  1. The Chieftain Stand was still there when I first visited Belle Vue in September 1993. I think it was demolished a year or two later.
  2. Nordin's death was announced on December 1.
  3. .Göte Nordin, aged 88, passed away on November 21
  4. Agree with you, but at least older than the officially acknowledged version of speedway.
  5. Arthur Payne, born 28/08/23, becomes 100 years today. The only remaining rider who is older than the sport itself! First acknowledged speedway meeting was held on December 15, 1923.

    RON JOHNSON

Speedway Star had a very interesting four-page story about Ron Johnson in their December 31 issue.

    RON JOHNSON

According to this site, Johnson amassed a fortune during his speedway career and the film “Once a Jolly Swagman,” starring Dirk Bogarde, was based on his life. https://wais.org.au/hallofchampions/ron-johnson/ Never heard about that before, true or not?

    RON JOHNSON

According to this article by Peter White, Ron Johnson's last race was at Sheffield in the second half towards the end of 1963. https://www.speedwaypast.com/stories/larger-than-life-ron-johnson
  9. Where's Gunnar Malmqvist? Scored 7 points to finish tenth in the 1968 world final. Gunnar is alive and well, lives at Vetlanda and celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary in February. Born 25/12/1940 and should be number 18 on the list. https://www.merinfo.se/person/Vetlanda/Bo-Erik-Gunnar-Malmqvist-1940/bju2x-nhch
  10. There was no other Söderman. You might have thought about Rune Sörmander?
  11. Peo is definitely dead. Well before Wikipedia even existed. Was a referee for many years, but died suddenly in July, 1992, some 3 months before his 60th birthday.
  12. Peo Söderman is gone as well. He died already in July 1992, aged just 59.
  13. Two fo the Swedish riders on the list passed away several years ago. Per Tage Svensson died on May 26, 2008 and Leif Enecrona as early as April 11, 2003.
  14. Heerenveen staged the World team final in 1987. It was the same indoor venue as today. I believe it was the first ever ice racing event to be held indoors.

  16. 18 Nygren, Lindqvist, G.Andersson, Zanderholm 19 Lindarw, Jansson, Carlsson, Bernt Nilsson 20 Pramberg, Olsson, Bengt Nilsson, Fundin If you want, I can e-mail you the complete score chart.
  17. 1952 - Pramberg 11, Lindqvist 7. 1956 - Arne Carlsson scored 1 point, replacing Thorsten Karlsson in heat 12. He did in fact beat Olle Nygren in that race, resulting in Nygren missing out of a run-off for silver. Olle Andersson I had an engine failure while replacing Rune Claesson in heat 14 and finished last in heat 18, again replacing Rune Claesson. 1959 - From what I can find, Joel Jansson had just two outings, scoring 1 and 0. Not sure about who he replaced. 1960 - Leif Larsson fell while replacing Bernt Nilsson. 2003 - Not sure, but the meeing was held according to a knockout formula with 21 riders taking part.
  18. The Swedish pairs final on March 2 at Mariestad is off! Really unprofessional handling throughout. If they had decided to switch the meeting from Otterbacken to Mariestad a couple of days earlier, it would probably have worked, but to create an ice from scratch in 8 days was simply not possible. With 6 days left, the club gave up. The individual Swedish final at Hallstavik will go ahead as planned on Sunday, as will Saturday's league match at Bollnas. By the way, I am also coming to Berlin next weekend....
  19. Yes, obviously costs to create sufficient ice at OtterbÀcken became too high. Very strange decision to switch it to another venue with just 10 days left to the event. The plan is now to stage the pairs final at the Mariestad speedway track. The date will be the same, March 2.

  21. Extremely warm for being Moscow in early February. However, practice went okay and we can expect a terrific meeting tomorrow...
  22. I know at least four other who will come over from Britain to watch the Swedish pairs at OtterbÀcken. I landed in Moscow this afternoon, only about 0 degrees. The track at Krasnogorsk has been wet, but I think it will be okay for the weekend.
