    apology to workington speedway .

I honestly can't believe what I am reading here. I know why Jenga has apologised, but don't see why he should have been put in that position for expressing his opinion in the first place. I think that it is a certain Mr Whitehead that needs to apologise, not you Jenga. As others have said we live in a society (thank goodness) where we supposedly have the right of free speech. If our promoters are so sensitive to criticism from one of their most loyal supporters that they are prepared to ban him from attending then they are in the wrong profession, and we as a speedway club are on a far slippier slope than we all thought. One of the reasons Jenga is so prolific on here is because there is a huge vacuum where the official Comets website should be keeping us all up to date with what is happening and (this year) not happening with all things Comets. I don't always agree with Jenga's posts and yes sometimes they are a little confrontational, but for goodness sake we are mostly (if not all) adults on here and it is a forum for public debate. One thing that is obvious is that Jenga cares passionately about the club and if the promoters are willing to ban the likes of him, then we really are truly f***ed.

    Workington 2018 .

I've always said this. It's the same teams who get sc***ed regarding fixtures every year whilst other teams sail merrily on, with rules seemingly being made up to suit the chosen few as they go. Time for a real shake up - however I won't hold my breath as real supporters ask for this every year.

    Workington v Glasgow 23/06/18 7:00pm

Some good hard racing from both teams tonight. I certainly didn't notice a lack of effort from any Tigers it was just that the Comets were better on the night and in fact are not a bad team on the quiet. It was a shame neither team had their full complement, but it was good to see some actual speedway. Throw in a bit of controversy and a couple of pretend fights complete with handbags and dummies and surely there must have been something there for everyone tonight. Finally, on a night where all the Comets contributed it was good to see Rene back on form with heat 13 being a particular highlight.

4 I'm afraid. I said after a home meeting we once had (must have been sometime in 2017) that the whole DP experience just felt as if it was going through the motions. Well we seem to be completely constipated now. I, like the others on here will be at DP on Saturday and for the rest of the meetings when they are on but what is happening to encourage others to attend. MORE TO FOLLOW

It's just as well this forum exists, otherwise Comets fans like myself who don't do Facebook or Twitter would not have a clue what is going on. What exactly is the point of our website when it is always so far behind. As for Dan of course we should keep him and be proud he is doing so well, both for himself and for Cumbria. As to the fixtures, frustration does not even begin to describe the situation we find ourselves in.
  8. I may have got this wrong but are you suggesting that the home team should be expected to pay the away teams points money and/or travel expenses. In what other sphere of work is your employer not responsible for paying you? Do Man. Utd. pay the Newcastle players each time they visit Old Trafford? (cue sarky comments). Surely the problem is down to the bunch of t***ers who drew up this excuse for a fixture list. How difficult can it be to ensure that some teams do not complete 5 home league meetings before some teams complete any! As they are almost wholly responsible for this situation they should ensure that there is some form of slush fund available to provide interest free short term loans to help tide struggling clubs over, at least until they have their next home meeting. If I have completely got hold of the wrong end of the stick I apologise, my only excuse being that I have been constantly been watching football for 3 days solid and my brain has probably turned to mush. Though how good was it to see Mexico turn over the Germans
  9. Superb stuff from Nicolai, Rasser and Mason, that could have been an absolute hiding with the team we had to field last night. As others have said, something(s) needs to be done to help save our sport. Injuries happen unfortunately so there is always going to have to be a necessity for guests and/or R/R. The problem is a shortage of riders, and the fact we have a league of only 11 teams. With 4 meetings last night it was always going to be difficult to get a suitable guest. Why we ended up with the guest we did however is anybody's guess. Surely there are better quality riders at National League level we can use (if the rules allow), the site of the likes of Lamb and Woolley (who we had to endure for weeks on end last year) trundling around is embarrassing for the sport. Or is that one of the problems we have, a huge disparity in standard between the Championship and the National Leagues whereas with one or two exceptions there is very little to choose between the top 2 leagues. I say amalgamate the top 2 leagues which will enable the fixtures to be spread over more days, therefore more riders will be available as cover.

Yes that is something to be proud of 2 West Cumbrians in the top 3 of a national sporting event, that cant have happened too often, if at all. Perhaps gurning ?

    Berwickbandits2018

Fair enough and you have a decent team, but make the most of it because as usual the fixture list makes about as much sense as the format for the nations cup final. So while the Bandits have ridden at home 5 times in the Championship, the Comets haven't ridden at home at all yet, and the Monarchs only once! NB Apparently we may have a home fixture on the 23rd - not sure which month.

    Workington 2018 .

On a slightly different topic, does anyone else know of a sport or a sporting event where the actual final is split over 2 days. One team wins more points than any other. For some reason there is then a 'grand final' where the points are shared, and they then change the scoring system and give the gold medal to the runner up! Yep only speedway I guess.
  13. Well done lads a fantastic team effort, with 6 of them getting race wins. A special well done to Nicolai - great to have you back.

