  2. Boast claims Christmas Cracker

Market Rasen Short Track racer and former speedway rider Peter Boast fought off a strong challenge from the Cleveland Bay’s Rusty Hodgson to win the Christmas Cracker Short Track meeting at the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday afternoon. A large crowd was treated to some top quality racing as stars from a variety of motorcycling disciplines duelled around the 285-metre shale track and after 24 races it was Boast who finally claimed the title.

However, Boast did have to do it the hard way. He reversed his semi-final defeat to Hodgson and eventually passed the North Yorkshire rider half way through the 12-lap final. Completing the podium was Stamford’s Victor Bull whilst Woodhall Spa’s Steve Plater was the pick of the road racers finishing a creditable 6th. Former Scunthorpe Scorpion Paul Cooper was a late addition to the field and as usual provided plenty of entertainment on his way to 8th place. Three other speedway riders also made the final with former Berwick and Edinburgh rider Carl Shield finishing 9th, Sheffield’s Ricky Ashworth 10th and Boston rider Simon Lambert claiming 11th place.

Ten quad bike races also provided their fair share of entertainment and it was the Hooker brothers from Caistor who eventually claimed a 1-2 at the top of the podium.

Short Track Christmas Cracker Grand Final Results:

1 Peter Boast (450 Team Silkolene Suzuki)

2 Rusty Hodgson (450 Dynomax CCM)

    3 Victor Bull (450 Yamaha)

    5 Amanda Renshaw (350 Banshee)

    6 Charlie Welbourn (525 Polaris)

  3. I apologise for posting this in the wrong section but given the lack of track action during the winter I thought this should be brought to the attention of a wider audience.

As the title suggests the 3rd Christmas Cracker Short Track meeting will take place at the Scunthorpe Raceway this Sunday (start 1pm). Speedway riders Ricky Ashworth, Adam Allott, Benji Compton, Simon Lambert and Rusty Hodgson along with road racing stars John McGuinness (TT Fame), Guy Martin (Ulster GP winner), Steve Plater (Macao GP winner), Ben Wilson and Matt Llewellyn plus Super Moto racers Leighton Haigh and Andy Mitchell will be taking on regular Short Track riders like Peter Boast, Tim Greig, Glyn Pocklington and Victor Bull for the title.

Last year the meeting attracted the biggest crowd to the Scunthorpe Raceway since the track's opening meeting in 2005 and with a dry and fine day forecast for Sunday another bumper turnout is expected.

Last year's meeting provided some excellent racing and this year's line-up suggests it will be no less competitive.

  4. So where does this lad go now ?? Anybody now if hes goin to conference next year? Not to sure how old he is ? Does he go in on a different grade heard that can happen, does this mean he cant guest ??

I thought he had a brilliant style and looks very smoothe, really deserved the win in my opinion, also sarjeant looked smoothe and fast too. Dont know how either of them kept consentration in the run off with the air fence going down, but both seemed to cope. Will both make excellent reserves, and dont think there even 15 yet!!

Any info would be much appriciated, thanks

    Stuart

He can defend his title in 2007 and is also eligible for the CL from June 4th. At the moment all new riders into the CL come in as a grade '1' rider. I think they can ride for any club until he has ridden five times as a grade one. Then he becomes a grade '2' rider and has to be signed by one club. Of course that might change before next season.

  5. Please excuse my ignorance but is this the final standings for the 2007 Championship? I was told that Dan was announced as the final winner and overall champion on text. If so how have I got it wrong? I separated tied riders by their scores in the final but I don't know if that is the correct method. Can anyone enlighten me?

    1. James SARJEANT 17 + 14 = 31

    2. Daniel GREENWOOD 15 + 14 = 29

    3. Brendan JOHNSON 17 + 12 = 29

    4. Kye NORTON 13 + 13 = 26

    5. Shane HAZELDEN 13 + 12 = 25

    6. Richard FRANKLIN 15 + 10 = 25

    7. Danny STONEMAN 9 + 8 = 17

    8. Jack HIRST 12 + 4 = 16

    9. John RESCH 7 + 8 = 15

    10. Scott MEAKINS 6 + 8 = 14

    11. Cameron HOSKINS 10 + 3 = 13

    12. Montana JOWETT 10 + 2 = 12

    13. Chris BINT 5 + 4 = 9

    14. Jason GARRITY 9 + 0 = 9

    15. Jake KNIGHT 0 + 6 = 6

    16. Michael BOVIS 4 + 0 = 4

Whatever the positions I'd like to offer my congratulations to all who made it into the final. I'm a massive fan of the U-15 Championship and 250cc class (which will hopefully develop) but I was diappointed that there was only three rounds this year.

