Maurice Tate is an Uncle of the current Swales boys and currently works on the start gate at Redcar. I used to watch both Maurice and his brother, another Jackie I think, scrambling at the now defunct scramble track at Belmont, Co Durham in the late 50's. Maurice always won, but if he didn't then Jackie usually did. That was unless a Lampkin was visiting. I used to ride my bicycle down from Newcastle to each meeting.

That would be Jackie then. His nephew Jonathan Swales is the track curator at Newcastle and was the Conference League Champion riding for Mildenhall in the late 90's.

Dave Pavitt once said that the money that keeps IOW finacially afloat is made from the increased attendances during a 6-8 week summer period. In the past Dave has asked the IOW to be dropped out of the PT but was told it all or nothing for everyone, therefore there are many meetings at the beginning, and the end of the season, where it is known that there will be losses which are set against the paying summer meetings.

That's perfectly fair if there is only a couple of you, but not practical for groups who combine their efforts for the benefit of the group. If it's not for you, then buy them on the day.

Does that mean that Krakow are at home on the 21st August screm.

My wife and I are having a mini weekend break in August in Krakow, Poland. Does anybody know if the Krakow team are riding at home that weekend, and if so what is the start time and who are their opponents that day. Really appreciate it if you have this info, as I have searched everywhere and can't find it. Many thanks in anticipation.

Well, got our 28 tickets no problem, despite a bit of a wait(30 mins) for the operator instead of talking to a machine. Tried the TicketMasters site but it would not give us the block we wanted(N2) and gave us N1 and back a row. Got N2 and row 3, so better seats by speaking to the operator. Now for the rooms at the Uni. No probs with the date or any other date. It is when it is, and you just need to plan ahead. Simples.

Recognised your dig, but what about football teams every match. Cricket teams on the morning of a meeting.In fact can't think of m(any) sports where you do know the lineups 24 hours before a meeting. Bad attempt at a dig but.

Quite agree with your sentiments. No matter what happened last night, you could put your money on the usual suspects knocking GB and their performance. Nothing changes. I thought it was a good meeting and GB got over their dodgy patch with nil scores from Tai and Scott and come on very strong in the latter phase. Just imagine how close it could have been if Tai(twice) and Scott had got say second places and the result might well have been reversed. Middlo was spot on to take Barker out when he did(given his first ride) and showed his superb man management skills in bringing him back in for his final ride when he won it well. Barker will forget the missing rides and pleased as punch he got back in and won. That's what man management is about for those who don't recognise it. Agree with those who thought Tai would hold back in third place to help the Czech's. I though he had initially held back from the gate but then seemed to want to race for the extra point. I don't think Middlo knows anything about what team Russia will track on Thursday. I would think that negotiations are still on going with 2 Russians being brought in but no Emil. Either way, last night was our high spot and, whereas I think we will not disgrace ourselves then, I can't see us progressing to the final with Sweden and Australia going through. Pretty certain we will be seeing another thread like this come Friday morning with the same posters.

Quite agree, Rob is one of the hardest working officials in speedway, giving all his spare time to it. He is passionate about it and is extremely fair. If he was enraged about something, I would put my money on it, that he would have good reason cos if you are looking for a drama queen, Rob is not your man. Long live people who are passionate about the sport, it didn't do Ian Thomas any harm did it.

Great to hear the progress and inprovement in Alex's situation since last night. I think I wouldn't have been the only one who thought the worse, given the reports and or non updates from last night. I fully endorse Bandits4life's reluctance to post details after the crash, it showed respect to the rider and his family, and the views of others to the contrary are totally irrelevant. I liked Alex from his riding at Brough for the Vikings, and was very pleased he signed, and was thrilling, the fans at Berwick with his swashbuckling style. Let's all hope Alex makes a full recovery soon and gets back to racing for the Bandits. Ironic and unfortunate for Adrian to have witnessed it.

Plus Buster, George English, Pete Adams, Trevor Swales, Richard Frost and Judy, Tony Letheridge(Exeter), Hoggy, Morton, Gordon, Matt Davis and SCB. So who says that all the important people are giving it a miss.

I saw George Major ride for my team 10 years earlier but I was quite young (19).

Welcome back Nicki and let's hope this is a good omen for your World Championship chances in 2011. He rode some good lines and definately upped the power after a poorish first race. Thought there was several great races as the meeting got older, but felt the track was crying out for water and outside grip for more passing. Good start Nicki, this could be an interesting year for his reinstated team.
