  1. Jason was good, and so was David Tapp, MUCH better than listening to the mouth that is Pearson. Never made a mistake either.

Aside from having Troy Butler in a race? ;) Got to admit I did enjoy his commentary though. Thought it was a good GP actually, especially as there wasn't much to play for. Good track with plenty of lines, and some decent racing. Masters clearly not au fait with GP racing yet, but gave a good account of himself on track. And really good to see some of the "greats" in attendance, especially Leigh Adams.

  2. Interest in league racing has waned! Why, I wonder?

Back in TGOD...Teams only lacked a rider through injury - real ones, too! - not because they were riding somewhere else in Europe, or in another UK league

Looking back, with one bike strapped on to the back of the car, the riders were virtually all semi-pro's - even Little Boy Blue - yet were provided with a full calendar of racing throughout the week throughout the UK

Perhaps we really should look back for answers on how to go forward

Largely because my clubs kept closing (nothing to do with me, honest!) and my favourite riders left through injury or retirement.

The past riders only rode a couple of times a week though, and supplemented their income in other ways. Nowadays speedway is a full time profession, and a rider can make a living from the sport – so you could consider that a progression for speedway, perhaps?

CHR – the newbies You’d hope the promoters would know the difference.

  3. but ONLY big names will put bums on seats

Playing devil's advocate, aren't we being told that promoters are trying to bring new supporters in through the gates? I'd guess most of them wouldn't know a Sayfutdinov from a (insert your own choice of lesser rider here as I'm not going to pick on anyone!)?

  4. The rest of us want good racing......

True. I have to admit my interest in the leagues has waned over the years, and whilst I do still follow the sport I only tend to have the televised meetings on in the background.

I switched on the play off final without much expectation, but for the first time in I don't know how long, I watched the first leg, from start to finish, without being distracted by other things. More than that, I was actually looking forward to the second leg, and made a point of watching. Craig Cook's determination and interaction with the crowd left me hoping that Belle Vue would win, but even I was pleased for Poole in the end.

What made the difference for me was that each and every one of the riders put 100% in to those meetings, which made for some great racing. If we could get that spirit and sense of excitement for every league meeting I'm sure crowds would start rising again, and there would be less complaints about the cost, regardless of who the riders are in the line ups.

  5. Bomber is doing well tonight and let's be fair that is a tad unusual. His domestic season of racing has just finished ---- surely it's no coincidence that he's doing well in the GP --- he's rested and full of concentration.?

Feel I should stick up for the lad here. Not only is he one of the most utilised riders for the guest facility, but he's also one of only a handful who rides in 3 leagues, for his team in the SWC, and also in the SGP. I think you'd be hard pushed to find a busier rider, AND he still managed to qualify for the GPs next year, but even that hasn't stopped him giving his all in the series, despite not needing the points. That's pretty impressive in my book. :)