I think the BSPA should ensure there are ten rounds evenly spread over the season and riders take their best five to the final.

  6. Sunday sees the David Nix Memorial Trophy meeting run at the Scunthorpe Raceway. The meeting is usually run by David’s father, Pat, at Kings’ Lynn but the Norfolk Arena isn’t available so will switch to Scunthorpe for 2007. The individual meeting, which this year will raise funds for recently paralysed rider Garry Stead, is in memory of David Nix who tragically lost his life whilst riding for the Kings’ Lynn Conference League side in 2002.

Pat Nix has put together a strong field with Rye House Premier League pairing of Adam Roynon and Luke Bowen set to compete along with regular Conference League heat leaders Simon Lambert and Darren Mallett (Boston), Karl Mason (Weymouth) and Jonathan Bethell (Stoke). Three Scorpions’ riders, Byron Bekker, James Cockle and Scott Richardson, will take part and there will also be two Finnish riders who are due to travel to Britain to ride in the meeting. Tero Aarnio rode for Finland in the World Team Cup this year whilst Joni Keskinen was second in the Finish Under-21 Championship in 2006. One of the favourites in the field is likely to be Mark Thompson who has proven to be one of the most exciting visitors to the Scunthorpe Raceway whilst eager to defend his title is 2006 Champion Nathan Irwin.

Line-up (with two riders still to be confirmed):

    Tero Aarnio (Finland)

    Byron Bekker (Scunthorpe and Berwick)

    Jonathan Bethell (Stoke)

Luke Bowen (Rye House – Premier League)

    James Cockle (Scunthorpe and Sheffield)

    Wayne Dunworth (Boston)

    Martin Emerson (Cleveland)

    Nathan Irwin (Weymouth)

    Simon Lambert (Boston)

    Darren Mallett (Boston)

    Karl Mason (Weymouth)

    Scott Richardson (Scunthorpe)

Adam Roynon (Rye House – Premier League)

    Mark Thompson (Weymouth)

Also due to take part in some demonstration races will be 'The Men in Black" team who will be racing speedway machines from yesteryear. The meeting starts at 3pm. Admission prices are: Adults £9, Concessions £6, Ages 12-15 £4, Under-12s Free with paying adult.

  7. For what it's worth I quite like the tactical rules but they are so unpopular we must change something. Something I thought of a couple of weeks ago which would at least throw away the "second scored more than first" argument is if the team that is dropping behind nominates a heat for ALL riders to score double points.

I'm sure there are other problems with that but it is the widespread dislike that has to be overcome. I used to hate the away number one taking a very easy win in heat 8 but it was done for so long everyone took it for granted. I do think the current rules create stronger teams rather than a top one or two riders so I think we need to try and keep those benefits.

  8. The Lincs FM Scunthorpe Scorpions have a week off from team action but Sunday’s meeting at the Scunthorpe Raceway will be one of the most important meetings for several of the side as they compete against each other and nine visiting riders for three places in the British Under-21 Final.

Whilst several of the Scorpions will be looking to grab one of the three places, the visitors include five Premier League riders whilst the Boston Barracudas’ Simon Lambert is another who knows the quickest way around the Scunthorpe track. Two year’s ago the Newcastle Diamonds’ Jamie Robertson won the meeting from Tommy Allen, William Lawson and former-Scorpion Danny Norton. On Sunday he returns to represent his new club, the Workington Comets, along with his team mate and former Buxton Hitman Charles Wright. From Robertson’s old club is Sean Stoddart whilst Redcar’s Jamie Courtney and Sheffield’s James Cockle will also be looking to progress. The format for the meeting will see the top two scorers after twenty qualifying races advance to the final whilst the third to sixth top scorers will race-off for the remaining two places in the final. From there the top three will progress to the British Under-21 Final, which takes place in two weeks time, Saturday 28th April, at Eastbourne.

Six riders have been seeded to the Eastbourne meeting will all of them riding in the Elite League this season:

    Lewis Bridger (Eastbourne)

    Edward Kennett (Poole)

    Danny King (Peterborough)

    William Lawson (Edinburgh and Wolverhampton)

Ben Wilson (Sheffield and Belle Vue)

James Wright (Workington and Belle Vue)

The first two semi-finals have already been run and last Friday, at Plymouth, Steve Boxall (Rye House), Luke Bowen (Rye House) and Adam Roynon (Rye House and Plymouth) qualified.

