  1. Lack of a superstar number 1 at Worky might be one of the reasons too . Ok when Stoney ruled the roost at Derwent Park , the track was very slick . Co-incidence or not , I don't know , but the track has been pretty decent in recent seasons . But there's no doubt when the Comets had either Stoney or Stead or both spearheading their septet , the crowds were a lot larger than now .

But also what is obvious is that Derwent Park is in need of a fair bit of upgrading , the main stand in particular is looking very threadbare . But that is no doubt out of the Comets' promotions hands , but not helping matters nevertheless .

I sincerely hope the threat to the future of speedway in Workington is unfounded and the Comets come to the tapes in whatever form the Premier League presents itself in 2017 .

Derwent Park is being renovated right now in preparation for hosting the 4 Nations international RL game between Scotland and New Zealand on 11th November.

  2. Pawlicki was hit from behind and the replay of the incident shows that Pawlicki had nowhere to put his left leg to stabilse himself. don`t think any rider would bail out intentionally when in such close quarters of other riders and at such high speed. Doyle was desperate and on a mission similar to ones he`s done before. On what I saw there didn`t seem to be much protestations from the Ozzies in the pits so theres a clue there.

When Doyle hit Pawlicki it straightened him up briefly and at that speed he was never going to be able to recover and turn the bike properly. It was inevitable he was going to fall. Completely the correct decision to exclude Doyle.

  3. Thought the ref made a few mess up's last night if you follow the rules in the programme - only 1 tac and 1 joker permitted per team - Aussie ht 12 Masters replaced Josh then heat 15 Holder replaced Josh with Doyle on a joker in heat 16, so I make that 3!!

No tacs permitted between seats 17-20 - Sweden make a late change and Put Freddie in ht 19 as a tac in place of Antonio.

If that's what the programme said then it's wrong. The rules are that each rider can have one TS ride so long as you're 6 points behind, it's one per rider not one per team. They can be made at any time in the meeting. The heat 17-20 rule only applies to the joker.

  4. What I do not understand is why Rosco used Tai as a TS and Joker at the same time rather than as a Joker in his programed ride then as a TS later, we could have had 3 more points.

No we couldn't, if a rider has his programmed ride as the joker then he can't also have a TS ride as well. That's why the joker should always be used as a TS. Rosco got it spot on, and the Aussies screwed up by using Doyle as joker in his programmed ride.

  5. I think this is one of those situations where common sense should prevail.

For example, we've all seen scenarios where a rider has hit a rut mid-bend and lost control but managed to regain it and stay upright. However, the loss of control has caused someone behind to lay the bike down or take evasive action where they've come off the bike. Technically the rider behind has caused the stoppage by parting company with his bike, but common sense tells you that the primary cause was the rider in front who lost control and he should be excluded. I think most people would accept and agree with that.

Therefore, in this case I think Dudek should have gone as his EF was the primary cause of the stoppage regardless of the sequence of events that followed.

You make reference to the British Final being a meeting packed with riders who have haven’t achieved anything, if the best rider and current World Champion decides to pull out then yes it absolutely is that…..if not it is the meeting where the World Champion is racing which adds to its importance.

That completely misses the point he was making I think. The fact is that the British Final has become an irrelevance, a meaningless title with zero prestige on the world stage. Tai Woffinden competing or not doesn't change that fact. To be British champion means what exactly these days ? This isn't the halcyon days where a British title was worth winning in a field of riders who could all compete internationally, it is in fact a stark reminder of how far the stock of British speedway has sunk. This discussion shouldn't be about the fact that he isn't riding in it, the more important point is why it isn't a priority anymore. Instead people like to have their little knee-jerk reactions instead of thinking about the wider issues that Woffinden is indirectly raising.

  7. What speedway really needs is an outsider in the mould of someone like Barry Hearn coming in to shake things up and make it more marketable. Look what has happened to darts, as an example. They've taken something that was largely seen as an old mans pub game and turned it into a vibrant experience that draws big TV audiences, fills arenas and has attracted massive sponsorship money. Ok, it all a bit "laddish" but if you want to attract the money then you need to appeal to the masses, not to Howard & Hilda sitting in their matching kagouls on folding chairs on the 2nd bend drinking tea from a flask.
