    2006 World Champion: Jason Crump

Thanks Ron, and all the best. As you imply, there may be others lurking on this forum who are more anti Crump jnr than myself, me thinks......

    2006 World Champion: Jason Crump

Didn't say that at all and you know it. I said that it wasn't his fault that the rest of the field appears very weak this year, i.e. it's not his fault, what can he do about it apart from going and beating what has been put up against him and well done him for, really, making it look easy. Totally agree with your 3rd & 4th para too. And Ron "Yes, not my favourite speedway personality, but well done Jason" wasn't meant as a spiteful phrase, just a fact. Jason simply isn't my favourite speedway personality, but I can recognise what a great achievement it is winning a World Title in relative ease. Good luck to the boy, I just think he's missing a trick by not presenting himself better in front of the cameras. I too am a supporter of speedway and can see the good and bad in lots of different riders, but unreservedly respect them all for what they do. I have known Jason since he was a little kid sitting in the back of his Dad's (very messy - not a spiteful comment, a fact) car at the Australasian Final at Liverpool in 1981. You don't go that far back with people without taking an interest in them and them earning your respect for bettering their father's achievements.

    Tony Millard!

Affirmative Ron. I nearly asked to be wrapped up and sent back to the padded cell before I did myself some very nasty damage

    2006 World Champion: Jason Crump

Yes, not my favourite speedway personality, but well done Jason. Thoroughly deserved and merited. It is not his fault that the rest of the field appears very weak this year. If he keeps up his intensity and stays clear of injuries, then he could go on and win it for a few more years yet.

    Tony Millard!

I have always refrained from criticising Mr Millard's commentary, as I wouldn't want Sky to take it as an affront and turn their back on speedway, but I really, really, really can't take Millard anymore. Commentators are supposed to be paid to commentate on what they see, not what they think they see, or would like to see happening. Tony Millard, I'm afraid appears to do both and never says what he is actually seeing. His inability to work out which exclusion light is on and why, was the final, final straw. He ruins a sport I enjoy and pay to watch, makes it unenjoyable and it shouldn't be allowed to happen any further. I for one am going to e-mail Sky and complain. The guys at Eurosport do, I think, work out of a studio in London and can be forgiven for not seeing off the screen incidents, substitutions, etc. Millard is probably paid a tidy sum to be taken to stadia, put up in hotels and run up expenses. I believe he covers Brighton FC for BBC. Please, please, please Mr Millard stay there and do not attend another speedway meeting unless as a paying customer. And if you do, please do not stand or sit near me. An alternative? What about Graham Stuart the ex Charlton footballer who seemed to know his stuff, or Stevie Wonder as even he would have a better chance of getting things right.

Thank you very much for that. Absolutely brilliant. EDIT to earlier post - of course it was Colin, not Doug Sanders (he was the golfer who lost an Open in a play-off I think.)

    Train To 1976 World Final

Yes, I remember the 'hotel' and how scared we felt standing outside the building. I also think I remember somebody indicating that it was horse meat that we'd been served up........

    Train To 1976 World Final

Apologies if this subject has already been the subject of a thread (if it has please tell me off nicely), but was anybody on the Warners Travel train to the 1976 World Final in Poland and if so, do they have any stories to tell. I think I remember joining it in London and, because of demand, they took away the buffet car and added another carriage. I remember sharing a carriage with 5 other people and 'sleeping' on what seemed like luggage racks. Being woken up at the Polish border with a torch and gun in my face being asked for my passport. We went through the old East Germany and East & West Berlin. Some Newport fans, I think, may have even been shot at when they put their heads out of a window when we were in a station somewhere. We couldn't find anywhere to spend our zlote, so threw it out of the window on the way back, only for the locals to throw it back as the currency at the time was jeans. Every row in the stadium was flanked by armed soldiers. Peter Collins won, Malcolm Simmons 2nd with Phil Crump 3rd, local favourite Plech & Mauger 4th, John Louis 6th. Think we may have been given provisions which didn't last very long and absolutely loved it when we got off in W Berlin and had a beer and a meal in a pub there.

Cheers guys. Of course it was Rochester and Barrow. Thanks for that. Romford to Barrow via Custom House? Good they kept it local, eh?