The three Rye House riders were joined by another tonight when the second semi-final was run at Weymouth. The three qualifiers were Ben Barker (Stoke), Lee Smart (Birmingham and Weymouth) and Mark Baseby (Sittingbourne).

The fourth-placed rider on Sunday will join Nicki Glanz (Plymouth) and Robert Mear (Rye House) in a run-off at Eastbourne, prior to the Final, to decide the 16th rider. The other two will act as meeting reserves. Five or six riders will progress from the British Under-21 Final through to the World Under-21 Championship rounds whilst the top three will also receive a place in the full British Final due to take place at Wolverhampton on 4th June and to be shown live on Sky Sports.

The full line-up for Sunday’s meeting, which starts at the usual time of 3pm, is:

    1. Kriss Irving (Stoke)

    2 Joe Haines (Scunthorpe)

3 Sean Stoddart (Newcastle & Boston)

    4 Simon Lambert (Boston)

    5 James Cockle (Sheffield)

    6 Gary Beaton (Cleveland)

    7 Richie Dennis (Scunthorpe)

    8 Jamie Robertson (Workington)

    9 Darren Mallett (Boston)

    10 Scott Richardson (Scunthorpe)

11 Josh Auty (Scunthorpe & Redcar)

    12 Charles Wright (Workington)

13 Andrew Tully (Edinburgh & Scunthorpe)

14 Tai Woffinden (Rye House & Scunthorpe)

15 Benji Compton (Berwick & Scunthorpe)

    16 Jamie Courtney (Redcar)

  9. King’s Lynn’s Swedish heat-leader Daniel Nermark has agreed to race in Mr. C’s Final Crusade, the Wayne Carter farewell meeting, which takes place at the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday 1st April.

The 29-year old, who managed a nine-point average with the league winning Stars in 2006, will be racing for the first time at Scunthorpe but his impressive 10.33 home Premier League average shows a liking for fast tracks and he certain to be amongst the pre-meetings favourites.

Others who have already agreed to take part include three who start the season as their club’s top averaged rider in the Premier League. American Ronnie Correy has dropped down from a long career in the Elite League to lead the Edinburgh Monarchs, Andre Compton is the Sheffield Tigers’ top rider whilst Garry Stead is has the highest average in a strong Stoke Potters side. They are joined by Robbie Kessler, Peter Carr, Lee Complin, Derek Sneddon, Jack Hargreaves and Simon Lambert whilst three of the Lincs FM Scunthorpe Scorpions Conference League Championship-winning side, Josh Auty, Richie Dennis and Andrew Tully, are set to pit their skills against their Premier League colleagues.

With three riders still to be finalised the field is certain to be the strongest ever to race at the Scunthorpe Raceway whilst the handicap racing format of the 20-heat meeting will surely produce some fantastic racing in honour of Carter, who was forced to retire from riding after eighteen seasons.

The racing is set to start at 2pm and on top of 20 heats of speedway the celebrations are also set to include sidecar racing and live emu racing. The Lincs FM season kicks off seven days before Mr. C’s Final Crusade, on Sunday 25th March (start time 3pm), when local rivals, the Boston Barracudas bring a strong team, led by Jon Armstrong, Simon Lambert, Darren Mallett and Matthew Wright to race in the first leg of the Lincolnshire Cup.

  10. The last release from the USA Team showed the full schedule and rider line-up:

Tim Gomez named Dream Team Captain

The 2007 USA Dream Team Tour is to be captained by Tim Gomez, a rider who will be making his third Dream Team tour to Britain. Although Gomez is the son of Tour Coordinator Gary Gomez, the choice of captain was made by his fellow official Steve Evans. Gomez senior confirmed “I enjoyed building the team and helped set up the itinerary but when it came to picking the Captain I left that up to Steve Evans”.

Evans commented “Tim has shown us that he can lead a team and ride as a team rider. After his performances in the past 18 months as captain of the Victorville Vikings, and his ride last week alongside statesman Billy Hamill, I decided that he would be the best for the job”.

The new appointed skipper, who is just 18 years old, admitted “This is way cool. I am already on a mission to prove myself this year after my injuries from last year and this will make me even more focused. We have a great team for 2007 and I am proud to be the captain of the team.”

Two more dates have been added to the itinerary whilst the team is now complete. There is a full meeting pencilled in against the Cleveland Bays on Saturday 7th April whilst the team will race in a six-heat meeting at Sheffield on Thursday 12th April. The meeting at Cleveland is subject to the Redcar club receiving planning permission to run on Saturdays in 2007.

