Pretty sure they said the ex-GP rider was based in Poland or Polish or that might have been a Polish rider who they also spoke to. Apparently they spoke to numerous riders including an EL rider whom they said was more than happy to come and right up for up it, until he found out Glasgow raced on a Sunday ......must have thought it was still Shawfield on a Friday night, gotta love these riders who stay in the loop.............of course I may have picked it all up wrong as I battled manfully to stay awake during Sunday's meeting -
Pretty sure it was the Red Revolution Open, Lioness.....must be just a one-off, how long do revolutions last For anyone who is interested some of the names I caught who were taking part were.....Screen, Grieves, Bager(even money favourite in the early markets), Lawson, Harrison, Howarth, Birks, Grajczonek, Doolan, Smith and Patrick Nagy. Still waiting on confirmation on a few others. The Ashfield Classic is still scheduled for later in the season......weather and play-offs permitting, of course

I did go today and wished I hadn't. Nothing to do with the defeat, getting beaten doesn't bother me, but more to do with the fayre on offer and the delays and clouds of dust didn't help either. I just want to see great exciting speedway and I haven't done for a long time now. And if anyone fancies a pop, don't bother. Everyone is entitled to their opinions on what they have just paid to watch and I am of the opinion that my hard earned jimmies would be best spent in the boozer of a Sunday afternoon .....it has been part of my life for 37 years, but I am afraid I am just about done with speedway these days. I keep going back and tell myself to give it one more shot, but the majority of the time I always come away unfulfilled

Hard to believe, but Sunday has been Glasgow's regular race day for the best part of 20 years now.To be honest I fail to see how moving it is going to make a great deal of difference to anything, whether it be a winning team or a larger crowd. Installing floodlights in order to run night meetings would be a massive gamble and one which could cost the club dearly as speedway fans are creatures of habit.................anyway MJFC likes to get the peltin' simmet on of an evening these days

Stuart Robson always comes across as a top man, he speaks well anytime he is interviewed on SKY and seems a real genuine guy. His heat 13 yesterday was - as they say - proper speedway, Nige On the subject of Bager, pretty sure I heard them announce yesterday that this was his testimonial year and it would be staged at Ashfield at some point this season. Wether he will still be in the Stripes by then is open to debate, but he wouldn't be the first rider to stage his meeting at the track he has been axed from. What is it testimonials these days anyroad, do riders just apply for one whenever they fancy it, what's the criteria Remember the days when testimonials were actually earnt by a rider, through a bit loyalty. I know it's different now and riders get passed about like a scud jotter, but some recipients in recent years have left a lot to be desired. How many clubs has Henning ridden for the past few seasons, must be around four or five. -
A big mooth comes to mind!!

I would rather see young James McBain given a decent crack at it to be honest.........at least he will give it 100%. I know its a different era and the make-up of teams has changed a wee tad, but I yearn for the days when The Stripes were shecht, but the speedway was entertaining and it wasnt all about winning and we always had one or two SJL graduates in the team. There was something satisfying about watching a 16 year old progress from second half fence scrapiing to reserve to double figure man, a la the McKinna brothers, even the likes of big Leggy, Kenny Brailsford and David Cassells were great to watch around their home base and the home fans took to them because they identified with them. Too many foreign mercernaries now, give me one or two young Brits anyday.......went off on one there, MJFC

