    Workington 2018 .

The constant bickering (on this site in particular) is boring the sh*t out of 99% of Comets and Glasgow fans alike. Could you all please give it a rest!
  2. Couldn't make it last night due to family 'last supper'/taking youngest to uni. today, but what a turn around, I, like probably everyone else did not expect that. Full marks to the Comets for a performance which must give them confidence for the further challenges that lie ahead. I must admit the thing that has struck me is how genuine the good wishes seem to have been from seemingly everyone, but particularly from the Monarchs fans who must have been gutted, but who have been so magnanimous in defeat. A big thank you from us Comets and it only goes to prove that whilst the banter does possibly occasionally appear to overstep the mark it is banter and we (the supporters) are part of one speedway family.
  3. Obviously the tie has gone, however so long as our riders are fit and with a good guest in Jake Allen who was excellent at DP recently it should still be an entertaining meeting. I am not knocking the Armadale track and blaming it for our stuffing tonight, but DP is one of the fairer tracks in the league which generally makes for closer meetings (leaving Newcastle's recent half a..ed attempts aside), and it would be nice to keep the unbeaten run going.
  4. Oh and how the weegies laughed, they hadn't heard that one before.............in fact they laughed so much they almost clicked on a Glasgow thread by mistake.
  5. I see Nicolai and co. have managed to cheer up the whole of Scotland - now no more greetin, ok. Thinks I may do a Nicolai myself tomorrow.

    Play offs

I come in peace and am not envious, a moaner or a victim, I am but a lowly mushroom (aka a Comets supporter) who is going to push his little head slowly above the parapet formerly known as Hadrians Wall. I am not asking for a solution to the Irish Border situation or for details of what impact a no deal is going to have on our economy, all I ask is please, please, please someone in the know (or noooo) from either camp tell me when are we taking on the Tigers home and away. Its nothing much to ask you would think, but the longer we are kept waiting, the more the insults and vitriol fill this vacuum, replacing the usual 'friendly banter'. Frankly I am bored with it all, though probably not as bored as the Lakeside and Panthers fans are with the thought of facing each other 7 times I believe in the next couple of weeks - couldn't they sort it all out during 2 meetings, one at each venue, much like they do in boxing when they have their unification bouts. Because by the time the 7th meeting comes around (probably around Christmas time) they will be lucky to have the proverbial one man and his dog there to witness/give a toss about it.
  8. Prove me wrong and make me eat my words Kevin, plea..........se.

    Play offs

Why not, and how many people would it put off attending live speedway. And before anybody starts, I know it was one of the reasons our promoters gave for us running on some Fridays this year. I didn't really get it at the time to be honest, what with the various viewing options we have nowadays. I think it was more to do with trying something to see if it made any difference to crowd levels, what with Fridays being our race night in years gone by.

    Newcastle 2019

Are the crowds 2 or 3 times larger than what teams get here, and what are the main differences between how the sport is run in Poland and Sweden for that matter, and how it 'is run' in this country? There must be lessons that can be learned from our Continental cousins.

There in a nutshell is the problem, not just regarding this issue but many, many more............

I agree. I wonder if a 'second' division could be as you describe but possibly with each team being able to include one 'big hitter' from the league above - rather like the way our local cricket teams have a 'resident professional' in their ranks. That way the supporters still get to see riders from the top league and the other riders can learn from them and aim to take the scalp of the opposition number 1. Just a thought.

Unfortunately THJ I have to agree with you. I hate to think about how much Laura & Co will have lost this season ironically made worse because of our success and without any discernible increase in numbers through the gate. I wonder what the excuses are this season for not attending. They can't blame Keith Denham, a crap team, a lack of entertainment, no local riders, cost? (possibly you could say it is a £10-12 pound sport), so what has stopped people attending? I know we aren't the only team struggling to keep our heads above water and money is tight for a lot of people, but as you say, those people staying away will be the first to complain when it is gone. Unless there is a radical shake up of the sport in this country, where it is governed and run by people without any vested interest other than for the love of the sport I too fear the worst. What speedway needs is a Barry Hearn type character along with some well respected former riders to grab hold of it and rebrand the whole damned thing. This would hopefully bring in some bigger sponsors with some big money but ensuring the money goes into developing the sport as a whole and not just into the elite few. We seem to say these things at this time of year, every year however, so I wont hold my breath. Back onto the positive, and what a team we have this year, c'mon lets grab some silverware!
  14. To the Geordies. As your season is over may I suggest you forget about speedway for a while (much like your number 1 seems to have done already), and get behind your football team instead. Maybe you could get them to start attacking for a start, and you might see them score before Christmas. To the Comet negative posters. If you cant say anything positive now with your team having the year it is having, just don't bother saying anything at all!
  15. I am obviously not privy to what goes on behind the scenes but Ty has been brilliant for us on the track this year. He has probably been one of the busiest riders around and seemed to score consistently well for whoever he has guested for. I am assuming any negative comments from supporters of rival teams are firmly tongue in cheek, as he would have walked into most, if not all teams this year particularly Newcastle. At least he has always turned up unless he was been injured. Hopefully Ty will be back again with us next season, if not I am sure he wont be short of offers.
  16. CAN WE JUST LET THIS GO NOW, IT IS SO BORING - and yes, I am shouting. The fiasco that has been this seasons fixture list is not down to one man, one team, one promoter, one rider - almost everyone involved has been culpable in some shape or form and unless there is a massive shake up over the winter this brilliant sport of ours is going to disappear up its own tailpipe, in this country at least. I couldn't get to last nights meeting so don't know anything about any alleged incidents regarding Ty, but just find it disappointing that there is a negative post seemingly without any proof of any incident having taken place. Everything relating to the Comets should be positive at the moment with loads more to look forward to. We are in the play offs, already in one final and with another semi final to come. So come on lets all be positive, and see where it takes us.