    The full schedule is:

Friday 6th April v. Weymouth Wildcats

Saturday 7th April v. Cleveland Bays (provisional)

Sunday 8th April v. Scunthorpe Scorpions

Monday 9th April v. Wolverhampton Predators (6-heat mini meeting after Wolverhampton v. Belle Vue Elite League meeting)

Thursday 12th April v. Sheffield Prowlers (6-heat mini meeting after Sheffield v Workington Premier Trophy meeting)

Friday 13th April v. Plymouth Devils

Sunday 15th April v. Buxton Hitmen

The two riders that have completed the team are 19-year old J.T.Mabry, who finished joint seventh with Tim Gomez in the US Under-21 Final, and 17-year old British rider Scott Campos. Campos, an accomplished Grasstrack rider, has primarily ridden for Boston in the Conference League over the last two seasons and helped the Dream Team on their 2006 tour. Along with Gomez, Mabry and Campos the squad also includes Bryan Yarrow, Neil Facchini, Dale Facchini, Tommy Hedden and Kenny Ingalls.

With the tour virtually finalised the organisers are on the lookout for sponsors who might help with the considerable costs of bringing the team to Britain. Already the Dream Team has secured sponsorship from 2006 backers Barrett Steel but if anyone else is interested in helping they should contact Gary Gomez via e-mail (tmgracing@aol.com).

  11. Today's Scunthorpe Speedway Press Release:

    Wayne Carter to manage opposition

Wayne Carter’s 18-year speedway career as a rider might be over but his farewell meeting at Scunthorpe, Mr. C’s Last Crusade, will not be the end for Carter. Just one week later he will be returning to the Scunthorpe Raceway to pit his wits against the Scorpions as the Team Manager of the USA Dream Team.

Carter will be the Team Manager for most of the USA’s meetings during their two-week tour and is likely to make his management debut the night before coming to Scunthorpe when the Americans ride at Redcar against the Cleveland Bays. However, Carter isn’t planning on opposing the Scorpions and the rest of the season is likely to see him a regular contributor back on the home side of the pits.

Commenting on his appointment Carter confirmed “With retirement being forced up me this is keeping me involved. I’ll be involved down at Scunthorpe but I’m looking forward to this. Last year’s USA team were a good bunch of lads and they are obviously very keen, having paid for the trip themselves. Hopefully I’ll be able to help them with some bike setups”.

  12. From www.scunthorpe-speedway.co.uk

Lee Complin, one of the outstanding British speedway prospects of recent times, will come out of retirement to race in the Wayne Carter farewell meeting at the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday 1st April (start time 2pm). Complin burst onto the scene as a 16-year old with the Sheffield Tigers in 2001 Premier League but at the end of the 2002 season he retired “due to personal reasons” after averaging close to eight in only his second season.

Over the last year Complin has returned to race around speedway tracks, winning the Short Track UK Championship in his very first season, but on Sunday April 1st, Complin, who is still only 22 years old, will race a speedway bike for the time in four and a half years.

Complin will join fifteen other riders as they battle it out in a twenty heat ‘handicap-style’ individual meeting. The meeting, now dubbed Mr. C’s Final Crusade, will see riders race from staggered start positions dependent on where they finished in their previous race. Race winners will start from the back grid, second place finishers further forward, third placed riders further forward still, whilst riders who finish last will start their next race from the tapes. The format is certain to help produce fantastic racing around a track which has become extremely popular with riders since its construction less than three years ago.

Other riders already declared for the meeting are Ronnie Correy, Andre Compton, Robbie Kessler, Garry Stead, Peter Carr, Derek Sneddon, Jack Hargreaves, Simon Lambert and three Scunthorpe Scorpions’ riders Josh Auty, Richie Dennis and Andrew Tully. Four places are left to be filled and announcements will follow over the next week or two.

The Scorpions’ season will open seven days before Mr. C’s Final Crusade with the Boston Barracudas visiting the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday 25th March for the first leg of the Lincolnshire Cup (start time 3pm).

  13. The 2007 USA Dream Team Tour is to be captained by Tim Gomez, a rider who will be making his third Dream Team tour to Britain. The full schedule is:

  15. Scunthorpe Speedway Press Release:

Scunthorpe Scorpion’ Tai Woffinden claimed an impressive fourth in the Ron Johnson Memorial Meeting at Western Australia’s Pinjar Park on Saturday night. The quality field included Steve Johnston (Oxford), Chris Holder (Isle of Wight), Jason Doyle (Poole), Tom Hedley (Newport) and Trevor Harding (King’s Lynn) who all competed in last month’s Australian Championships along with former British League riders Frank Smart, Mitch Shirra and David Cheshire.

