After the success of yesterday's training school Wayne Carter has scheduled in four more of his training schools on Scunthorpe’s main track. They will take place from 9am to 5pm on the following dates: Saturday 4th August - cancelled due to Wayne's unexpected unavailability. Sorry! Saturday 15th September Sunday 21st October Saturday 17th November There will be some bike prep/maintenance work plus lots of track time. Numbers are limited to 12 and there is space for two riders to hire a 500cc bike for the day. However, those using Wayne's bike(s) should have some motorcycle/speedway experience (if only with Wayne on the minitrack). Cost is £85 for riders with their own bikes (£195 for those who need to hire). Lunch will be provided. Snow cleans up as youth come out in force 17-year old Australian Tyson Snow was the dominant force in Saturday’s amateur meetings at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway as he relegated Summer Championship leader, Steven Jones, and the 2009 and 2010 champion, Gary O’Hare, to the minor podium placings. However, the most pleasing aspect of the meeting was the number of junior entries. 16 youth riders rode in three classes with Lewis Whitmore, Luke Woodhull and Liam Carr being class winners. In the other adult classes it was Glyn Edwards who won the Support Class ahead of the Pearce brothers (Martin and Simon) whilst the Novice Class saw Callum Harris, Jimmy Culbert and Ivan Howarth fill the first three places. Sadly one rider, Jay Atkinson, did break his foot on his debut at the track and the Cumbrian rider had it operated on yesterday. The delay did mean the finals weren’t raced but after the meeting organiser, Richard Hollingsworth, declared the meeting another success. “We had forty riders and fifty-six races so that has to be good. It was great that the medical staff and the volunteers were able to stay that bit longer so we could get to the end of qualifying. That was really appreciated. “To have so many youth riders ,especially the day before a British Championship round, was really impressive and was definitely a record. We even had a couple of real youngsters in the new 80cc class. They had to do three laps but it is great to keep attracting new kids to race. They are the future of the sport and the way the numbers have gradually increased over the last couple of years it can only be good for the sport. “With the British Youth rounds completed today (see separate press release tomorrow) then perhaps we might even get one or two more next month. As for the adult classes it is also great to see some new faces. We had three strong classes on Saturday and new winners in each one”. “The next round is on Sunday 7th October and will see the Summer Championship titles awarded. Finally I've found time to write a report: Jones makes it two on the trot Steven Jones defeated Dudley’s Darryl Ritchings plus former professionals, Benji Compton and Gary O’Hare, in the ‘A’ final to record back-to-back victories in Scunthorpe’s Summer Championship. It takes him up to second place in the Championship standings, behind David Holt, with a meeting in hand. The result sends out a reminder to National League clubs that the lanky 32-year old can more than do a job in that league should they need an experienced middle-order rider. In the Support Class Martin Wrathall recorded victory whilst Kevin Keay went unbeaten in the Novice Class. A good turnout of youth riders saw ten riders compete in two classes with Mitchell Beckett (250cc) and Ben Woodhull (500cc) running out winners. After the meeting Scunthorpe Scorpions’ Team Manager, Richard Hollingsworth, was pleased with how things had gone. “There were some really heavy showers around the country but we didn’t have a drop. We had to grade and water three times but it was another great meeting. When you look down the Open Class you know riders are really being put to the test and I don’t ever see us having problems finding new riders for the Saints’ side”. Scunthorpe Speedway's 71st amateur meeting will take place on Sunday 5th August (1pm first race). There are classes for all standards from raw novice to Premier League reserve whilst there are three youth classes which run if there are entrants. If you call and I am unavailable (e.g. work) please leave a message and I will get back to you at the earliest opportunity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For anyone who isn't aware our meetings provide at least five programmed rides and everyone gets to ride in a final. With no youth classes there will be at least six rides (five qualifiers and one final) programmed for everyone. There are trophies for the top three in each class and naturally we have a paramedic, first aiders and ambulance in attendance. One of the stadium cafes should be in operation and we have RM Race Spares (07403-334582) in attendance. Riders do not need new silencers or mudguards and can ride on day licenses (with no additional charge). Positions in all classes will be decided in the finals with every rider qualifying for one. THE WINNER OF EACH FINAL ADVANCES TO THE NEXT. (e.g. Winner of the 'E' Final advances to the 'D' Final etc. etc.). The Open Class usually sees National League standard riders taking part along with those close to break into that league whilst the Novice Class includes riders from complete beginners to those who can usually get a full slide on. The Support Class is now seen as an intermediate class where riders can challenge themselves against better riders without making the full step up to the Open Class. Summer Championship points are scored in the following manner: 16 points for 1st, 15 for 2nd etc down to 1 point for 16th (although that would be increased for all rounds if we had more than 16 riders for a class on one day). At the moment we are expecting five of the summer dates to be for the Summer Championship and riders will be able to drop one round for the championship so if all five rounds run then top four will count. If only four rounds run then it will be top three etc. etc. However, only riders who compete in the maximum number of rounds (four out of five or three out of four etc. will be eligible for championship trophies) Helmet colours are required but can be borrowed (please give advance notice if possible) whilst dirt deflectors are compulsory on all speedway bikes except in the Novice and Youth 125s classes. Hi Martin, Not for the first time we have had to make the decision to give the right people track time as opposed chase MDL glory. Scunthorpe will always prioritise rider development and will campaign for greater flexibility within the 2013 MDL rules to use riders riders whose NL average has not yet risen above 3.00. Riders like Danny Phillips and Tommy Fenwick really need MDL track time whilst others like Oliver Greenwood and Max Clegg also benefit from riding in the league. I appreciate there has to be some levelling of team strengths but I don't think using a second NL rider with a GSA of below three jeopardises that. I am happier that the MDL has become much more of a development league this year and I hope you approve of what we are trying to acheive with the team we are putting out on Wednesday!

