Then you should care because IF there is a Thurrock Council debate on the issue those opposed will almost certainly raise the matter that the petition was on a national basis rather than a LOCAL basis.

There might be no Thurrock Council debate on it so what’s the problem. They have backing from the council and the local MP. You’ve made your point the petition is worthless. Let’s move on

Then why do they sign? It tends to create an unreal figure in regard to attendances when discussion is held in regard to a base for a possible new track.

In a similar instance I have been led to understand that a campaign to save Coventry's Brandon Stadium has many supporting signatures. Again, how many of these are actual base-root Coventry supporters rather than from the 'here's something to sign' brigade who have never been near the place? Or live so far away that they will not visit the place anyway?

    Who cares? Every signature helps.

What is the facilities difference between running Championship & National League? Tracks should be licenced as safe or deemed unsafe, there can't be any middle ground. The attitude of don't worry about NL riders they only poodle round has been holding the sport back for years.

I have no idea Iam just saying what the presenter said on the radio but Iam guessing it’s nothing to do with the safety of the riders.

As I understand it, there were, potentially, two dates that we could have run. The problem was that we had two league matches, a Championship Shield and likely Play-Off meetings to fit in.

That is right Tony, Cook said we had 7 meetings to run and we was offered 2 dates by the landlords at Arena.

Perhaps Lakeside did. The point I was saying, is if you are looking for locals to support, say a new stadium application, due to the general public not really knowing what speedway is, the chances are they will just think it is noisy smelly motorbikes, that is about to appear on their doorstep. One of the problems for that, I feel, is speedway has such a low profile and most people haven't a clue what it is.

I totally agree and for a while Lakeside did loads of different things to try and get more locals through the gates. The product needs to change to keep these new people coming back.

Some of that fault is speedway's and the people who run it. Speedway is such low profile, the average man in the street just thinks oily motorbikes making a noise. The sport i.e. the 'promoters' don't bother to try and raise it's profile to the locals or try and raise speedway's general profile.

Lakeside tried hard to promote the sport to the locals.

  7. Just listened to Cook on the radio who said they are still fighting to stay on the Arena Essex site due to half of the land not being suitable for houses anyway, he also said the cost of moving to Rye House cost him and Stuart a fortune and if any third party wants to help it would purely be as a fan as they would lose lots of money just to keep the hammers name going. He did say the BSPA wouldn’t let them run at Rye even if they could due to the way they fell out regarding Rye House closing. He didn’t say where but said him and Stuart will be moving onto other projects but there is two people dedicated to continuing the fight to get Lakeside back on track. Iam pretty sure he also said there is no chance of the club running for at least the next two seasons. Lastly he said what happened with Swindon was a big positive and the local Thurrock MP is good friends with the Swindon MP so hopefully that can be a big help to the hammers.

The crowd sizes for events at Arena have absolutely nothing to do with the stadium closure.  The event organisers paid the rent to a private company regardless of attendance.  This is completely down to acquiring land for even more housing in South Essex.

The Government had earmarked the land for a Compulsory Purchase Order years ago.  Some Hammers riders back in 2008 told me that Stuart & Jon had been looking for a site for a potential new stadium in areas like Basildon as the Thames Gateway housing plan was going to claim the large Arena Essex plot of land sooner or later.

I did hear some rumours that the ground couldn't be used for housing due to issues from it's former quarry days, but that seems untrue or to have been overcome.

Let's just hope we all see an Essex Hammers team in a new stadium very soon!

Didn’t the people renting the stadium have a two year lease and decided not to take up the second year due to poor crowds? Think it was more to do with the four wheeled events but Iam sure that’s what they said, they also said poor crowds at the speedway but Cook said they get the same money from them regardless of the crowd.