Brooklands was the first place I saw team speedway. Was taken by the dad of my school mate John Butcher and just fell in love with it all. I used to go and see the football team (think they won the old Southern League in 1968?) but speedway then took over. Stood on the 1st & 2nd bends. Charlie Benham was the immediate favourite. Didn't Bruce Edgar ride in white boots at some time? And of course the classy Kevin Holden, such a shame when he had that accident at Poole. Certainly remember John Louis (and Dave Jessup?) winning heats by half a lap there. Also remember going to see the Bombers ride in a 4 team tournament at Eastbourne and them having a unicycle competition for the riders during the interval and, I think, Doug Sanders fell off and broke his collar bone. I started a campaign in the Romford Recorder to bring the speedway back to the borough and was told to 'Get on my Bike' by a local councillor of the time. In a way, I like to believe that that campaign led to Arena Essex starting up. Unfortunately, I really can't see speedway returning in that area again. Too many houses, too many people ready to complain. Now please put me right on this, but I think Romford took over the licence from Rochford who couldn't get permission for their track but had already ridden 2 away meetings. Managed to instal a track at Brooklands in under 2 weeks (think I read that was a world record somewhere once). Were evicted despite massive crowds, especially when the Czechs were there. Moved to Custom House for a season, then the licence went to Workington? If that book ever gets written, I definitely want a copy.
  12. Yes, and you also said: 'No F1 team that I can think of has ever had two drivers of the same Nationality' and we've already proved that that was wrong......
  13. No Gollob then......? The series wouldn't be the same without the old boy - and I can still see him getting a top 8 this year. "This has to be a crazy rule, what is the point in him riding in the meetings if they count for nothing." Money? Sponsorship? Being nominated? Proving a point? I guess....
  14. I appreciate that this is a Speedway forum and I have no desire to continue this thread, but my point was that Speedway, as far as I know, is the only sport that currently 'nominates' its world finalists. F1, as far as I know does not 'nominate' its world finalists - if they did, it could be quite interesting though. Agreed there is no formal qualification, apart from the ability to obtain the budget, comply to the regulations, etc. but also they are not 'nominated'. I'm not sure what the 2 x drivers from the same nationality has to do with any of this, but I'm sure I remember Blundell & Brundle both driving for Brabham in 1991 (and Ligier in 1993) and Hill & Coulthard for Williams in 1995 (and I'm guessing there would be loads more if I bothered to look back over history).
  15. And if there were no nominations and only a wild card, the top 7 from this meeting would meet the top 8 from, this year's GP leading to these riders being in next year's GP: 1) (5) Wieslaw Jagus, Polen, 12p ( 3 3 1 3 2 ) + 3 2) (9) Rune Holta, Norge, 12p ( 3 2 3 1 3 ) + 2 3) (15) Hans Andersen, Danmark, 15p ( 3 3 3 3 3 ) + 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) (4) Peter Karlsson, Sverige, 14p ( 3 3 3 2 3 ) + 0 5) (1) Chris Harris, Stobritannien, 11p ( 2 1 3 3 2 ) 6) (12) Kaj Laukkanen, Finland, 9p ( 1 1 2 2 3 ) 7) (2) Charlie Gjedde, Danmark, 8p ( 1 2 0 3 2) Which really wouldn't be too bad and might force other riders to do the qualifiers. Are there any other sports that nominate its world finalists?
  16. Well done AJ. You looked the best rider on the night and you deservedly won the Scandinavian GP in awful conditions. Especially for beating Hans Andersen and Jason Crump in the Final. both of whom didn't deserve to get that far, in my opinion, respectfully. Congrats to all the riders for getting through the meeting. Great speedway in conditions that we haven't seen for a few years. Brilliant.

Romford Bombers 1970 featuring the late lamented Kevin Holden. David Bargh from more modern times.

    Tommy Jansson

I used to go to Plough Lane regularly in the 70's so saw a bit of Tommy Jansson on track, but my lasting memory of him was pushing through the crowds carrying an engine after the 1975 World Final. 'Excuse me'. 'Thank you'. 'Sorry'. Such a polite young man with a magic twinkle in his eye. You couldn't call me a fan as I was following a young Australian from Rooty Hill at the time, but I will never forget how I felt when I heard the news of his passing. So very sad and waste of such a young talent. He could have starred for years. God bless Tommy and Rest In Peace. I'm sure you're racing round the tracks up there and having fun with our other dear departed friends.
  19. Ha, ha. Brilliant Iris. You would have thought that Herr BertHoven would have known that. Maybe he should thread a little more carefully next time?
  20. Don't know if this is better news or not about the AJ/Hampel crash. http://www.speedwayworld.tv/en/news/a6661?...14ab528cad58ff8 LUCKY ENDING TO A DRAMATIC ACCIDENT ATLAS Wroclaw defeated Polonia Bydgoszcz 54:35 in a match that will be remembered for the frightening crash of Jaroslaw Hampel and Andreas Jonsson. The Grand Prix riders hooked their motorbikes directly together after the start of Heat 9. Both fell did not move for some time. "We were both very lucky," said Hampel after the match. He has only sustained some bruises. Andreas was taken to Wroclaw hospital. "Luckily nothing is broken. Jonsson suffered shock and was complaining of neck and elbow pain. "I was saved by the air-fence. That is the best thing that has happened to speedway in recent years," admitted Hampel, who returned to the track two heats later. "I felt pain, but did not want to finish the match so early. I wanted to ride and get the feeling that nothing was wrong," said Jarek, who won that heat.
  21. Xenophobia of Patriotism? I would consider that, as a former representative of his country, Mr Tatum has every right to be patriotic. His wearing of the union flag on his race jacket, has probably made him more so. If anything, British people are not patriotic enough. With club loyalties, speedway enhances this situation. As for 'clearly bumped a number of times'. Yes, but barging back and, neither lead to Hans' fall on the corner. It was like of bike control on a tricky track. And bike control usually comes from brain control. 'Shocking language' yes but c'mon, this is a 'man's sport' and, unlike Hans in the SWC, there was no kicking and ranting going on. Maybe speedway should introduce a yellow card for diving.

    Mark Loram

Gollob passed it? Not quite yet me thinks. Older, wiser, still not happy on temporary & wet tracks, maybe. Passed it? I hope not. With the 3 x remaining tracks to come, I can still see him top eight and I hope we get the enjoyment of seeing him ride at the top level for a few more years yet. One of the sport's true entertainers and a top bloke. Agree about Holta. He is unlucky not to be in this season.
  23. Does anyone know where our Sophie was last night? Did she not travel due to the problems with flights? Did she think the producer said Manila? Has her right chesticle been caught in a mole trap? Did she get caught in a downpour, win the stadium wet t-shirt competition and get taken to the nearest club to be given her prize? Has she been dropped following all the 'harsh' comments about her on threads on here? Can she no longer cope with Tony Millard's c**k ups? If you are unwell Soph, get better darling and hope to see you on Monday night (weather permitting).