It seems pretty straight-forward to me. I believe this was the first round of the championship where the meeting wasn't the only one of the week at the track in question. If we had the luxury of running the meeting on a Friday night instead of the Scorpions then we would have had a crowd closer to our National League levels. Have to say a big thank you to all those who did come along though.

From www.scunthorpescorpions.co Thirty riders, aged between nine and sixteen, competed over 37 races in little more than two hours at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday afternoon (3pm). It was the penultimate round of the British Youth Championship and just showed everyone present that there really are some quality young riders to come through the system in the next few years. One rider who is already to mix it in the professional ranks is 16-year old Adam Ellis who produced a impressive display to win the 500cc class. He led home Nathan Greaves, Tyler Govier and Scunthorpe Saints’ Danny Phillips in the final whilst Kelsey Dugard won the 250cc class and Kyle Bickley won the 125cc support class. Ellis, who is based in France, just had one blip when spinning out whilst leading his third ride but led the final from start to finish. Phillips held second place early on in the final but Manchester’s Nathan Greaves worked his way past at the end of the first lap and then the Teessider made a mistake trying to re-pass Greaves only to lose third place to Exeter’s Tyler Govier. Greaves was also competing in the 250cc class and after winning three of the previous rounds could have been crowned British Champion but a bike problem took away his chance of making the final. Scunthorpe rider Reece Downes qualified for the final in second place but touched the tapes and had to go from the 15-metre handicap mark. He was able to overhaul Lewis Whitmore for third place but it was Kelsey Dugard and Zach Wajktnecht who claimed the top two steps on the podium. The 125cc class might not have been for a British Championship but the class was no less competitive with fifteen riders taking part. Regulars of Scunthorpe amateur meetings claimed the three podium places with Workington’s Kyle Bickley heading home Ossett’s Jack Parkinson-Blackburn and Leicester’s Ben Woodhull. However, a first-timer at the Eddie Wright Raceway, Daniel Gilkes, was unlucky after claiming second place in qualifying but falling whilst in second place in the final. After the meeting Scunthorpe Scorpions’ Team Manager Richard Hollingsworth declared the event an over-whelming success. “It was such a great weekend. We had thirty-three riders come and practice on Saturday and then to run thirty-seven races in just over two hours today was fantastic. “It went almost like clockwork and to see some of the riders on display just show that this country are catching up other countries with our youth development. “Neil Vatcher and Phil Morris are doing a great job with the youngsters and everyone knows we do all we can at Scunthorpe with our training track, practices, training schools and amateur meetings. “It is a shame we have been missing from the youth championship for two or three years but hopefully the success of this weekend will see it become a permanent fixture and cement our place as a centre, if not the centre, for youth development in Britain. “Hopefully next year we can also avoid fixture clashes with our own Summer Championship and provide even more competitive racing for these kids. Track time is so important for them but I must admit I get a little fed up of hearing about the lack of track time being the biggest problem for youth development. “I’m not saying it isn’t a problem for some because it depends on where people live but I don’t think there is anyone who lives within an hour or two of Scunthorpe who has that problem. Hi Robbie, There are details of all the track opportunities at Scunthorpe at www.scunthorpescorpions.co. In particular the training track is available on a very regular basis. Wayne Carter runs fortnightly training sessions on it and he also runs training schools on the main track. We have regular practices (weekly during the winter) and monthly amateur meetings on the main track with a well attended Youth 125cc class. Wayne, along with Stuart Parnaby and myself are always available for advice whilst I deal with all the track bookings. Sorry, there aren't enough youth riders to do that. The classes, if there are entrants, are 500cc, 250cc and 125cc. Whilst age does prevent riders from moving up through the engine sizes too quickly the better riders will be ready for the larger engines sooner than others.

