  3. A couple of years late, I know, but if you look at THIS TABLE (½-way down the page,) you'll find them all, from its first introduction in the SAL of 1955 to the last in 1969; - Eric Croft to Mr.Mauger - , together with pics of the different versions of the Sash over the period.
  4. Since Trevor Redmond has been dead for 14 years I dont think it was him. (He did promote at Shelbourne Park in 1961.
  5. . Here's the Youtube video of Janiro winning the Final, followed by interviews, etc, with the finalists and with former champ Bobby Schwartz, still riding at 55!
  6. Hi Heidi,- I doped & oiled for your dad when he arrived at Cradley in 1966, following over Chum Taylor, who he lodged and travelled with. In his first 2nd-half ride at Dudley Wood Joe rocketed down the back straight to the alarm of everyone, 'cos we knew he wouldn't be able to take the bend at that speed. He'd come from Claremont's 640yd track where it was fast and hardly necessary to slide on the big wide bends, - he couldn't ! I also remember travelling by train to Glasgow with him and the team. On the journey the team manager dished out the fivers, one each, for a meal. At the end of the meal, when Joe told the waiter to keep the change, he tossed it back in his face, cursing “When we get to Glasgow I’m taxed a shilling on every meal !” Admittedly a penny-halfpenny change - 1½d -, still wasn’t much even in 1966 !, By total co-incidence I also got to know Hec Haslinger when the Doncaster team transfered to Brum in '71 and I d&o'd for skipper George Major who Hec rode alongside. I last bumped into your dad in a hardware shop in Kingswinford, late '70s/early '80s after he'd finished riding. I'll send you a PM.
  7. Prior to Brum re-opening, in 2006 Ian posted into their Forum that " I live in Rotherham and work at a local college as head of engineering and allied trades and art. best wishes.Ian." Ian was in the 1971 Brummies team that transfered down from Doncaster, then later rode for Scunthorpe and Berwick.
  8. . Over the weekend both the AMA (FIM-affiliated) and Costa Mesa's own SRA national titles were raced for in California, USA, but there was no conflict as to who is the USA Champion. Ex-Coventry Bee Billy Janiro took both titles with straight wins in all his heats, Semis and Finals at both Auburn's 'Fast Friday' race track and Costa Mesa the following evening. Janiro took a first-bend fall along with Dukie Ermolenko in the Friday Final but in the re-start there were no mistakes and just like in his heats he out-gated and was away. Charlie Venegas was also on both rostrums, being 3rd at Auburn and improving on that in Orange County, with another ex-Bee Brian Yarrow runner-up in the AMA competition and Buck Blair third in the SRA meeting. 'AMA/USA Speedway' National Chmpshp, Auburn Ca, 30.9.2011 1 Billy Janiro 2 Brian Yarrow 3 Charlie Venegas. SRA National Championship, Costa Mesa Ca, 1.10.2011 1 Billy Janiro 2 Charlie Venegas 3 - Buck Blair. Janiro has now taken 3 AMA and 4 SRA titles: all past and present US champions, - AMA, SRA, 'US Open', 'American Final' and 'Long Track Speedway' - , can be seen HERE. .
  9. A man at each gate position was the norm for decades. I'm sure it will only have been economics thats done away with them, (like track rackers, - min 4 on each bend, pulling back dirt after every heat, so the track was uniform throughout the meeting !) These were all paid track-staff, not volunteers. At one time, (mid '60s) Briggo cut off the section above his mudguard, ie had just 2 seperate uprights, because of the alledged practice of local gate men helping the home riders by slightly lifting the rear of the visitors' bikes so that grip was lost.
  10. In the early years speedway teams' didn't have formal nicknames. Nicknames came in informally thru the likes of press reporters and only much later did clubs pick them up and make their official name a town+'team' name.
  11. Definately confirm that Andy Hunt was/is the son of Alan Hunt. He was given rides at Cradley but didn't really make it to team level.
  12. Jonas Kylmakorpi captured his 2nd World Championship last weekend after the last round of the Long Track GP series held at Morizes, France. JK's successes have broken the run of German Lg Trk World Champs of the previous decade, see http://speedwaychampions.com/WorldChampions.aspx , Gerd Riss having now retired following his bad crash in last year's WM GP series, but they still get 3 of the first 6 places. Result of Rd.7,(Rd.5 was cancelled,) was: - Stephane Tresarrieu - Theo Pijper - Stefan Katt - Mathieu Tresarrieu - J.Kylmakorpi - Dirk Fabrik. Overall result was: Jonas Kylmakorpi FN 127pts Richard Speiser GY 103 Stefan Katt GY 101 Theo pijper NL 96 Matt Tresarrieu FR 90 Martin Smolinski GY 83 Steph Tresarrieu FR 75. these 7 qualify for next year's GP series. English scorers were: Glen Phillips 53 (12th) Richard Hall 50 (14th) Andrew Appleton 48 (15th).
  13. We've had Westwood and Wallace already !
  14. This was a round of the Dutch Open Championship. Will there be a rerun or will Lelystad on 02.10.2011 be the last? How many rounds run will that make? - rain has forced cancellation of at least 2 now. I dont know how many run and how many will be completed for the championship.
  15. . He rode 13 matches for Exeter in 1965 plus 16 in 1966. .
  16. Winner of the first of this years 3 national USA speedway titles, the 'US Open' Championship, held at 'Champion Speedway', Owego NYS last weekend was Shawn 'Mad Dog' McConnell. He took his 4th US Open title by virtue of his lead on day 1 after day 2's event was rained off after just a few speedway heats. (Shawn McConnell 20, Dukie Ermolenko 19, Mikey Buman 18: had scores been accumulated McConnell would still have won the title.) McConnell sits out the American Touring Team's UK tour next month: the squad is Buman, Castro, Green, Novratil, Raines, Scopellite, Starks and leaves the day after the Costa Mesa National. On the West coast Costa Mesa run their own SRA 'US National Speedway Championship' on Oct.1st but the official FIM/AMA/USA-Speedway championship final is on the preceding day, Sept.30th at Auburn Ca. Billy Janiro is the current holder of both these titles, - see all past winners at http://speedwaychampions.com/USA.aspx The 2011 US LongTrack Speedway Championship held at Canton, Ohio has been won by Dan Weicht.
  17. . Can someone verify if this is the National Junior(ie U21) Chmpshp or the Silver Helmet competition. - ? I believe these are 2 different competitions.