Woffinden rode well to win three of his qualifying races and claim twelve points and a spot in the semi-final. That race saw him finish second behind Frank Smart to make the Grand Final by defeating Tom Hedley and Trevor Harding. The Final pitted ‘Wuffy’ against Steve Johnston (3rd in Australian Championship) and Jason Doyle (6th) along with Smart, the ex-Newport, Swindon and Exeter heat-leader. Doyle led Johnston from the tapes with Woffinden and Smart close behind. In a race where the proverbial blanket could have covered all riders for much of the race it was Johnston who edged home, closely followed by Doyle, Smart and Woffinden.

Afterwards Woffinden’s delighted father, Rob, claimed “The Grand final was amazing, unbelievably close racing. Fourth place for Tai was a mega result in the strongest field in Western Australia for maybe 25 years”.

That was Woffinden’s last meeting in Australia before he returns to Britain to race for the Scorpions, and Rye House in the Premier League, at the beginning of March.

  16. From the Scunthorpe website:

Easter Sunday will see a team of American speedway riders take on the Scunthorpe Scorpions at the Scunthorpe Raceway. The Americans have a long history of world class riders and the two week tour will see some of the outstanding speedway talent in North America showcase their talents with many of the riders hoping to gain a team place in Britain. Riders so far signed for the team are Dale Facchini, Neil Facchini, Tim Gomez and Kenny Ingalls in trip that already includes meetings at Weymouth (6th April), Plymouth (13th) and Buxton (15th) in other matches.

The team will also take part in a 6-heat second half match against the Wolverhampton Wolf Cubs on 9th April whilst further fixtures are set to be added to the itinerary. The trip is the third of its kind, with the first taking place in 2005. That tour brought Chris Kerr to these shores for the first time and he was quickly snapped up by Cleveland to ride in their Premier League team whilst last year Buck Blair in particular attracted a lot of attention.

The Dream Team made their debut at Scunthorpe last season and although the Scorpions won the meeting the Americans were probably the most popular and entertaining visitors of the season.

  17. Wayne Carter, the rider who captained the Scunthorpe Scorpions until injury cruelly ended his 18-year speedway riding career, will hold his Farewell meeting at the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday April 1st.

Wayne, who rode for Wolverhampton, Mildenhall, Middlesbrough, Belle Vue, Isle of Wight, Peterborough, Bradford, Berwick, Newcastle, Coventry, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Swindon before joining the Scorpions two years ago, is holding an individual meeting with a difference and the line-up is sure to be the strongest to have been seen at the Scunthorpe Raceway.

The meeting format will be along the lines of Wolverhampton’s Olympique meeting where 16 riders race over 20 heats but after the first four races the riders will be handicapped dependent on where they finished in their last race. If a rider finished first he will start fifteen metres back in his next race, a second place means starting from the ten metre mark, third place means five metres back whilst finishing last will allow the rider to start from the tapes in his next race. The format is bound to provide plenty of passing as the best riders will constantly have to fight their way through the field on a track that has always provided plenty of racing lines.

Riders who have already agreed to take part include Ronnie Correy, Andre Compton, Peter Carr, Chris Neath, Robbie Kessler, Garry Stead, Derek Sneddon, Josh Auty, Richie Dennis and Andrew Tully.

American Ronnie Correy rode for several seasons with Wayne at Wolverhampton, including 1991 when the pair were part of the league title winning side. He has just left the Elite league club to become the new number one at Edinburgh.

Peter Carr and Derek Sneddon, along with Wayne, were part of the 2003 Premier League title winning team at Edinburgh whilst Andre Compton (Sheffield) is currently one of the top riders in that league. Chris Neath (Rye House), Robbie Kessler (Stoke) and Garry Stead (Stoke) are also Premier League heat-leaders whilst the top Scunthorpe riders will be wanting to show the visitors that they know the fastest route around their home circuit.

Wayne is still hoping to obtain league approval to add a couple of Elite League riders to the field whilst Tai Woffinden has been contacted in Australia in the hope that he too will be able to compete. More details will follow in the days to come.

  18. Thanks to everyone involved in providing the world with the scores. Does anyone know where I can find the line-ups for rounds 3-5. I've a spreadsheet I can quickly update whilst I'm at work but it's heats five to seven before it becomes apparent which rider is riding at each number. If anyone want a copy of the spreadsheet just e-mail me at richardh1967@ntlworld.com
