KING OF THE GREAT INDOORS TOM NEAVE TAKES INTERNATIONAL SHORTTRACK TITLE Tom Neave added to his British Shorttrack title with a fantastic win in the Grand Final on Saturday, giving him the International Indoor title as well. 24 riders from all over the World came to Arena UK, Grantham to try to win the International Indoor title. After 9 heat races, 2 semi finals and the last chance race, it come down to 8 riders with the chance of taking the title. Tom Neave lined up on the front row next to STUK's number 1 Ade Collins and his twin brother Tim riding the team Suzuki bike, on row two was Ben Baker, Kevin Doolan, Peter Boast and the third row Glyn Pocklington and Tony Primmer. Ade made the hole shot with Tom Neave and Ben Baker hard on his tail. On lap two Collins and Neave pulled away from Baker who in turn had Boast, Doolan and Tim Neave pushing him hard and on lap 3 Tom made a fantastic move around the outside of Collins to take the lead. On lap 5 Tom began to pull a lead on Collins and Tim Neave had swept around the outside of Baker and Boast. By lap 8 Tom was still leaving Collins, who still had a couple of bike lengths in front of the other Neave and Baker lost another place this time to Kev Doolan Going into the last lap Tom had just about done the job with 4 bikes lead over Collins, who was now under pressure from Tim Neave and the battle was still raging between Doolan, Baker, Boast and now Pocklington. Tom took the Chequered flag for another fantastic win at Arena UK, to take the International Indoor Shorttrack title, Collins got a rare second in the end and Tim Neave took the last spot on the rostrum. England's Glyn Pocklington was the star performer with a paid max, including a couple great rides from the back to take wins. Ade Collins rode well for his 10 points and the Suzuki pairing of Tim Neave and Peter Boast with 9 points backed up Pocklington and Collins. Kevin Doolan, Damien koppe and Tony Primmer put up the strongest challenge to England, with all of them taking heat wins, but even Rest of World Team manager Richard Hollingsworth could not pull them out of trouble with some tactical riders thrown in. Rory, an Aussie International and King's Lynn Speedway's new signing for 2013, will join seven other International riders in the Rest of the World Team, against eight of England's best shorttrackers, which will be the first part of the days racing at Arena UK on the 23rd of Feb (this Saturday). Rory is really keen to give shorttrack a go, as unlike some of his fellow Aussie riders, Rory has never competed in the sport back in his homeland. Rory said ' A few of my mates Kev (Doolan) and Darcey (Ward) love it, so when Pete rang and asked me to ride, I thought why not see what it's all about. I'm happy to be part of a Team like in Speedway, then after the afternoon meeting, hopefully I'll be up to speed to make a challenge for the Individual Open International meeting in the evening. Mark Lemon as confirmed that he will be taken his place in the Rest of World Team in the first every indoor shorttrack Team event against England. Indoor meeting will be taking place at Arena uk,Grantham,Lincs,on Saturday 23rd February,this will be first time Aussie star will have ridden flattrack,but say's he his really looking forward to giving it a ago and getting warmed up for the season ahead. Also two x speedway riders coming out of retirement to take part in the event, is former Sheffield Star rider Robbie Kessler and and Poole rider Tony Primmer. The only rider to beat Tom during the heats was Scunthorpe's Speedway Ace Ashley Birks who also took two wins in his heat races. Other heat winners were Tom's twin brother Team Suzuki rider Tim, who had two wins, Shorttrack regular riders Glyn Pocklington also on two wins, and the big surprise of the day was Shorttrack's # 1 Ade Collins without a win in his 3 heat races. From the 32 rider field the top 16 points scorers from the heats progressed t the 8 lap Semi's. In Semi 1 it was Ashley Birks who got the hole shot, looking good for his first Shorttrack meeting, stretching the lead but by lap 6 Tom Neave started to pull him in and Pete Boast passed Rich Mason to take 3rd spot. On the last lap Tom was trying everything to get past Birks but didn't quite make it and Boast held on to take the last transfer spot to the final. In Semi 2 it was Alan Birtwistle who stole the show, taking a flag to flag win but he had his work cut out holding off the spectacular Aussie speedway star Kevin Doolan who was riding high and wide on every corner, trying to get a big run around outside of Birtwistle. Kev didn't quite get better of Birtwistle and had to settle for second spot and third went to Glyn Pocklington. The Last Chance race for the remaining final places saw frightening crash on the back straight on the first lap with Rich Mason and Tom Woolley going down, Mason ending up worse off with broken collar bone. In restart it was Ade Collins who hit the front for the first time, with young Tim Neave trying hard for first two laps to get past but Ade kept his cool and to make sure he took the win, Neave was second and Damien Koppe third and taking last spot for final was Darren Trapmore who managed to hold Ben Baker off. Tensions were running high for the start of the 12 lap Grand Final for British Indoor, with Ashley Birks on pole from Birtwistle and Tom Neave on the front row, Doolan, Boast and Pocklington behind the and Collins, Tim Neave, Koppe and Trapmore off the back row. On the first attempt pole man Ashley Birks and Birtwistle clashed, stopping the race, with Birks put back to the penalty line for the restart. On the first corner of the restart Collins went down, was hit by another rider and took no further part in the final. Only on the second restart did everyone get around the first corner safely, with Boastie and Birtwistle side by side for first lap,then Birtwistle just edged past Boast to take the lead, with Pocklington third Birks fourth, Tom Neave fifth and Doolan sixth. On lap 3 Birks went down on turn 3 and was out, with no chanceof winning after a great performance all day. Tom Neave continued to work his way through the field passing Pocklington and later a great out side line to pass on Boastie. By lap 10 Tom was putiing pressure on Birtwistle, Boastie was holding 3rd spot from Pocko who in turn was under pressure from Doolan. Damien hasn't returned to his native country this winter due to lack of funds but is keen to get some racing in before the coming Speedway Seaon and jumped at the chance to ride at British Indoor Championship Meeting. Before his speedway career got underway, he was the State dirttrack Champion for 5 years running and also gained National titles in Australia. Scunthorpe's Champion League rider signs up for the Great Indoors Ashley Birks has confirmed his entry into 'The Great Indoors' British Indoor Flattrack meeting on the 27th December. Ashley who was part of Scunthorpe's Premier League Champions Team this year, has just signed again for Scunthorpe and will be doubling up at Elite League Champions Swindon. Ashley was also very good at motocross in his youth so should have no problem adapting to Flattrack racing. He said " I'm good friends with Tom Woolley who is a star Flattrack rider and I've been keen to have go after watching him at Sheffield on his flattracker.'
