I’ve no idea what today’s league programmes are like. Back in the 60’s they were 2 sheets of A4 folded in half to make 8 sides of anA5 programme with very little content. I always bought one though.

Content from the CO was always excellent at The Hive

1928 Middlesbrough programmes listed him as David 'Onanoff' Johnson (no 'd' in onanoff).  He had a few falls, but also recorded some heat wins during a brief career.  David Johnson appeared at Middlesbrough in 1928 to 1930, Whitley Bay, Gosforth, Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1929 and York in 1931.  He rode as reserve for York in a National Trophy match at Leicester Super in 1931, falling in his first race and scoring one point from two other rides.

I had a browse through the British Newspaper Archives, and there are a handful of articles which include the name “Onanoff” Johnson, together with one which refers to him as David “On and off” Johnson, leading Middlesbrough star and their most daredevil rider, who had completed the speedway season unscathed, only to badly break his leg playing football.

I noted other nicknames in the few articles I found…

    Riskit Riley

    Broadside Burton

Skid Skinner - which reminded me of Skid Pitcher!
    Smoky Stratton

    Dare-devil Beckett

    Broncho Dixon

    and a couple of more well-known ones…

    Sprouts Elder (James Lloyd Elder)

    Buster Frogley (Arthur Robert Frogley)

On another Thread I queried a nickname of Arthur Forrest being known as the 'Black Prince'. Chunky kindly confirmed this for me…. I just thought it might be fun to see how many others we could come up with and, if possible, how those Nicknames were earned.

    At Brandon…

Johnnie Reason - Cream Bun Kid

    Les Owen - Muscles

Nigel Boocock - The Beau, Little Boy Blue

    Tom Ridley - Tiddler

    Ron Mountford - The Man

    Bryan Elliott - Chirpy

This Post appears to abide with a current debate taking place on YEARS GONE BY?

Is there a purpose in referring to a post from 2003?

Having just received my latest edition of "Backtrack" I read with dismay that the next editions of both magazines may well be the last as the present team of Tony and Susie wish to move on. I sincerely hope that someone else picks up the mantel because I thoroughly enjoy reading both magazines and not having either to read will create a massive void in my retrospective insight into speedway's last "Golden Era".

May I wish both Tony and Susie very best wishes and thank you most sincerely for producing two great magazines which I will cherish and continue to read the back numbers in an attempt to re-fresh diming memories.

Oh no!  I had to cancel Backtrack for economic reasons but still subscribe to Classic, which I thoroughly enjoy - so professionally produced, full of my best era with our wonderful sport.

I would miss it if it disappeared!

Thanks for checking that out MR - pretty close as I'm sure Laurie was out with a back injury so Sagey would have been the first RR of the evening

Date was 22 April 1980.  RR was not in operation.

You are correct about Mike Sampson’s five ride maximum next meeting.

Think it was April 14th 1980

Crayford verses Young Sweden at London Road

Tommy Nilsson won the heat I believe - not sure of second swede, think the Kestrels pairing was Alan Johns and R/R Laurie Etheridge but that's a guess

Certainly remember the riders from the second meeting more - verses Nottingham Outlaws - Mike Sampson went thru the card for a 15 point full max

Looking at the date, if correct,  it was 42 years ago yesterday - off for a large G&T to get over the shock of that date ....

    Looked at Speedway Researcher…

Tommy Nilsson, Alan Sage, Alan Johns, Hasse Danielsson 58.2 3-3

Are Start Marshals still required to wear the "neutral" stripey tops? Our SM at Leicester has broken ranks and now wears Lions merch.

... and are SM's in communication with the ref using an ear piece and mic?

Really should by in neutral garb.
