may have been feeling that but looked to miss just about every gate. No dirt for a known racer.

Bomber - hardly make a gate & with no dirt he was off form. BIke looked to be oozing smoke on 4th ride, packed up the next

Richardson - seem to lack speed

Stead - oh dear, why was he there in the first place ? At this level you win ziltch by locking up on every corner

Allen - did well in the main, battled hard

GRUB - pretty darn good & good value

    Expensive admission.

Program Rubbish difficult to write in some heats.

Souvenir stall - Ditto, expensive and poor choice.

Tack - slick, however everyone but GB appeared to get by riders.

    Team - Abysmal.

Practice is it true that Team GB arrived at tea time and the others spent the afternoon practising.

    Presentation - Very poor.

  4. Not exactly a neutral track

IF anyone should have this event it SHOULD be Sittingbourne 'cos they need it

I'd agree with Sittingbourne getting it if nothing else to try and get some people to visit the track who never had before. As this is a shared event though they will benefit exactly the same wherever it is held.

But the call about neutral tracks, well Scunthorpe fans didn't exactly complain when they held the pairs.

My big fear is that there may be no League next year and the event won't be held.

  5. Just exactly how many maximum wins has there been?

Scunthorpe recorded one over Newport a couple of years ago, likewise K Lynn did the same to Sheffield last year.

I remember Boston having 12 5-1's v Scunthorpe many years ago, the 4-2 happened when a home rider had an EF.

  6. I understand. But can't you just cut out expenditure on the wife... or re-direct 16 quid of her annual allowance to a year's Backtrack subscription. She'll love you for it!

Being involved in two other sports as well, one in the management has already grabbed that 16 quid mate.

  7. I tell you what . . . if you're home, say, around 3-ish this Sunday, I'll pop over and read the article to you! It'll save us having to print more than just a few copies!

Sorry but I don't buy the magazine and that's that. Don't even buy the Star. Having to pay for the wife and 5 kids doesn't half make a dent in your wages.

  8. From the Backtrack article I get.........

    1983 Ipswich

    1984-1986 Kings Lynn

    1987-1988 Wimbledon

    1989 Peterborough

    1990 Milton Keynes.

Obviously BOSTON 1986 - was awesome that season. I am also sure he did two stints at Peterborough.

As I don't read Backtrack, could someone let us know how he is. Got to know Kev in 1986, but didn't see him after 1990. Spoke to Andy Hines last year.

  9. thats how i remember it .. i thought 1988 would happen at Canterbury until things came out in the press later on.

To be honest, if this had been pushed and heard by the elected members of the council it may have carried on. Council officers do not have the power to refuse on their own.

I have done some research on this one and am still baffled how easy Canterbury were allowed to die. Used to enjoy it there. anyone seen the ZZ Top boys lately

  10. When Boston closed in 1987 the track record was 60.0 (Definately)held by Steve Lomas since 1980 (I believe).

Incidently the last rider to win a race was Gordon Kennett of Eastbourne.

  11. Any idea what the price for a child is at Thorpe Park, Alton Towers or Drayton Manor?  I've not been to the latter two for a few years now but I know it was quite expensive then. The comparisons may help to put things into perspective.

Actually not very much for under 5's as they aren't allowed on white knuckle rides.

  12. Opening Times

    Date Time

    1st March to 31 October  09:30 - 18:00

    1st November to 28 February  10:00 - 17:00

    Ticket Costs

    Adult  £12.00

    Child (2 - 15 years) £9.00

    Senior Citizen  £9.00

    Guest with disability  £6.00

    Family of 2 (1 Adult & 1 child)  £20.00

    Family of 4 (2 Adults & 2 Children) £40.00

You can't get a ticket just for the Museum; you have to pay the park entrance as above.

Sorry, but no way am I paying 67 quid for my family to get in. Also, I think that anywhere that charges 9 quid for under 5's to get in should seriously review their pricing policy.
