I take the point, although for the record you omitted fourth-placed Lakeside who lost 12 away matches to Wolves' 10 (I assume by 'cup winners' you are referring to play-off champions Wolves). But it's a deceptive stat in any event; you could equally say that only the top two picked up more away points in the season than Wolves.

I wouldn't know either way on that one. But there was certainly a wreath with the Hackney Hawks emblem (and, indeed, a wreath of leeks!). To echo earlier comments, a 100-plus attendance of whom 20-plus were standing. A great pleasure, albeit on a sad occasion, for me to make the acquaintance of False dawn and also to meet up again and chew the cud with Jeff Scott and Lucifer Sam. The service itself featured tributes from daughter Carys and her husband and also from one of Bryn's longstanding friends. Entrance music: Groovin' with Mr Bloe -- Mr Bloe. Departure music: Magnificent Seven theme. Music during the service: Hymns and Arias -- Max Boyce (no surprises on that one) and Don't Worry, Be Happy which Bryn (unusually, given his generally encyclopaedic music knowledge) apparently credited wrongly to Bob Marley rather than Bobby McFerrin! The order of service also featured a number of Hammers action shots by Mike Patrick. In all, a very fine send-off for such a distinguished servant of the sport.

Steady on!

Well, I'm not sure quite how much attention was paid to that end by the leader of the proposed thousand-year Reich. Other strategic issues may well have been at the forefront of his mind. But truly excellent news for Belle Vue; fingers crossed for Coventry now.

Steve's support for the Coventry cause, and sympathy with the side's supporters, is clearly apparent from his posts throughout the thread. I suspect he's just tripped over his typing here and probably not realised yet.

Just drop me a PM on ticket availability... Will the scooter be dog-drawn?

British Speedway - Dead Or Alive?

Indeed, chutes would be very much in the opposite direction. Potentially a Freudian slip for our sport, sadly. -
I am. Drop me a PM.

Just in passing, and it may not be obvious to those travelling any distance (it wasn't to me until I checked!), both the crematorium and the Jolly Fenman are outside the London congestion charge zone so that's one thing fewer to worry about when making travel arrangements.

Ah, you're now following up your inside knowledge on what his late father would have thought by revealing your current inside hotline to the thoughts of the rider himself. How very clever.

Could be, could be. At the risk of sounding like Peter Adams (voice drops half an octave, eyes assume the appearance of sagacious bloodhound) it's not about being the best team all season, it's about being the best team in October. I like the look of the Rye side; with the obvious caveat about a very new line-up gelling with each other and also getting used to a new track, I think they should go well. But as it stands (ie the uncertainty over other clubs) I would have Wolves down as a top four side at the moment.

Or have other competing demands on their resources. Or have other circumstances you don't know about. Kindly don't patronise.

Gutsy pass round the outside in the very next heat of the match (1992 against Reading) from some stylish tyro called P. Karlsson. Wonder if he ever made it?
-
I would think Fricke's seven-point gap to Sedgmen too great. That's a big margin in a meeting with a maximum of 19 points on offer. Not exactly Sedgmen's to lose, but it's surely between him and Masters (who trails him by three in second place) now.

Discussion on the Belle Vue thread, I believe. The reply may have been posted here inadvertently.

It really is buy one, get one free with you two is it not?

Well, good as far as it goes. Obviously would prefer him going well rather than otherwise, but I don't think Aussie form necessarily means too much when the UK tapes rise.
-
Aussie form doesn't necessarily transfer to this country. Obviously from a Wolves perspective I'm happier to see Masters going well rather than not, but equally if he'd scored two I wouldn't be losing sleep over it.

Bike maintenance/engineering is listed as one of the modules on the Poultec programme. Away matches can be lonely affairs (sorry!).

Arguably the best child's name ever!

Many thanks for the details. I look forward to attending; would be good to meet up with any other forum members who are able to turn out.

As an exiled Comet who admittedly doesn't see much second-tier racing, I'm very impressed by this line-up. On the riders I've met and spoken to Proctor, in particular, if fully fit is an absolute bargain on his current average and having seen plenty of him at Wolves in earlier years his will to win is second to none (ask him some time what happened to Robert Miskowiak behind the trees at Monmore...). Roynon is obviously well-known to Workington supporters and, again, I saw plenty of him during his time at Cradley. Class act. Wolves also had Jorgensen briefly and he made a very good impression. Also a good personality, which should help in the morale stakes. You can regard me as chuffed of the Midlands!

Fondly remembered by Workington fans, had a good season with the Comets in '78. You mention his tight line on the kerb; I made occasional trips to watch the old Furness Flyers at Park Road, Barrow and Rob was among the visitors (Exeter?) on what was presumably his first visit. Out of the gate in smart fashion, onto the kerb, down the back straight, onto the kerb...and off towards the fence, frantically locking up harder and harder before a great save. Twas a tricky circuit, but good action. Apologies for digression.