This was the 'black' year of a pirate Prov'l Lge. George Major, a St.Austell Gull the previuos year had, like a few others, initially stayed 'legit' and was riding for Norwich. But paired with an international star not known for consideration of any team-mate he finally crossed over and signed for Cradley in May of that year. He did become Heathens' top point scorer in 1964 with 178pt.

  21. Not quite, try "Names from past World Championship Qualifying Rds."
  22. Its definately JOE Westwood, - got in the Cradley team a few times in '62 (2pts,1mtg,) and '63 (7pts 7 mtgs).
  23. dlprezes, You have to be aware that in these years, - early '60s - , EVERY British rider with a speedway bike got a chance in the World Championship. This could include reserves/novices at a track who would fill in for absentees or injuries on the night. We also had a Qual.Rd. at Rye House when it was just a training track for non-league riders. So there will be names that no one except the local fans had heard of or seen, and may never have made it to league-rider status.

So why are you called "2ndBender" ? A Heathens' win, - but of course. Much better than present day performances.

    Wallace

Sorry, but my prog is unmarked, being a later re-acquisition. I understand why there's a query, - Wallace isn't listed in the season's summary of Newport PL scorers (nor any other team.) In the half-hearted Metropolitan Lge scorers he has no entry with 'NewPool' but a zero with Weymouth. Sthn Lge scorers aren't given in the history of 1964. Burning question then is, "Did he indeed partake in that first SL meeting? - or was he scratched from the printed prog?" I wasn't present, I was on shift, but I sent the wife-to-be along to her first ever 'away' match, complete with green-&-white rosette and rattle. Can she remember if he rode? She can't even remember going ! . Some things make impressions and stay in our minds forever, - For others, ....... . (p.s. Yes, she's still here, bless her. No, she hasn't been to speedway for many years.) pps. Stuart Wallace is photographed in that first programme, along with Vandenberg & Golden. What a juxtapose.