    Workington 2018 .

Just to confirm, we are not at Lakeside tonight, but we are at Edinburgh tomorrow, and are next at home on 23rd June. More to follow.
  15. I thought our number 5 was Klindt not Klimt, though it does now start to make a bit more sense. Maybe we should stop treading on eggshells and glossing over the fact that we have lost matt and get back to winning speedway matches. I'll get my coat.
  16. As the draw specialists its got 45 all written all over it, with our Great Danes coming to the party!
  17. Whilst we are obviously grateful to Laura and her team for providing us with a team to watch, they really need to sharpen up on the promotion side of things. The official website is still always days behind. Just looking at it now they are 'looking forward to Lakeside tonight'. Did we ever get a full report from our victories at Peterborough and Glasgow, or are we still waiting for 'more to follow'. I don't live in West Cumbria so don't know how last nights meeting was publicised, if at all. For me it was a big meeting due to the fact that it gave us a great opportunity to progress in the cup, we haven't ridden at home for ages, and Glasgow would be seeking revenge for that big defeat and bringing with them a good number of supporters. Yet if I didn't read this message board I would hardly know there was a meeting on at all save for a standard picture on the Comets website saying 'next home meeting'. At the risk of having my head chopped off for sticking it just above the parapet, I just get the impression from our (albeit very few meetings this year) that we are all simply going through the motions so far this season, and that is not what I want to feel like when visiting DP. I want to see/hear a bit of a buzz, a bit of excitement, a bit of enthusiasm. It is a 2 way thing I know, but it has to start at the top, working its way through the riders and us, the supporters. I hate rumours, (as most of them turn out to be complete bo****ks) but the best way to stop them is to be open and to have a constant dialogue with those who have a vested interest. This is plainly not happening at present and has manifested itself quite often in the past few days resulting in things like who was our team manager at Lakeside, why are certain riders not appearing to be giving 100%, not keeping us informed last night with what was going on with the track......I could go on. I love my speedway and will be down at DP whenever I can this season, but others may need a bit more encouragement. Are they getting that?
  18. I have no problems with Kyle. This year will stand him, and hopefully us in good stead for next year. As others have said the problems, if indeed there are problems lie elsewhere. I still believe we have a decent and well balanced team, however a couple need to find a little more consistency which is not being helped by a lack of track time at DP. Tonight the track was very tricky, not helped by the over zealous watering but there was some decent racing from those who dared. Richie and Bomber were particularly impressive and were always going to provide tough opposition in 13 and 15, therefore the Comets did well to salvage a draw in the end - though unless we can come up with another away performance like we had at Peterborough and Glasgow it looks like the draw will be enough for Glasgow.
  19. Not even close to 38, though good to see Mason and Ty in the points again though another disappointing evening for our 'Great Danes'. Whatever was said before Peterborough and Glasgow needs to be said again it appears. Does anyone know what is likely to happen to our line up when our averages are reassessed (assuming everyone is retained).
  20. After all the sunny Saturdays with no speedway, guess what the weather is looking like tomorrow?

    Workington 2018 .

Those moaning about the odd Friday should think themselves lucky they don't follow a Premiership Club or Sheffield or Redcar. Designated race nights for the Premiership and Championship clubs I believe is a good thing and has/will help rider availability. What hasn't helped has been the stop/start nature of the season. I am not sure why the season started so early and was followed by so few fixtures. I know the Comets aren't the only team affected, but having only 2 home fixtures before the start of June is ridiculous. Maybe absence will make the heart grow fonder, and this coupled with the very impressive showings at Peterborough and Glasgow will result in bumper crowds from June onwards. Well we can dream. You are not going to satisfy everyone, whatever night you race on, however I don't really see the problem with the Friday/Saturday night option. Historically we were always a Friday track, and for most (not all) people nowadays their weekends start at 3 or 4 pm on a Friday. I obviously don't know everyone's circumstances, but swap shifts, forgo that overtime, there may be a way to ensure you get down to DP.

    Workington 2018 .

Yes, surely the promotion should have had the reports up as soon as possible. Jenga is right, these sort of things do matter, and when we have had a weekend like we have had they should be shouting from the rooftops to let everyone know we are a team to be reckoned with and actively encouraging as many people as possible to get themselves down to DP.

    Glasgow v Workington 13th May 4pm

Two fantastic away performances from the team, and am loving the love for the Comets from far and wide. We just need a bit more from West Cumbria now - the team are doing their bit, lets do ours. The fragmented fixture list is doing us no favours (when does it ever) as I am sure the way things are going they want to be racing every day in order to keep the momentum going, however we should be letting everyone know about the recent results and encouraging everyone to get down to DP for the next meeting (possibly sometime in August I believe). The 2nd of June actually against some wounded Tigers - should be a good one, get yourselves there.
