  1. Following tonights Premier League rain-off and with the forecast of more rain tomorrow it has been decided that the risk of a rain-off tomorrow is too high. With that in mind, and to avoid most people travelling, we have decided to not run.

The next amateur meetings are the annual clashes with the Southern Track riders at King's Lynn on 1st July and at Scunthorpe on 8th July. Teams will be run at Open, Support and Novice standard and anyone who would like to ride should contact me via email (richard@scunthorpespeedway.com) or on 07832-402167.

  2. Due to popular demand this will be a team meeting. Will probably split each of the three adult classes (Open, Support and Novice) into two pretty even sides. May try and also make it a North v South thing to add a little spice. This is ahead of the annual team meetings against Southern Track Riders (and hopefully Stoke) on July 1st at Kings Lynn and at Scunthorpe on July 8th

There will be three youth classes (125cc, 250cc and 500cc) which will form part of the Summer Championship (to replace the last round when there was a clash with the British Youth Championship). Interested riders should text or call me on 07832-402167 if they prefer.

Already we have nearly thirty bookings. Early bookings preferred but will do what I can to accommodate late entries until Friday night.

    Bookings so far:

    Open Class:

Tommy Fenwick David Lidgett Andrew Blackburn David Holt Gary O'Hare Arron Mogridge Steven Jones Jamie Moohan Sean Mason Adam Kenyon Daniel Phillips Sam Woods

    Support Class:

Sam Darroch Simon Pearce Martin Pearce Lee Springthorpe Paul Quarterman John Markham Paul Chester

    Novice Class:

Derek Holt Ivan Howarth Bradley Seal Edward Sturt Greg Sutton

    Youth 250

Brad Andrews Dan Miles Bradley Seal

    Youth 125

    Kean Dicken

    Jamie Halder

  3. If there are any parents who would like their son or daughter to be mascot for the night for the Scunthorpe Scorpions then please contact me via email (richard@scunthorpespeedway.com) or on 07832-402167.

They will need a motorbike, but not necessarily a speedway bike, and around fifteen minutes before tapes up they will be able to have a four laps on track. Then they will be allowed to lead the teams out on parade before watching the meeting from the pits if they so desire.

Should the Scorpions win then the mascot will be able to go out with the team on a couple of victory laps of honour.

All this will be done in a Scorpions race jacket and is free of charge for them plus up to two adults and one other child.

    Naturally spaces are limited.

  4. Jones wins classic final

Steven Jones is looking for a National League place and if this meeting was anything to go by he shouldn’t have to wait long. From beginning to end the Open Class looked like being a three way fight for top spot and when Jones trailed former pro Gary O’Hare and King’s Lynn’s Jake Knight on a slick track in the final it looked like he would have to settle for third place. However, he showed a lot of skill, determination and bravery to eventually round both riders in what was a fantastic finale to the 68th amateur meeting at Scunthorpe Speedway.

With 48-year old O’Hare looking as classy as ever it was only on the last lap that Jones passed him and afterwards organiser and Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions’ Team Manager Richard Hollingsworth paid tribute to the veteran. “We are very lucky that Gary enjoys coming here so much because it means that even the best riders have someone to race against and as soon as one half-decent rider comes along it attracts others so along with the three finishers on the podium we had another former Premier League rider in Henning Loof along with a group of others who were coming along hoping to pick up a scalp or at least endeavour to get closer to the leading contenders”.

In the Support Class there was another former Premier League rider in Rob Finlow. An administration error prevented him from lining up in the Open Class but he was primarily testing an engine (which eventually failed) and it was his first speedway meeting since nearly losing his foot in a 2003 crash. Before his engine failed he looked increasing quick and would undoubtedly have figured at the top of the Open Class but in the end it Martin Pearce who won after a re-run of the final. His brother dislocated his shoulder in the first running and, after being unfit to take his place in the re-run had to be content with third place behind Martin Wrathall, the elder brother of the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints team captain, Adam.

