Double points does not earn the rider double money....at any club! -
The Pioneer m/cycles supported Cubs travelled to Workington on Saturday and despite the weather forecast were greeted by bright sky and sunshine at the superbly run Northside Training Track for the match against the strong Northside Stars. The Cubs match was preceded by a full amateur meeting and two other NJL matches which , unfortunately, had consequences for the Cubs side. By the time the Cubs got on track Carl Basford , Alex Goldsbrough and ,guest for the match, Bailey Fellows had completed at least six rides and then Carl and Gav Parr ' guested' at very short notice for the Newcastle Gems against champions Halifax immediately prior to the Cubs match. The Cubs pair did tremendously well against the Dukes but this was not to be repeated against the home side of the Stars. Heat 1 set the pattern as, despite a good start, Gav fell on the first corner and was excluded. The rerun saw the strong home pairing of James Hitchen and George Rothery storm away to a 5-1 against a tired looking Carl. Heat 2 was the 125 boys with Alex and Bailey putting in a battling performance with Bailey grabbing a second place. Heat 3 saw another 5-1 to the Stars as the Cubs pair were slow away from the start. Race 4 saw a good performance from Alex and Bailey sharing the race 3-3 ( 17-7). Race 5 went the same way as the previous 500 races with a tired looking Cubs pair not in contention as the impressive Stars pair got their third 5-1. The final race saw a great effort from Bailey Fellows as he led from bend two and took the win for another 3-3 leaving the match result as Northside Stars 25 Redcar Cubs 11. A big thank you to Bailey for guesting for the Cubs and top scoring! Cubs scorer's Carl...1,0,0----1 Gav...fx,1,1----2 Alex...0,1',0---1&1 Bailey..2,2,3--7 Stars G.Prothery..3,2',3---8&1 J.Hitchen...2',3,2'---7&2 C.Pavitt.....3,3,2----8 G.Millar.....1,0,1-----2

Race 9 was another race win for Whelan as Rothery fell whilst behind giving a 4-2 to the Raiders side over the Stars. Race 10: saw the Bays Lewis Millar come to life leading the race when Kean Dicken took an alarming lunge into the air fence exiting bend two resulting in an awarded 5-1 to the Bays and a delay to the meeting as the air fence required replacing. Group Two consisted of Workington Meteors, Berwick ' Ferrow Decorators & A1 Cabs' Border Raiders, Newcastle Gems and a cosmopolitan side, the Cleveland ' Pioneer M/ Cycles' Bays made up of riders who couldn't be fitted into their own sides. A betting man would have had 20p on the Meteors and the Raiders going through but the Meteors had Kai Symonds-Walton in for the unavailable Kieran McCoy and the Raiders lost Ryan Morris at midnight and were unable to replace him. After 7 of the qualifying races it was even Steven then the 125 pocket rocket , Berwick's Luke Harrison won heat 8 from the Gems pair leaving the running totals as Meteors 11, Gems 11 Raiders 14 Bays 12. With just one ride each for the riders it was all to play for and Berwick's 500 boys took a 4-2 from the Meteors followed by a drawn heat 3-3 between the Gems and Bays. Match report Crofton Court M/Cycles supported Cubs v Berwick Border Raiders. Thursday saw the Cubs last home match of the 2016 season with the Cubs up against the experienced quartet from Berwick. Heat 1 saw Carl Basford produce a great start from gate 4 to win the race with Kev Whelan falling from 2nd place leaving the heat score as a 4-2 to the Cubs. Heat 2 showed that the Cubs would be up against it with the Raiders pair of Ryan Morris and demure Luke Harrison streaking away in impressive manner to win 5-1. Heat 3's start saw Carl lift alarmingly at the gate, handicapping himself as Mark McIlkenny got away quickly with his team mate . Carl was quickly at them and managed to pass Whelan but despite closing the gap was unable to take Mark who took the win, 2-4 to the Raiders. Heat 4 was a repeat of the first 125 race as the Raiders hammered home another 1-5. The final 500 race saw Carl repeat his first race win with William O'keefe getting a fighting third place from the previously impressive McIlkenny, 4-2 to the Cubs. The final race followed a familiar pattern with Raiders very quick youngsters gaining another 1-5 leaving the match result as Cubs 13 Border Raiders 23 Cubs Carl Basford, 3,2,3-- 8 Will O'Keefe 1,0,1----2 Elliot Kelly 1,1,1------3 Alex Goldsbrough 0,0,0-0 Raiders Kev Whelan 0,1,2--3 Mark McIlkenny 2,3,0-5 Ryan Morris 3,3,2'--8&1 Luke Harrison 2',2',3--7&2

