    G.goodwin

dlprezes, You have to be aware that in these years, - early '60s - , EVERY British rider with a speedway bike got a chance in the World Championship. This could include reserves/novices at a track who would fill in for absentees or injuries on the night. We also had a Qual.Rd. at Rye House when it was just a training track for non-league riders. So there will be names that no one except the local fans had heard of or seen, and may never have made it to league-rider status.

    Wallace

So why are you called "2ndBender" ? A Heathens' win, - but of course. Much better than present day performances.

    Wallace

Sorry, but my prog is unmarked, being a later re-acquisition. I understand why there's a query, - Wallace isn't listed in the season's summary of Newport PL scorers (nor any other team.) In the half-hearted Metropolitan Lge scorers he has no entry with 'NewPool' but a zero with Weymouth. Sthn Lge scorers aren't given in the history of 1964. Burning question then is, "Did he indeed partake in that first SL meeting? - or was he scratched from the printed prog?" I wasn't present, I was on shift, but I sent the wife-to-be along to her first ever 'away' match, complete with green-&-white rosette and rattle. Can she remember if he rode? She can't even remember going ! . Some things make impressions and stay in our minds forever, - For others, ....... . (p.s. Yes, she's still here, bless her. No, she hasn't been to speedway for many years.) pps. Stuart Wallace is photographed in that first programme, along with Vandenberg & Golden. What a juxtapose.

    Wallace

I can confirm that he rode No.2 in the first ever Newport opening mtg versus Cradley on April 17th 1964, (S'thn Lge match.)

    Silver Helmet Memories

. Okay, time does play tricks with the old grey cells, - you can check any doubts out Here It was '85, but Mogridge was the Holder and Middleditch the Challenger. After taking the Helmet on that occasion it proved to be his only success, - and even that dubious, some may suggest - , for Middleditch lost it at his first defence to Paul Thorp.

    Mike Parker

Mike Parker didn't promote the 1959 Cradley meeting, but he was there and drove in the Speedcar heats, but he was no doubt involved with the promotion in proposing and then setting up the meeting. The programme tells us that that meeting was promoted by 'Cradley Heath Stadium Ltd' which was the same business that promoted in the subsequent years, the Jephcott family. The details incl'g officials on p2 is pretty much the same in '59 as in the subsequent 1960 progs.

    S. Africa 2011

Numbers I don't know. The programme is a committee-run club operation for members and family rather than a commercial promotion, with 30-40 heats ranging from Pitbikes, Quads, Mascot Speedway as well as U21, and Sidecars, and parents and family all collaborating for a monthly Sunday afternoon social as well as a race meeting. Senior racing would be NL level, as identified by the inclusion of Byron Bekker and the recently-departed Deon Prinsloo, ex Wimbledon.

    Scunthorpe/sheffield Vs Dudley

I think it can now be said, with gratitude, that postings on this forum and elsewhere on the matter of our team's recent form have not been in vain, but heeded, (that's all we asked for,) viz the last 2 management bulletins on the Dudley website: 'Signing' and 'Team Meeting'. Thanks. Let's now move forward, hopefully to a more fruitful season-end.

    Scunthorpe/sheffield Vs Dudley

Some of us have been following Heathens thru 'difficult times' that lasted several seasons, long before the glory days, and longer than the present half-season, and dont need lecturing on that score. Results of the last three league matches have been abysmal: praise has been given and welcomed when success has been achieved, and when the opposite results then the converse applies and has to be acknowledged, - acknowledged that the collective performance has been unacceptable. I'll remind you that the object of a speedway match, and the object of the league, - however pleasant, charming, well-intended and decent the bunch of lad are - , is to win, not just to have an enjoyable time, and the task of Mgt is to i) provide the means, and having done so, to ii) stimulate, motivate, kick a--- if needs be, so that the provided means deliver the stated objective. Action is now needed.

    Scunthorpe/sheffield Vs Dudley

No, Greyhound, you were right first time. Yes Simon, we're happy to see Heathens back on track but its no good deluding oneself that recent performances don't warrant criticism ! A top scorer yesterday who only takes 2 pts from the opposition, (check it out); a top scorer at our previous away match with just 4pts, all gifted. And it does certainly seem that Roynon has come back too soon and will be doing his own long-term injury recovery no good, nor that of the Heathens score sheet. Action is now needed from mgt, - in the pits on the night, and on the phone to strength the team, though I feel that its too late now for the play-offs, never mind the title.

    Silver Helmet Memories

To expand; These 2 riders dominated the Silver Helmet over the 5-year period, 1975-'79, each having a whole year unbeaten, - Joe in '76 before moving up a division to Hull, - Tom in 78, plus most of '79, until a broken leg in August of that year caused him to forfeit the Match Race Championship. http://speedwaychampions.com/BritishMatchRaceChmpshp.aspx The 2 met twice, first in '75 when Tom as the Holder lost to Challenger Joe 1-2, 0-2. A year later Tom challenged Joe unsuccessfully at Teesside and at Berwick; result 2-1 & 2-0 in Joe's favour.

    Colts V Heathens

The Track: It will be known to anyone who's read this forum throughout the season so far that the Belle Vue track has been in poor condition throughout 2011. Coercion: Last night's meeting was the second time within a month that Heathens (and who knows how many other riders in such a period,) have been exhorted to ride on to Ht.12 to get a meeting to a 'result' stage. (The previous arose because of rain.) Clearly the concerns of promoters have not been for riders but for themselves! The ref must take regard for the view of experienced riders and of a team's skipper, who should speak for the team, not ask for 14 differing views, (The young may think they're immortal, but they're not!)

    Youth Gold Trophy 2011

For the 10th time in 11 years of this competition a Dane has again taken the 'Speedway 80cc Youth Gold Trophy', - FIMs 'world championship' in all but name for 14-17 yr olds. Not just the title but the 1,2,3 in every year except 2007 when a Swede dare challenge them at their own game. The result is excellent testament to Denmark's long establish youth scheme, (again paying dividends by another SWC event win on the same day.) See http://speedwaychampions.com/U21andYouthChampions.aspx for past YGT winners, - Speedway, Grass Track and LongTrack. Just when will UK take note? 1st Patrick Josefsen (Denmark) - 11 (3,2,2,3,1) 2nd Martin Steen Hansen (Denmark) - 10+3 (3,1,3,0,3) 3rd Frederik Jakobsen (Denmark) 10+2 (1,2,2,2,3) 4th Casper Woryna (Poland) - 10+1 (1,0,3,3,3) 5th Lyager Andreas Hansen (Denmark) - 9 (0,2,2,2,3) 6th Sam Jensen (Denmark) - 9 (2,3,0,2,2) 7th Johan Jensen (Sweden) - 9 (1,1,2,3,2) 8th Simon Selch (Denmark) - 8 (0,3,3,1,1) 9th Patrick Haug (Denmark) - 8 (0,3,1,2,2) 10th Jason Jorgensen (Denmark) - 7 (3,3,0,1,0) 11th Brady Kurtz (Australia) - 6 (2,1,3,0, d) 12th Glenn Moi (Norway) - 5 (3,1,0,0,1) 13th Jonas Jensen (Denmark) - 5 (2,2,0,1,0) 14th Freddie Broms (Sweden) - 5 (2,0,1, t, 2) 15th Egeskov Viktor Jensen (Denmark) - 4 (0,0,1,3,0) 16th Hess Mads Jensen (Denmark) - 4 (1,0,1,1,1) 17th Koldsgaard Kasper (Denmark) - 0 (0) 18th Jooa Partanen (Finland) - NS .
