Over the weekend I have been reading Norman Jacobs excellent book 'Speedway in East Anglia and it reminded me that we were in the same situation in January 1996 when John Louis stated that he was 99% certain that there would be no speedway at Foxhall that year. The local MP at the time Jamie Cann together with the Evening Star mounted a campaign organizing public meetings and raising funds which allowed the club to continue.  The big difference between then and now is that then Ipswich had a local MP that cared about the town and its residents and we had a local newspaper that had actual investigative reporters.

    Great book. 😀

There was something said in the budget today about a big investment into the Peterborough Sports Quarter? Does that have any effect on the Panthers return?

No it's for a new swimming pool and sports centre.

Of course, Phil Morris might consider it as a possible venue…

People on this forum since day one bemoan promoters only having self interest at heart, not caring about speedway, not actually getting out and promoting it properly, Chris has poured his heart and soul into the witches and worked his arse off promoting the club gaining the support of multiple long term local sponsors, affiliated the witches with Ipswich Town to benefit each club promotionally and yet that’s not a well run club its luck 🤷‍♂️😂

Exactly that. One of the common themes on this Forum, not just this thread, is that promoters don't..er..promote the sport enough. They don't get enough publicity, they don't get sponsors, etc. Now, suddenly the one promoter who has been able to show what can be done in terms of publicity and gaining sponsorship is somehow the villain.

I'm sure it must have been a very hard decision for Chris to walk away from the club that has been his life, the club that was his dad's life, the club they both loved. And, of course, as an Ipswich supporter myself I am very concerned about its future, but I cannot imaging for one second that this was an easy decision for Chris and that he is the reason why British speedway is failing.

We need more promoters like Chris able to bring the supporters in and build good teams, not criticise him.

The amalgamated league as recommended by Lord Shawcross came into effect in 1965.
Norwich had already closed so no Ove and Knutsson retired after winning the world title in 1964. Briggs was the only really world class rider remaining from the original club of 5 greats.

Speedway didn’t collapse and in fact thrived with more opportunities to young riders and those who had been jogging along in the then lower provincial league.

That is true, though just a slight codicil: Ove Fundin came back and rode in the British League in 1966 and 1967, winning the World Championship in 1967. And in 1966, 1st, 2nd and 4th in the World Championship were all riding in the British League.

It worked then as the top riders didn’t have anywhere else to go and ride.

Some promoters didn’t like losing a rider to another club so as to even out teams.

As long as each club had a ‘top’ rider - the world class riders had diminished in numbers though as Craven Fundin Knutsson and Moore had gone. I think you have some similarities to what we may find now.

Ove Fundin rode for Norwich in 1964 and Bjorn Knutson for West Ham. Also Barry Briggs (World Champion in 1964) rode for Swindon.

So, what measures are available to be used, to "force" or incentivise a Championship club to walk the plank? I cant currently bring any to mind?

What i can see happening, is for the existing Championship clubs to break away from the BSPL and form their own organisation.

    Maybe this is already happening

    1964 all over again?

First and foremost for me he was a member of the Southampton team that won their only league title in 1962!

As well as New Cross, I also remember him as a member of the West Ham side in 1964 and 1971. So I win, two teams to one! 😁

  8. Today is Reg Luckhurst's 90th birthday. He rode for New Cross in the first match I ever saw. 11 May 1960, a Britannia Shield match against Norwich. He won his first race (Heat 4) and became my instant hero. At the time, he was New Cross reserve but, of course, later went on to become one of England's leading riders, qualifying for the 1965 World Championship final.

And then, of course, there was his recording career……

Agm is a closed shop,  all sat round the table deciding how they can line their own pockets whilst the sport goes further into decline.

That seems a bit contradictory. If they wanted to line their own pockets, surely the best way would be to stop the sport going into decline?