The Hartburn Garage supported Redcar Cubs lost narrowly at Workington Meteors this evening but gave another good account of themselves in a very entertaining meeting. Heat one saw one of the craziest starts seen by this correspondent in many years. A grippy start line saw Carl Basford lift violently from gate one but not as spectacularly as his race partner Gavin Parr who not only lifted but careered across the track and unbelievably held on to the shock of everyone even the referee who strangely didn't put the red lights on and somehow everyone made it to the first corner. Whilst the Cubs held a 4-2 position with Carl out in front , Lloyd Ditchburn came to grief at the back causing the race to be stopped and a rerun ordered. After the events of the first start the rerun was a little less frantic from the Cubs pair allowing Jake Isherwood to take the lead. Carl quickly got passed his partner and a three lap battle ensued for the lead in an excellent tussle with Jake taking the win by half a wheel. Heat two for the 125 boys saw an all too familiar pattern as the Cubs pair initially gated well but were soon passed by the quicker home riders and a cursed Elliot Kelly again suffering machine malfunction. Heat 3 was as good as the first 500 race with Jake gating first with Gav and Carl cautiously away. This time it was Gav who gave the chase and tried an aggressive inside pass on bend 3 resulting in both riders hitting the deck and Gav being excluded. The rerun saw Jake Isherwood away first again but Carl showed a maturity way beyond his years to stalk him and pounce exiting bend 4 on lap 3 for the win putting the score at 11-7. The second 125 race saw further bike issues for Elliot and the quicker Meteors pair took a 5-1. Heat 5 finally saw a controlled start from all 4 riders with the Cubs pair out in front to take an impressive 5-1 with Gav following Carl home putting the score at 17-13. Unfortunately for the Cubs the 125 boys were again outclassed by the faster duo of the Meteors in the final race leaving the result as Meteors 22 Cubs 14. Meteors scorers; Jake Isherwood ( guest) 3,2,1---6 Lloyd Ditchburn. Fx,1',0-----1&1 Kieran Taylor. 3,3,3--------9 Luke Harrison ( guest) 2',2',2'----6&3 Cubs scorers; Carl Basford 2,3,3--8 Gav Parr 1',X,2'----3&2 Elliot Kelly 1,0,1-----2, Alex Goldsbrough 0,1,0--1 .

Love to see the complaints about charges for double header and poor team strength. Had to pay £30 at Edinbrugh last week and they never had a hope in hell of staging 30 heats! They had a 20 minute break after the first meeting and wondered why they didn't complete the second meeting! As for under strength teams, try being a Bears supporter! It's your choice not to support a team just don't be surprised when there isn't a team to support.

Can anybody put a score chart up please!
-
Nominated number 8's can only be used to take the rider replacement rides. I have no idea why teams using the R/R facility don't always name a number 8 as I've only been following speedway for 40 plus years so don't fully understand speedways complicated rules!

Closest yet! The Crofton Court m/cycles sponsored Cubs came the closest yet to recording their first win of the season against Workington Meteors last night but it just wasn't to be. With Carl Basford recording his first ever maximum with three race wins in impressive style it was looking promising with his 500cc partner Gav Parr supporting him well until mechanical issues stopped another potential 5-1 heat win. The Meteors 125 cc pair were just too good for the Cubs riders despite great effort so the Meteors ran out worthy winners 21-15 in a very keenly contested match. Scoretsina. Cubs. C.Basford 9, G.Parr 3&1, E.Kelly 2, A.Goldsbrough 1. Meteors: K.Taylor 9, B.Fellows 6&3, J.Embleton 4, L.Ditchburn 2&1
