  1. Georgie Wood looks a natural round Arlington, according to my friend who has seen him.

Exciting times just around the corner in Sussex. Can't wait for it to start.

Just have to work out how to "duck out of work" on Friday and look like a VIP :)

I too am disappointed that the gates don't open till 5pm. This is the NEW concept, first introduced last year. Why, I don't know... Like you say, the day was always open to the public who wanted to go and be part of it. There was never massive numbers, or any problems with the fans, just something that those, who choose, could do . It gave some the perfect opportunity to meet the riders and get some decent photos of their idols. Now everything has moved on. They don't want the fans to engross on the Press and Tele boys taking similar pictures. We, the fans will have to wait until the end of the proceedings, and be satisfied watching a few laps after 5pm.

Its just another reason, highlighting the low importance the fans are given, and thus fuels the public perception, that has seen the interest continue to wane over the past decades..........

Once upon a time, I use to take a days holiday from work, just to attend the Press Days. Now, not allowed in till 5pm, I question the logic of even bothering to go........

Like you, I used to take a days holiday. Loved P & P day just sitting there watching and taking it all in, no rush, just relax and watch the lads. Now, do we want to travel 30+ miles for P&P ?

This was always the supporters day as far as I was concerned, seeing a little bit of behind the scenes so to speak. It seems to be ' not bothered about supporters ' to me !!!

It is Press Day. The Press are working.

They do not want to be crowded by well-meaning fans trying to get shots.

A good set of pictures and background footage has to last a season.

It is not a day for the fans as you suggest - the name is on the "tin" and should do that job.

  3. I don't reckon they'll invite Johnson

I think you are right. Johnson has said far too much for his own good about Eastbourne and others on social media. I can well understand him being worked up about it all but he went too far as far as Eastbourne was concerned.

He has quietened down now but you cannot unsay what has been said.

  4. be good if bjarne could get an invite to defend his title..

i wonder if an elite league rider has ever appeared in a national league (tier 3 ) meeting even as a special event ie match-race?

I have a feeling the rules don't allow cross-league events as you suggest.

Maybe Bjarne could come and present the trophy to the winner.

The Championship of Sussex will plug the gap in the Eastbourne fixture list caused by the postponement of the American Dream Team tour.

Club director Connor Dugard moved swiftly to set up the individual meeting which will take place on Sunday, April 12 (3.30pm).

The Dream Team tour became a victim of the visa problems which are bedevilling British speedway at the moment.

The Americans would have been the second meeting of the club’s first season in the National League.

The Championship of Sussex is traditionally the premier individual meeting at Arlington and was staged with regularity for many years. In recent times it has been a sporadic feature on the fixture list, last held in 2013 when Bjarne Pedersen emerged victorious.

Dugard said: “We have arranged the Championship because we wanted to keep the momentum going and get people back in the habit of regularly coming to enjoy speedway racing at Arlington.

“The local derby on Good Friday against Kent Kings opens our season and I was keen to make sure we didn’t have a blank date the next weekend.

“It is also vital that our riders get as much track time before the league season begins.

“All our riders are competing and they certainly will want to establish ‘bragging rights’ at this early stage.”

Already confirmed: From the Eagles – David Mason, Richard Andrews, Kelsey Dugard, Georgie Wood, Danny Warwick, Marc Owen , Niall Strudwick plus Tyler Govier (Cradley), Adam Sheppard (Kent), and unattached Charley Powell, Matt Saul and Nick Laurence.

“This line-up will give some of the unattached guys the chance to catch the eye,” Dugard commented.

There are four more riders to be named, one of whom will Eastbourne’s seventh team member, yet to be officially named.

Great news from Connor. Well done.

Dead right on keeping the continuity going. Really important. that was the big problem with the EL - you always had to check when the next meeting was.

Be good to see the Eagles pitching in against each other.

  6. Must be 200 odd spaces in front of main grandstand with the overflow car park double the size of the main car park behind the pits. Queues to get in turnstyles nearer to start time can be a bit slow. So to have time to get your programme a beer and a pizza and chips you want to aim to be there 1/2 hour before start time for the bank holiday meets.

    Thanks for the information.

  7. True, I've only been to Brandon once, and they were dour bunch, let alone when they visited Arlington, always seemed to be moaning about something......probably a midlands thing.

Yes, the Coventry visitors, while always welcome, were hardly a barrel of laughs

  8. I see Martin & Connor are putting the stadium to good use. The track is too wet to race as Connor put on fb so they're running a pitbike meeting instead with over 30 riders. Hope it goes well could be a great way to bring in new people.

Makes sense. Maybe some of the pit-bikers will get the speedway watching habit too. Or, some might become a star of the future.

Nice to see Arlington becoming a pit of a motor-cycling centre.