Neil Evitts rode the first few months of the 1980 season with the Stoke Potters before it was discovered he was 15, Sidney. That same year Robbie McGregor turned out for Glasgow in four meetings, two of which when he was still only 14! -
The Tigers' certainly encountered some severe doings during that 1985 season. Gattwick Rocket, and more often than not Steve would score more than the rest of the team put together He has always said he was happy at Glasgow and had a great time with the fans and thats why he never left.. That KOC final was actually 1991 and by his own admission he didnt perform well during the 1st leg at Shawfield and vowed to make up for it down at Arena, and he did. I think he reeled off four wins on the trot and when he and Jason Lyons gated on the 5-1 in the final heat that would have given the Stripes an unexpected win, the fans were gong wild until Petersen and Karger passed him down the back straight. Although Lyonsy held them both off to earn a draw on aggregate. It was ironic that Glasgow should win the league the season after he retired, but even more of a shame was the fact that he never got the chance to ride in his final meeting and say a farewell to the fans, as the last meeting of 1992 against Rye House was postponed and it was too late in the season to re-stage it.
-
Super Steve Lawson for the 15 years loyalty he gave to the Glasgow Tigers, especially when you consider he led some of the poorest line ups in the clubs history, who were routinely hammered on their travels throughout the mid-80s, with Steve fighting a lone battle. The fact he remained one of the top men in the NL for the majority of those years makes him all the more remarkable. As one of the leagues top riders, he could have named his price and had his pick of most clubs in the country, but he stuck by the Stripes from 1978 until 1992. and for that he will always be worshiped by the Glasgow fans of the era Ask any Glasgow fan and I am sure they will agree that its not inconceivable that Glasgow as a club would have folded during those dark days of the early/mid-80s if it wasnt for Steve and Jimmy Beaton senior.
-
Super Steve Lawson winning and then defending the helmet for the whole of the 1982 season He and Steve Wilcock were nominated to challenge for the helmet, after winter holder Mark Courtney moved up to the BL. If memory serves me right after beating Wilcok he went on to defeat Steve Naylor of Rye House, John Barker of Exeter and Simon Wigg. The night he raced Wiggy at Craighead park was probably the wettest meeting I have ever witnessed The ironic thing is he then lost it through default at Glasgows first home meeting the following season against Middlesbrough. This was the year they introduced the one off race against the top scorer and Steve was unwell and missed the meeting, handing the helmet to Middlesbrough reserve Paul Price (?)Not very fair, but there you go I can also remember the excitment when he took on and beat Martin Yeates - whose bike had the shiniest chrome I had ever seen the things you remember - before losing to Mike Ferreira in 1981. I also seem to recall him having his first crack at it in 1979, against Tom Owen perhaps? Like most people have been saying about the Golden Helmet, the Silver Helmet also seemed to hold a lot of prestige back then and speaking to Steve Lawson on Easy Tiger a while back, he said that season long defence of the helmet was one his proudest moments in speedway. There were also some atmospheric nights at a packed Shawfield Stadium in the late 80s when Kenny McKinna was taking on all comers in the one off race.
-
Great news, Shawn Moran was always my favourite non Glasgow Tiger when I was a lad. I will never forget the cold 1985 October night when he turned up at the less than palatial Craghead Park to pay tribute to the Tigers' Jim Beaton in his Testinonial and proceeded to put on a show like that place had never seen before or since, seeing him blasting around there was a sight to behold He was the ultimate showman and just oozed class on and off the track. Shooey was arguably at the height of his powers that year, so the fact that he came up to pay tribute to Jim was a measure of the man That night also made up for the disappointment that I felt when I missed seeing him at Ivan Maugers Farewell To Scotland at Powderhall a few weeks earlier. The powers that be wouldnt let him ride in the meeting proper, the allowed him a few token demo laps on a wet track before the meeting, but I missed them thanks to a traffic jam on the way to Edinburgh for the meeting

John Hack had the potential to be an excellent NL rider. I can remember him becoming a favourite of mine during his short stint in the Stripes at the tail end of 1977 and being slightly disappointed when he didnt return the following season. I seem to recall a fellow Mancunian of Hack's turning up and getting the odd team appearance around about the same time, his name was Carl Clarke, but he disappeared off the radar Interesting interview with Steve Finch aswell and I was surprised that he never mentioned Glasgow's Blantyre One track as a favourite of his, because he was superb around that place and one of the very few riders of the era who actually seemed to enjoy his visits there, including a guest appearance in the Stripes.
-
Does he think he would have been so driven and so successful in reaching his goals, if it hadnt have been for his tragic family circumstances. ......and can he recall his 1980 ILKOC visit to the less than sulubrious surroundings of the Blantyre Greyhound Stadium home of the Glasgow Tigers and super Steve Lawson showing him a clean pair of heels in the first heat

Back to the drawing board then. Cant see it being Wolbert, will he even be in the country? I suppose he is the best option if he is -

I reckon it might be Jason Lyons The choices are limited thanks to the bank holiday and so many teams in action. -
Seen him blasting around Ashfield a few times in the last couple of years and he is something else, he came out on Shane Parkers bike and was fying around like a seasoned pro He has been discussed on here and other forums quite often in the last year or two and the general consensus is that he is heading for a career in MotoGP. I think he is just one of these freaks of nature that crop up every so often, a pure natural talent who will be a superstar at whichever two wheeled sport he chooses, unfortunately for us, the odds are heavily against it being speedway.

I dont believe Nermark would even have been pencilled in for Vojens, mate. I think it was obvious they used him tonight thanks to his experience of the Norfolk Arena. Not too sure if Adams could be ersed with it to be honest. One things for sure, with all the star names that are missing, it should be a tight meeting on Thursday night and the Ruskies will be in amongst it too. Not coinvinced that the racing wil be tight .... but the scores should be -

From what I have read I would be very surprised to see AJ taking any part in the SWC, VH. It may or may not have been a different story for them tonight if Freddie and Zorro had picked up the six points that they deserved early doors The gamble on Nermarks NA experience didnt pay off for them and they will be a much different proposition in Denmark, as will that Aussie line up, they wont be a comfy at Vojens as they were around the NA. I think the two Scandinavian countries will edge through from Thursday night.
