Must admit I have enjoyed the differing opinions on this thread..

Makes the forum what it should be..

    Open and honest debate..

And having read so much of what has been said and discussed around what a nightmare Rob Grant found himself in, then I really hope the fans of Newcastle all turn out to support the club this weekend..

It would be great if all those 'flouting fans' who go now and again, but still closely follow the club, all made the deliberate effort to all attend this weekend..

Be a good boost for the Promotion I would think...

NB. As an aside, I do think that the 'pay at the gate', 'stand where you want' message needs to pushed massively by all the tracks on their social media pages. Still lots of confusion out there from lots of people as to "the covid rules", so Speedway should be 100% hammering home that message..

The nightmare that Rob Grant found himself in is extremely unfortunate. What is also unfortunate is the people who think that they can post on his behalf. If Rob has ok’d that then fine, it’s his business to destroy. I would like to think that he would be mortified. slagging on social media officially or by proxy is not the way to go. The past cannot be changed.

The then owner of Brough Park went bust in about July 97 which was our first year. We were allowed to complete the season under the guidance of KPMG the receivers. it was offered for sale on the market and 3 potential buyers were identified. All three guaranteed to continue with speedway if they bought Brough Park, and we advised the BSPA we were OK for 1998. We are put in the Cups and included in the Premier League, and in mid January the sale was completed with Alan Roberts Bookmakers and we confirmed were were running. Obviously we owned Jesper from 1997 but we needed two more heat leaders. Brent Werner, a Yank, was available and lived in England, and then we heard that Nicky was looking for a teamplace but everyone  else was fixed up. He knew of Jesper and he was easily persuaded to join a fellow Dane in his first year racing in this country. He picked up all of his brother Ronni's contacts, so therefore had lodgings with a guy in Peterborough. He stayed overnight with Jesper when he had away and home meetings up North.

To pick up on a point Wolfie456 was alluding to I think. With him staying down south he missed out on all the local functions and meeting the fans away from the track. He has admitted to me that was a mistake, and he wished he had connected with our fans by being with us at such events. However he has on every available occasion since, made up for that and at Cardiff he never forgets his Geordie fans and loves to chat and spend time with them. We stayed in the BSPA hotel once, the Marriott I think, and he  was overwhelmed to see all my family remembering all their names except our Lee's boyfriend (now fiance) who was an addition to the family then. He knows he missed out with the fans, and even missed out with the Wolves fans despite the journey home was shorter. He was a bit more withdrawn then, and preferred to head on home straightaway after the meeting with a long journey to get home..

Thanks for that Dave, I’m a huge fan of Nikki, he is the Michael Schumacher of speedway.

Sad to see the ban for Nicki. I am a self acclaimed Nicki's no1 fan having signed him in 1998 for the Diamonds, and selling him to Wolverhampton the following year. When you get close and understand him, he is the ultimate sportsman. and will take every opportunity to get the win. Yes, he goes overboard sometimes but, like in the cases with Zagar, it is  a carryover from a previous clash when Nicki had got done.  These spats go on, and continue for sometime years, and refs know that and as long as there is no injuries and it's just being competitive, the ref will allow it and the majority of fans will see what they have expected and paid for. There are others on this Forum, also close to him, and they will tell you what a great guy he is when he has gained your trust. He is intelligent, mannerly,  respectful and  has you as a contact and a friend for life. I am lucky in having worked with him, so I admit I can be biased when I see his crashes, and I have to step back and have a rethink sometimes. Refs do get it wrong of course, as in the case in 1998 at Stoke for the first time, when Nicki overtook Paul Pickering on the second bend and Paul somehow dropped his bike. The ref then excluded Nicki despite all the protests. At the end of the meeting, the ref approached our Team manager George English and apologised for his error saying he thought it was Ronni Pedersen. :o Just shows that some refs can also carry the grudge, not just fellow riders.

How did you come across Nikki?

Today I left the Plymouth club, I cannot find my place in this club. I'm alone in England, with no family, and I don't get any help from this club I have to do everything on my own :

I wash my bikes, I prepare them, I do kilometers (11300 on 2 month) to cross the country and all that without a single helping hand. I am alone in everyday life and everyday life in a foreign country is not easy, especially when you are young and without family.

For example, several times I found myself stranded at airports because no one came to pick me up. Today I have to work on my departure but if no one gives me the opportunity it is not possible ... I take this opportunity to thank the few people who made the effort to help me.

