  1. For me it was the same, but different . Ronnie Moore and Tommy Jansson had a sort of aura about them. Both were sort of different to the others with a wonderful relaxed friendly character. With Ronnie you just felt as if you were standing before a real champ and obviously the crowds of people around him and Tommy gave you that feeling as well. And nobody would ever be so spectacular as Peter Collins
  2. It is strange that players from the period when England were arguably the best team in the world never seem to get a mention. But that is what I was trying to show. It is also quite interesting to see how a worlds top 20 can change significantly according to which country does the poll, at least with football
  3. Not even sure what that is supposed to mean. There was always differences, pretty much from the start. I mean when speedway started off in the UK, it wasn't the same as how the Aussies had been racing in their homeland. The tracks were generally smaller and I think the surface was different. When the Aussie riders went to California for instance in the 1930s the tracks were also different to Australia or the UK. They noted it took some getting used to the clay surface....
  4. Over the next few weeks Charlie battled it out for the titles with Pearce and Yenson and they thrilled the ever increasing crowds until the night which I went into some detail about when a record 35,000 turned up only to see a few riders go on strike, including Pearce and Spinks Spinks of course was banned in Brisbane and set off for Sydney where he was instantly a success, beating Tommy Benstead in a handicap final, but losing out to 18 year old sensation Billy Lamont in another competition. Seems most riders in Sydney were on bigger bikes than Spinks Harley. The meeting also saw the debut at the Showground of US star 'Sprouts' Elder. Charlie met and beat Elder in the next meeting, in which he was having a successful night winning a few heats in the Golden Gauntlet until disaster struck and he had a spectacular fall, his bike somersaulting, was knocked out and badly shaken. It didn't stop him though and he could get in a couple of meetings a week with the Royal and Showground running
  5. Report from 1935 states Cordy Milne turned down an offer to ride in Britain as he was earning 200 pound a week in California. He obviously changed his mind the next year Others to visit on their way from NZ to England that season were Pete Colman, described as the baby of the group, who started racing in 1933, and was 3rd in the 1935 national championship behind the Milne brothers (?) and just pipped to the North California title on the last night by Jack 'Bo' Lisman ,22 years old and the largest speedway rider in the US at over 6 ft had been riding for 5 years Sam Arena, 23 years old and also a hill climbing and road racing expert and Neks Hubbard, 27 and new to track racing, coming from the hill climbing scene Byrd McKinney, Putt Mossmann, Pee Wee Cullum, Ray Grant, Manuel Trujillo, E. Schnitzer and of course Putt's sister and Ray Grants wife Dessie Grant
  6. See today that because of the block on border crossing all the Wittstock squad couldn’t take part in the training session
  7. Is this most spectacular or best ?
  8. But on this fan poll he just gets into the top 10. Duncan Edwards not in there. But on another top 10 he is number 1, which shows how they can vary https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportbible.com/football/news-the-top-25-england-players-of-all-time-according-to-fans-20200328.amp.html
  9. I guess it is like asking who the best England football players were. Stanley Matthews or Duncan Edwards might well be right up there, but most people wouldn’t have seen them and generally choose the more modern players.... just a handful would have seen Hart and most might never have heard his name mentioned at all, let alone in regards to being spectacular
  10. Indeed, all about opinions. Very few if any fan has ever seen Lamont, whereas many have seen Buzz. So I guess if asked Buzz would come higher up the list on ‘ most spectacular Dons rider’ How can we really judge how spectacular Lamont was without some decent footage of him in action? Totally different from judging someone on his scores. A pity that there isn’t more film of those early days
  11. I just threw a dice. If a 1 came up the rider got 1 etc until all riders in the race had 3-2-1-0 and so on
  12. Must say I never heard anyone near me talk about Billy Lamont when I attended meetings at Plough Lane
  13. I sort of had an advantage, as there were two of me. One rode for Wimbledon and England and the other rode for Berwick and Scotland
  14. Yes. But also interesting that there was another with the same nickname at the same time Cyclone Mookey
  15. Yes, I was World champ a couple of times in my own speedway game/world
  16. Germany are talking of banning loud motorbikes on sundays and Bank Holidays....
  17. Looking at the Aussie press of the time, I can find announcements or results of the Tests at Wimbledon(saying 1st test), then Belle Vue etc a piece about Duggan losing the London Riders title and winning the British Riders Championship in front of 90,000. But no mention of this
  18. Have you asked on FB if anyone knows John ?
  19. And Bill Clinton at the back in blue ?
  20. Couple of second half riders who did make it were Gordon Kennett and Ted Hubbard. Though not for Wimbledon. Well in Gordon’s case it took some years before he did
  21. Paul Dowdall, Rocky Coutts, Rob Jones went on a little and Mal Bedkopper I think another who done a couple of seasons
  22. Not sure what you want to find out about terry ? His career stats were posted here, I think. The trouble is you ask for info, say for instance the Greta Thunberg thread or asking 7 or 8 weeks down the line what 'self-isolation' with Covid is, then don't respond or say, I have better things to do, when someone answers......is it any wonder people think you are strange and probably a 'troll' ? What do you want to know about Terry other than his stats, maybe we can help you here?
  23. Not sure what you are on about John. The fact is, this is a thread that interests me as a Dons fan. Think you made a bit of a Wally of yourself with your Terry Mussett comments. You also started the day, by posting a confused smiley on my comment to Norbold, as if you just want to attract attention, which you seem to confirm in this post As it was, I thought we were getting all matey. I even thanked you for your help in the Jimmy Gibb thread and you have also come onto the Charlie Spinks thread with a few photos.....
  24. Guess you are lucky your parents favourite rider wasn’t ‘Crusty’ Pye or Digger Pugh or even Pee Wee Cullum