Much like a Newcastle Diamonds speedway rider I cant be a**ed (to check your figures) so I will take your word for it. One of my abiding memories through most of our record breaking summer was 'what a lovely evening for speedway', and there not being any. I know DP wasn't always available due to music festivals and the like, however we have to take some of the blame, as do other promoters for not getting more meetings on during this period. As you say, some promoters manage better than others. This whole fixtures fiasco has turned into a personal vendetta in some peoples eyes, when in fact both the BSPA and all the promoters could have done much more to prevent it happening. It is not the first time we have been behind in getting our fixtures run, as it was very similar last year if memory serves me right - its just made worse this year because we have been successful! As well as cut off dates for league fixtures, there should be ones for the cup competitions too ( by the way, do we need 2 cup competitions?) - the Shield being ok if it is treated as a season opener, however it could still be going at Christmas this year. To sum up, there are lots of people to blame - lets just make sure it doesn't happen again next year!!!!
  18. Yet again the long suffering supporters suffer. Last time the Diamonds were in town most of them at least turned up (though only Tero could be bothered) and I stated that they should give any of their supporters that made the trip over their money back. Tonight having deceived the paying public by stating that only Kus was missing, they should compensate the home supporters and the home promotion. What a farce. And they wonder why speedway is dying on its a**e.

Yep, can see that working. Almost going the full circle.

The new stadium idea has been kicking around for a number of years now, and does make a lot of sense in many ways. Both DP and Borough Park, whilst having history and 'character' are both decrepit and not fit for purpose. Not sure I would like DP as a second home Singy! A single state of the art 6000 capacity stadium with a 3G/4G pitch is the way forward would need community facilities which would ensure that it was used by more than just the football and rugby clubs. A developer however would have to be found to bankroll the project, as Allerdale will not have the funding to do so, with their financial input probably being limited to the sale of the land to the said developer. Developments of this type take years to come to fruition due to the lengthy consultation processes involved, therefore both existing grounds will be around for a while yet with THJ's assessment of 7 years being much nearer the mark. THJ has beaten me to it, as I too don't think there is anything at present to prevent football clubs having a running track around their pitch, however 3G/4G pitches are not permitted, though they have them in Scotland and elsewhere in Europe. As they are developed further things may, and probably will change as clubs, particularly at lower levels strive to make the most out of their grounds to keep themselves viable. Man Utd. played on one last night in Bern, though Jose was moaning about it afterwards - no change there! With regard to the Olympic Stadium, West Ham have installed retractable seating which covers most, but not all of the track area - they have laid artificial grass over the remainder and are presently in a battle to have it claret and not green! As a football supporter too, I am against having tracks around the pitch as it detracts from the atmosphere and match day experience. Therefore I think that speedway needs a stadium of its own and would like to think that Allerdale would look on us kindly and include the development of Northside for speedway rather than a site for 'local travellers' as part of the whole project. As others have already noted it would help our cause no end if we had more people coming through the gate, at least to match those attending the football and rugby in the town. What better time to get down to the speedway than in the next few weeks when a local team has a chance of winning a national title - not something that the football or rugby teams have done for a while

    Play offs

I'm a Comets fan and have no problem with Glasgow's signing of Cookie as it made a lot of sense for them at the time. It was an opportunist move, appears not to have broken any rules and is one a few other promoters probably wish they had thought of first. I think the problem is no-one is sure of the rules any more, including some of the people responsible for making them! Cookie seems to get a bit of stick, but as in other sports opposition fans very rarely boo a poor opponent. Furthermore he has been down to DP a few times this season where he has been seen helping and offering advice to our young guys Dan and Kyle. As far as I am concerned he is always welcome at DP. I know he is likely to visit DP shortly and rack up a lot of points, but surely we all want to see the best riders competing against each other. It's just a shame we won't have our full team out - I would have loved to have seen Cookie and Dan going head to head. Hopefully the rest of our team will be fit and maybe, just maybe we can finish the season with that bit of elusive silverware.
  22. I think it would be very interesting to see guest averages, particularly if it also compared them with their average when visiting with their 'own team'.
  23. I know we struggled to obtain guests today but I would love to hear from one of our statisticians out there who could let us know just how sh*** Doolan always is when guesting for us. Did we do something bad to him in a previous life? Worrall is another that springs to mind, but Doolan is in a league of his own. Full marks to Aaron Summers who has been excellent for us recently.
  24. A big well done to the track staff for ensuring the meeting went ahead after all the rain during the past couple of days, and to all the riders from both sides for giving it a go. Hopefully no-one picked up any serious injuries. Into the play offs we go then, and still in 2 cup competitions - not too shabby for a TEAM that many had written off before the season had started and who have had to overcome a number of obstacles put before them this year. It would be nice to get Ty back from injury which would give us a fighting chance against anyone. Bring em on!
  25. Apparently in a new twist, it appears that as Simon has (previously unbeknown to his bride to be) invited his team mates to the wedding to provide a guard of honour in their Kevlars she has insisted they all tucked up safely in their beds this evening by 8pm. Luckily for Peterborough they have discovered a little known clause in the rulebook which covers this eventuality which allows them to bring in a whole team of GP riders. Therefore it will be the Comets v Woffinden, Zmarzlik, Janowski, Lindgren, Barker (guest for Dudek), Hancock and Laguta. It is obviously going to be make it a little tougher for the boys tonight but we have had bigger hurdles to cross this year, so I say we will just sneak it 47-43. C'mon you Comets.
