The thing that astounds me is that there was no provision put in place for any possibility weather wise BEFORE the meeting.

Manchester is hardly noted for being sunny and dry all year round.

If rain forecast no parade. Just possibly could have got to each rider having his four programmed rides.

You could argue Ellis didn’t get a chance to ride at Cardiff last year. If he was in the mix there would have been less of an outcry.

Perhaps people need to take off their (insert colour of team) tinted glasses and say what would have been a fair decision.

Don’t call out Ellis. What rider would turn it down? Call out the powers that be who had no provision in place.

    Five programmed rides!

    Right...

For all those whining about the "stupid" scoring system, here are the points as they actually scored, and also as they would have been with the standard 3, 2, 1, 0 format.

              Actual  Standard

    GB        32         22
    SWE     30         21
    AUS      30        20
    DEN      28        18
    CZ         27        18
    POL      26         17
    FIN       16         10

So, as you can see, the ONLY differences would be:

Sweden one point better than Australia (but it wouldn't have changed anything)
Denmark and Czechia would be level (but it wouldn't have changed anything)

Is the scoring THAT crazy? Or are you just thinking, "We've always done it this way, so we should keep doing it this way!"

That’s fine as far as qualifying goes, but if you must have a final to decide the winners, rather than top scorers, then 4-3-2-0 becomes a nonsense.  2nd and 3rd being champions!!  What a nonsense.  Thank goodness the winners (whoever) were 1st and 2nd in the final race.

Can’t make it? Stream it. Extra money going to the promotion. Large chunk of income being missed out on by Brum promotion.

Only a portion of what they’d get if you actually paid on the gate.
“Can’t make it” sounds a good argument, until you consider “won’t go as I can stream it”.
Even worse when there’s a number who “won’t go” and watch it together on the same stream.
Sorry, but it’s just further damage to an already battered sport.

Yeah exactly. Apparently he saved speedway in Swindon a few years ago but now he can't force them to build it. He's full of sh1te. Someone on the Adver comments said that Gaming were initially told to build the stadium before any houses were built but said they can't afford it without the funds from the housing. If that's true and SBC agreed to that then that decision has killed us. Why didn't SBC or Tomlinson do their research on Gaming before agreeing to that. £££££££££££££???????

Don’t you know the answer to your question????

In 1977 though the promoters were paying most of the riders "good second job money", which was usually more than their main job...

And most riders (the vast majority who were 'non superstar" status), didnt expect to earn enough to have six months off each year...

The majority classing themselves for example, as a "Wagon diver who rode Speedway" not "A Professional Speedway rider"...

The sports as a collective takes in millions, and pays out millions..

"To achieve exactly what precisely?" would be a question worth asking themselves when they next meet..

    Nail is hit on head

Many thanks Norbold. This was an intresting programme. It was nice to see the old Wimbledon and Southampton tracks, alongside a slice of the Ove Fundin vs Bjorn Knutsson Golden Helmet match race at Southampton.

Most interesting to me was the start, where the riders were held a couple of yards (don’t recall the exact measurements) and when the green light (or whatever) came on, they moved to the tapes which immediately rose. No gardening, no rolling.
    Ah, the good old days.

Will we ever learn from them?

John Earey ("As long as we know") also at White City was very good...never a great fan of Peter York despite being the presenter at Cowley for many years!

John Earry was also at Brandon, and was among the best I’ve heard anywhere in 50+ years. Peter York rates just below bottom!
