I know this is an old post, but I can confirm that Alan Clegg's tragic death was as a result of the ridiculously placed lamp posts.

Hi,
Alan and my sister were planning to get engaged back in 1972. He spent more time at our house than his own home around then and was part of our family. He was like another brother to me. I was 13 at the time and can still see my sister's face when she returned that fateful day, having been to Hackney to watch Alan training. I've got a lovely photo of him and my sister having Christmas dinner at our house 2 weeks before, and I can even remember what I bought him as a present. Were you related to him, or friends?