I am a fighter and a volunteer Today, all I want is to evolve and learn how to be the best on the slopes.

I’m young and hopeful I need to practice my sport, I need to train every day to be on top.

Unfortunately, it turns out that is not possible with the Plymouth club … It is therefore time for me to leave and find another club, more human and supportive, where I can express my potential to the maximum.

The adventure is not over, stay tuned

Your support is helping me a lot.

    Steven

Obviously wants his arse wiped for him as well. Spoilt brat comes to mind.

riders numbers come from their early days in motorsport . youth events .

i could be wrong , but i think cookie had number 11 in his early days of motocross . then he added an extra 1 to make 111 . i think it is something to do with an event in the family . but not too sure  . when my brother was doing mx he had numbers 4, 32 kenny roberts number as he was riding yamaha at the time . there was one other number he used , but i cannot think what it was  .

i think he rode in four different clubs around the north and sometimes his number was already taken by another rider in his class .. hence the change .

ahh , the good old days .

the number 69 or 96 is a good un as it reads the same upside down when you have an off !

Interesting bit of info but I’m not sure that is the reason it is picked..........;)

  6. Media side of the promotion is shocking, I have said that before. Press releases are put on Facebook and third parties post the contents here. The website is not used? The website started off promising but is now crap with dead links etc. I would put my life on the line and say the vast majority of the fan base of the club do not use Facebook or read here. The promotion of the club is rubbishe.

the bug (covid) will return big style and fans/supporters will get cheesed off .

normal rallying has all but finished . only big events run. mx are finding it hard to find land for tracks . road rallying  is finished . speedway is pricing itself out of joe bloggs pocket .

there will not be young uns to carry on the support for most forms of sport . councils grabbing council tax . when you have paid your mortgage , you will still another one to donate money to like it or not .

so we all ask for extra money at our place of work cos we are find it hard to live and that puts the price of their product up  . big circle !

lots of workers are in working poverty . there is no way out . yep , speedway is all but gone . look @ the premier teams line ups and compare them to the championship line ups . almost the same  .but life goes on , sort of .

just my way of looking at things .  right or left !

Ok, thanks, I’ll write that down.......

My Dad died of a brain tumour three weeks ago so forgive me for realising that life is too short to spend my time responding to any of your 'banter' on here.

Happy to have constructive discussions about how we help each other with the speedway track.  Otherwise I'll be hitting the ignore button.

Sorry for your loss but this was one fight you were never going to win.

Going to now 'ignore' the last four posters.  I replied to someone's comment with an honest answer about whether I ate meat (I do not and no, I don't support any sport that involves cruelty to animals) and get rude messages back as a result.  I understand that my stance on eating meat will make some people feel uncomfortable.  I used to feel the same.  We often get accused of hypocrisy by people saying that we oppose greyhound racing but still eat meat.  Can't win with that one!  If I said I ate meat, I'd get accused of hypocrisy.  When I say I don't, I get derided for that and get told that's pathetic.

You can join Orion in saying what you like about me now as I won't see it (happily).

I came on here to support the speedway team and to see if our groups could work together.  I appreciate those who have engaged with me in a constructive way and will just use the ignore button on the unpleasant ones.  Life is too short.

You lot are all the same but love the odd sausage eh?

Well we’ve got an announcement about an announcement on the Scorpions Twitter ! Just hope it’s about a rider and not we are pleased to secure Henderson insurance as the title sponsor for another year !!

An announcement that Henderson insurance is a sponsor again in the current climate would be a massive positive. Without sponsorship then maybe no speedway.

Would be a first for any Government to GIVE anything to speedway racing.

Even in its heyday all they did was impose punitive entertainment tax on the sport that nearly put it out of existence.

On a hypothetical note....can you imagine  what BSPL would do if they received anything from this fund ?

Under declaring crowds, not declaring correct vat etc etc, I’m sure the promoters were not as bad off as they made out.

This part is strange, as over here in Aussie at the start, most shops as per government rules didn’t want cash, only card transactions..

There will be NO CARD payment facilities within the Stadium (Covid Regulations) Cash only in Bars / Food with exact changepreferred

I think it could be better worded, they obviously don’t have contactless facilities. Maybe the machine they have is only keypad and they don’t want anyone touching it. But anyway the advice in the UK is to use contactless payment whenever possible.