The Novice Class saw Nathan Clare return after a lengthy absence and the sixteen-year old showed he has plenty of talent by claiming victory from Wayne Gosling and Kev Keay. Sadly, just like Simon Bence in the Support Class, Marty Rathbone fell whilst leading the final.

With the British Youth Championship running at Mildenhall there was just two youngsters getting some track time with Brad Seal (Youth 250) and Tom Cotton (Youth 125) going through their paces.

The next meeting is on Saturday 16th June and will be a team meeting. However, the youth classes will have the opportunity to run their second championship round. Places can be booked contacting Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167.

  5. Hi there. You will be very welcome at Scunthorpe. We run training schools, practices and amateur meetings whilst Barry and his Myfirstskid team also run plenty of events at our track. Wayne Carter, our training instructor, hasn't got a training school on the main track until July now so I'd recommend contacting Barry and coming to their day next Saturday and you could even stay over and put some of the lessons into practice and have a ride in the following day's amateur meeting.

There are three adult classes so start in the novices and see how you get on. Chances are that with your MX background you might quickly advance into the middle (Support) Class. If you have any questions on equipment, setup or anything else feel free to call me on 07832-402167. If I can't help then there will be others who can help.

And of course, 20 isn't too late at all. Richie Worrall was nearly 19 when switching from MX and is now scoring big in the Elite League.

    Cheers,

    Richard

  7. Scunthorpe Speedway's 68th amateur meeting will take place on Sunday 13th May (1pm first race).

There are classes for all standards from raw novice to Premier League reserve whilst there are three youth classes which run if there are entrants. Due to the unavailabililty of another date this meeting does clash with a British Youth Championship but if any youth riders want to take part then we will run the classes. We just won't make the youth classes part of their Summer Championship (whilst the adult classes will be).

Riders can book a place or ask further questions by e-mailing me (richard@scunthorpespeedway.com), contacting me on Facebook (facebook.com/rh1967), or texting/calling 07832-402167. If you call and I am unavailable (e.g. work) please leave a message and I will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For anyone who isn't aware our meetings provide at least five programmed rides and EVERYONE GETS TO RIDE IN A FINAL. With no youth classes there will be at least six rides (five qualifiers and one final) programmed for everyone.

There are trophies for the top three in each class and naturally we have a paramedic, first aiders and ambulance in attendance. One of the stadium cafes are always in operation and we have RM Race Spares (07403-334582) in attendance.

Riders do not need new silencers or mudguards and can ride on day licenses (with no additional charge).

Positions in all classes will be decided in the finals with every rider qualifying for one. THE WINNER OF EACH FINAL ADVANCES TO THE NEXT. (e.g. Winner of the 'E' Final advances to the 'D' Final etc. etc.).

The Open Class usually sees National League standard riders taking part along with those close to break into that league whilst the Novice Class includes riders from complete beginners to those who can usually get a full slide on. The Support Class is now seen as an intermediate class where riders can challenge themselves against better riders without making the full step up to the Open Class.

Summer Championship points are scored in the following manner: 16 points for 1st, 15 for 2nd etc down to 1 point for 16th (although that would be increased for all rounds if we had more than 16 riders for a class on one day). At the moment we are expecting five of the summer dates to be for the Summer Championship and riders will be able to drop one round for the championship so if all five rounds run then top four will count. If only four rounds run then it will be top three etc. etc. However, only riders who compete in the maximum number of rounds (four out of five or three out of four etc. will be eligible for championship trophies)

Helmet colours are required but can be borrowed (please give advance notice if possible) whilst dirt deflectors are compulsory on all speedway bikes except in the Novice and Youth 125s classes. If anyone has any questions then please just let me know.

