Exactly why I couldn't really give a stuff who wins the league this year. A season of patched up teams made up of the nearest odds and sods to be found. Yes, in a sport like speedway injuries will always play a part, but this season has really demonstrated how on its arse the sport at the top level is.

Lost interest in the sport over the tactical joker decided final in 2006, which ironically Sky still show as if injustice was something special to be celebrated. League speedway is past its sell by date anyway, only the grand prix worth watching , at least you get more than one decent race every meeting.

  2. Coventry deserve their title and the comments in Poole's program are Matt's opinion. I do however feel that rules do need to be changed for next season so that the strategy to win the league doesn't become to drop averages, bring in new riders, scrape into the play offs and win it all. Perhaps having riders race all year on their starting average is one option though a rider genuinely losing form may then find himself unemployable if dropped.

Indeed - Coventry would have been negligent had they not ensured their 6 point man continued at reserve. Every other team in the league would have done the same. However this just shows why so many sports fans refuse to take speedway seriously, although I suspect many Liverpool fans might take heart from where Coventry were early in the season and wonder if they could replace Lucas with Rooney.... (except of course football doesn't have riders averages than can be manipulated to suit.

  3. Can I offer congratulations to the 3 man Peterborough team who managed to run a very strong Coventry team to within 6 points. The home team may have dropped a ricket with poor track preparation but at least three of the lower order gave it 100% nonetheless.

Should be a great, close, final. My overiding wish is that neither side has to sully the occasion by getting the vile black and white helmet colour out.

  4. The joker is there to make the scores closer and the meeting more interesting, it does not make the racing better. All this is fair enough if the powers that be just want speedway to be an entertainment, however this is short sighted, as speedway would be better served if what should be the most important meeting in the calander was taken seriously by the media. The Joker ensures this will never happen.

In truth the joker(s) has never once revived a one sided speedway meeting, but has been used on numerous occasions to allow almost evenly matched teams to produce a completely unjust result, often in critical matches. Yesterday was a clear example of this, with the most blatant of course being in 2006.

All well within the rules, and I suppose it can be fairly said that, like Reading three years ago, Jason Crump rode honestly and fairly to win his heat, and in doing so naively played right into the opponent's hands.

  5. I'm sure I heard Kelvin say (during a race) that Danny King was overtaken by both the swedes

But was this the heat when Crump rode like an honorary Swede though, in shepherding Lindback home for the win? (possibly a tactical sub for Hansy, who usually fulfils that role) Then to be absolutely fair he did *perhaps* go to the British pits and wish us good luck, which was nice , if about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

  6. The whole idea that the team spirit is so wonderful is hilarious, when the adrenalin dies down the only thing on the minds of Richardson, Harris and Woffinden will be "if it wasn't for the TWO WASTERS, i'd be in the final on saturday.

Team spirit only works when a degree of success is achieved.

To be honest none of the team, with possible exception of Rico (who had the misfortune to come up against the only Aussie who was still trying) did well enough in the fifth, and crucial, round of heats.

King got done up like a kipper by AJ otherwise he might have got 2 vital points, however after his excellent effort at peterborough was fully entitled to get his chance tonight, and very unfair to label either him or Bridger as wasters....

  7. TBH I thought she did really well tonight. My family usually tune in on a Monday just to laugh at her interviewing (there not speedway fans) but she did well and she suits the presenting role better I think.

With Nigel Shouty Man Pearson and Kelvin Tell You What Tatum I don't think she has anything to apologise for to be honest.

  8. Agree....... Team reserves are a must and 3 rides would stop any team trying to gain by naming one of their top riders.

The current situation is ridiculous, although caused by Poland abusing the previous rule a couple of season's back.

Made even worse by the tactical joker rule. Anyone watching speedway for first time and seeing the combination of these two rules would almost certainly write the sport off as mickey mouse.

That said I expect Russia would have won anyway.

p.s. does anyone in the world NOT know how old Emil is by now ??????????????

  9. Nicki Pedersen should be fined or even banned from the next gp for his outrage at last nights gp. He should not be allowed to tell the referee that this will be his last gp or swear on live t.v. and not recieve any punishment. Does Nicki now run the gp's with Ole Olsen?

Thought the referee is always right, at least wasn't that Nicki's position when he got away with it in Cardiff last year?

    RACE NIGHT: Thursday

MARCH OUT MUSIC: Don't know the name, but the one they used to play at ABC Saturday morning Pictures

Oh, and it's 1972, and I'm 16 again, carefree and with hair.

  11. Spot on - 1973 Daily Mirror sponsored tournament around the UK tracks. England, Australia, NZ, Russia, Poland, Sweden and Norway/Denmark. One big group of 7, rode each other once over a 2-3 week period. Matches were over the 13 heat format.

The final was a 39-39 draw, PC beat MIchanek in a runoff at Wembley after Anders knocked him off and was excluded.

Not sure combined teams add much credibility to a World Cup tournament.

Well remember that tournament and being on the bend where the Michanek/Collins incident took place. Having watched replay on youtube that decision could easily have gone either way. Excellent summer of speedway.

How strange to look back just 35 years and Denmark had to combine with Norway to put a team out, given the strength in depth they have today (also just as well since Norway have now thrown their lot in with Poland)

  12. You mentioned patriotism, if you are so patriotic (which I don't doubt for a single minute) why haven't you got any Brits in your team at Poole?

Having watched PL teams turn up at Smallmead every week with hardly any British riders (of which Woffinden, Haines and Barker have been the only ones you could see having the potential to step up successfully) it's more a question of where Elite League teams (and following on from that team GB) will get their British riders from in seasons to come.

Fans, of course, are notoriously patient with riders who fail to score points, even if they have undoubted potential..

  13. Hahaha, i think i might still get the chinese but i'll probably just go home after work, can't see much to get excited about (or worthwhile), trailing up to my folks' house to watch this i'm afraid!

It's about time that Betfair introduced a market on how many times Millard will utter the words "Norwegian riding under a Polish licence" on Thursday. (It must be his turn to commentate I'd have though)

Apart from that Sweden and Poland all the way, beyond that just hope GB can be competitive for the first three rounds at least.

  14. We've got a good team, no disrespect but we're not Hungary (even though their team spirit was better), so why can't we beat the Danes? They've beaten the riders before? So why do we think we can't beat them in the World Cup?

For a start Denmark don't have a weak link in their team, they also seem to have their machinery much better prepared, and obviously a much stronger team spirit and determination. They also seemed to know exactly the line to ride first bend from every gate position, whilst how many times did our boys get forced out into last place off first bend (on a track they were all supposed to know so well)?

As to GB you'd expect Nicholls, and Richardson, to have done much better last night.

Bomber has been largely off the pace at this level since he cost me over a ton with his last bend pass of Hancock at Cardiff last year, in that context he probably did almost OK.

Stead, I'm sorry to say, will never make the top level but as a home track heat leader gave a shockingly desperate performance, in a couple of heats riding the track like a second half junior who'd never seen it before

I'm not going to blame Allen, who was probably the only rider to perform to realistic expectations.

At least GB have the chance to salvage some pride from last night's terrible effort, however we at Reading know all about Jim's powers of motivation (and tactical nous) so it could be another painful evening's viewing