With Scunthorpe now back staging a youth championship round on 29th July the club have decided to run an open practice the day before. It will run from 1pm to 5pm. No bookings are necessary and as usual there is a discount of £10 for riders who are under 15 (£25, as opposed to the usual £35). Hopefully in addition to a few of Britain's ever-growing pool of youngsters the practice will see a few others come to the practice as a succesful session will only help keep the Scunthorpe on the youth championship circuit. For anyone wanting to stay over they are welcome to camp over at the track or for those looking for a hotel you will get discount if you mention speedway to the Normanby Hotel (www.normanbyhotel.co.uk). 3rd Annual Inter-Club Team Meeting The second leg of the annual inter-club meeting between the Scunthorpe Amateurs and the Southern Track Riders Club was raced at the Eddie Wright Raceway this afternoon and it saw home wins for the Scunthorpe ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams whilst the King’s Lynn based club’s ‘C’ team were victorious. Leading the way once again for the Scunthorpe ‘A’ team was Gary O’Hare with a 12-point maximum in his side’s 56-40 victory. The ‘A’ match saw the visitors decimated by falls and bike problems but Steve Jones, Rob Hollingworth and Jamie Moohan took 19 rides between them and played their part in some great races. Their efforts prevented a very solid Scunthorpe side from producing a runaway victory to add to their away win in the first leg the week before. In the ‘B’ match there was never more than five points between the two sides but after the Scunthorpe side drew level they finished off with three heat advantages to claim a 52-42 win. Leading the way for Scunthorpe were the heat leader trio of Andrew Blackburn, Simon Bence and maximum man, Arron Mogridge, who dropped just three points between them whilst the STR’s star performer was Sam Woods who racked up 14 points from six rides. However, Woods received solid support down the order to ensure the visitors claimed a 94-74 aggregate victory. It was the STR who also claimed the honours in the ‘C’ match despite Marty Rathbone’s impressive 17 point haul for Scunthorpe. Led by Sid Higgins with 11 points the STR claimed a 35-28 victory to add to their first leg win. After the meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth said “It was great to see some speedway and after the rains of Thursday, Friday and Saturday it just shows how much water this track can take. The track was slick but that is what you need for amateur speedway. Even so we still had three riders end up breaking bones in their forearms or hands. Of course we send our best wishes to Mike Russell, Sam Darroch and Jake Williams. Let’s hope they all have a speedy recovery because I know they all want to be back on track as soon as possible. “I must also thank our friends from the STR because these meetings are great events. They won two of the three matches on aggregate but it’s about competitive track time and you can’t get much more competitive than this. “Finally I must thank all of today’s helpers. We were down on numbers today and Anne-Marie and John Eyre were out in the middle for the full meeting. Their support is outstanding but we really could do with some more people to help out. These meetings are at the foundation of this club and we all know what happens if you lose the foundations of a place. The first two Sundays in July provide amateur speedway with the big team events of the season with the third annual Scunthorpe v Southern Track Riders meetings. They will meet at King's Lynn on Sunday 1st July (first race 12pm) and at Scunthorpeon 8th July (first race 1pm). I am looking for riders to represent Scunthorpe who, ideally, can ride on both legs (or at least the away one as I have a few riders who can only do the second leg). The format will see three 7-a-side, 15 heat matches. The 21 riders for each side will be roughly split into Open, Support (Intermediate) and Novice levels. I believe the first meeting will be the same as for the second leg £35 (payable to the home club). There will also be room for some junior support races but they won't be part of the Summer Championship. Amateur clash set for Eddie Wright Raceway The annual clash between the Scunthorpe and Southern Track Riders Club amateurs is set for the Eddie Wright Raceway next Sunday, 8th July. The head-to-head is the only such event in British speedway and the first leg took place earlier today at King’s Lynn. In the Open Class it was Scunthorpe who took the honours 35-28 with British Veteran Speedway Riders’ Champion Gary O’Hare leading the scoring with ten points. Providing great support was New Zealander Sean Mason who won all three of his rides for 9 points whilst top scorer for the STR was Andy Mountain with 13 points (including a 6-point tactical ride). Whilst Scunthorpe took first leg honours in the top match it was the home side who claimed leads in the other two. The Support/Intermediate class match saw the Southern Track Riders Club claim a 52-22 victory with the Novice Class a little closer; finishing 46-27 to the STR. After a break due to track unavailability the master of mini-track training; seasoned Elite League rider Wayne Carter; is to recommence his training schools on Scunthorpe’s main track. It will take place on Saturday 14th July from 9am to 5pm. There will be some bike prep/maintenance work plus lots of track time. Numbers are limited to 12 and there is space for two riders to hire a 500cc bike for the day. However, those using Wayne's bike(s) should have some motorcycle/speedway experience (if only with Wayne on the minitrack). Cost is £85 for riders with their own bikes (£195 for those who need to hire). Scunthorpe Scorpions' number one and club captain, David Howe, will cover for regular training officer (and another former Scorpions' captain) Wayne Carter on Scunthorpe Speedway's training track on Saturday 30th June. There are a small number of spaces available. The track has been running for five years now and has seen plenty of league riders start out on it. The sessions are proving very popular with everyone who attends as they give fans and prospective riders an opportunity to try the sport without having to buy a bike and all the equipment. The sessions include the use of the club's bikes (mostly 140cc and 150cc engines) and all the protective equipment. The cost is £70 for the four-hour session whilst those with their own bikes/equipment can ride for £25. Those using club equipment/bikes are limited to 12 whilst it is rare there is more than one or two riders with their own bikes.