    The Summer Dates are:

    Sunday 22nd April

    Sunday 13th May

Saturday 16th June (probably a team meeting)

Sunday 8th July (team meeting with Southern Track Riders and probably Stoke)

    Sunday 5th August

    Sunday 9th September

    Sunday 7th October

    The first 11 bookings are:

    Open Class

    Gary O'Hare

    Rikki Mullins

    Arron Mogridge

    Support Class

    Trevor Bebbington

    Martin Pearce

    Simon Pearce

    Novice Class

    Wayne Gosling

    Greg Gosling

    Gary Krelle

    Lee Baldwin

    Lee Coates

  8. Fantastic effort by Richard, Anne, Stuart, Rob, track staff and everyone else involved at Scunthorpe Speedway today to get the meeting on and 50 heats run. Track might have been a bit heavy and the finals washed out but it would have been much easier for the organisers to just give it up at 13:00. Thank you from the K-P's and I am sure from all the other riders for your endeavours, great day in the end, well done!

Thank you for your kind words GKP!

I'm afraid there was a correction to the standings on Monday which needs to be posted here. I'm afraid I mis-read one of Wayne Gosling's winning times and it was in fact Kev Keay who claimed top sport in the Novice Class. Apologies to Wayne for that mistake.

The Novice Class should have read:

Qualifying scores: Kevin Keay 15, Wayne Gosling 15, Mick Keeling 12, Marty Rathbone 11, Ivan Howarth 9, Greg Gosling 7, Hannah Kirtley-Paine 6, Derek Holt 6, Anthony Mulrine 4 (4 rides).

  10. Showers we can cope with (and they can be a positive if not too heavy); persistent rain is more of a problem. We will be looking at the rainfall radars tomorrow but eight years experience says it is way too early to worry too much about them now and we

I will produce the programme tomorrow and look at the forecast tomorrow afternoon/evening before working out what chance we have.

For now I'd like to remind riders in all leagues that they are welcome to compete in our meetings. We won't give trophies to PL riders with a five-point plus average but they are welcome to use our meetings for testing. Today I heard an NL rider had suggested that he wouldn't be allowed to race. On the contrary if you look down the roll of honour you will see plenty of PL standard riders and in recent times we have had the Worrall twins and Gary Irving take part and not only are they PL level and well acquainted with the EWR track but thay didn't always win.

So if anyone wants to join in on Sunday (be it to race or just get some track time) then call/text me on 07832-402167 on Saturday (preferably before 6pm, but right up to 10pm if you decide late) and I'll programme you in. There will be four or maybe even five qualifying riders before everyone gets a final.

Of course we are also still accepting entrants to the youth, support and novice classes too.

    Lets have some speedway racing.

    Richard

  12. After six hugely successful winter meetings the 22nd April marks the beginning of the summer amateur meetings at Scunthorpe. It is the 67th meeting at Scunthorpe since they started in January 2008 and also is the first round of the fifth summer championship.

There are classes for all standards from raw novice to Premier League reserve whilst there are three youth classes which run if there are entrants. The Youth 125 class has been very popular and with some of the riders moving into the 250 class we expect that to blossom in 2012. As the Youth 500 class is almost exclusively dealing with 14-year olds there aren't many participants but if there are riders who want to ride then we will put on the class; such is our commitment to British youth development.

Riders can ride in as many or as few meetings as they like and in particular I am taking bookings for the 22nd April.

Please e-mail me (richard@scunthorpespeedway.com), message me on Facebook (facebook.com/rh1967), text or call 07832-402167 to reserve a place or if you have any questions. If you call and I am unavailable (e.g. work) please leave a message and I will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

  16. Unfortunately, just a week after announcing the dates for thirteen amateur meetings there is a need to amend the dates of three. Two of the changes are because of clashes with the British Youth Championship.

    The amended dates are:

Sunday 22nd April replaces Sunday 15th April

Saturday 16th June replaces Sunday 17th June

Saturday 8th September replaces Sunday 9th September

Simon - I do work closely with Linda at STR to try and avoid clashes but we both have lots of restrictions and this year wwe seemed to have more problems. We have a plan in place to, hopefully, reduce the clashes in 2013.
