  1. Under the old system you could have five wins and an engine failure in the semi and end with 15 points In this system you could have five wins and an engine failure and end with nine points. This system is far more likely to punish you for one bad ride
  2. 1986, when he was unbeaten AWAY in the BL
  3. Tbf, he was competing against the likes of Briggs and Olsen, who were pretty decent around hyde rd, and PC who shared the home track advantage. Maybe also Ivan had such focus on the world title, that he was not at his peak in the weeks after the "big one"
  4. Being lazy here, but did you check their h2h record in world finals?

    'They Retired Too Soon'

Was it ever concluded as to whether Robert72 was Rob Lightfoot?

    King's Lynn Stars 2020

Apart from rugby, cricket, rugby league, football...not in every country, but many...very few sports don't have a play off of some kind to determine the champion.

    Dave Jessup Book

Just read it on Kindle. Slightly disappointing read imo, I'd say it is probably for DJ fans only - lots of year by year detail, but little real insight into the person rather than the rider, and no real analysis of what caused the regular engine failures at key moments. One of the duller speedway biographies.

    1985 World Final

What about the 1982 intercontinental final when he and ole pulled over to let Bo Petersen past? Of course Shaun was involved in THAT race in the 82 overseas final. And I recall Sam letting Hancock through in an early 90s overseas final. So, I'm not sure there is any rider you could state would never do it. BUT I'm convinced nothing was amiss here. Why would Shaun throw it when a win (with Eric 3rd) would see him with a run off for 3rd? I think the myth about this race is thst Moran and King were team riding - i believe they were racing each other, and as others have said, King tried to clamp down on Shaun, wasn't quick enough and Eric came round the outside. Not the only time he won a world final in 85 bombing round the outside...or are people going to say they heard in the Halifax pits that KC was paid off to let Eric past in the world pairs

Until you get to the very last chapter, when the band will come adrift and the whole thing fall apart...

Peter Adams in the Star last week

Did the aces name an 8,9,10,11? I remember Beaton and Hunter making a very limited number of appearance, and young Andy at the end of the season (can't imagine he would have been named at the start of the season). Pretty sure no others rode, but were any others named?

Peter Adams in the Star last week

Not sure that's correct. He may only have been used after Penhall retired, but not as a replacement for Penhall...pretty sure they used R/R to cover Bruce and Wiggy at reserve in their final match at hyde rd (not certain if that was in the BL or the KO cup)

Jan Verner and Ian Gledhill also rode at reserve.

    Quick Update...

Have to agree. By far my favourite threads are those on years gone by, reminiscing/debating about favourite speedway eras (80s for me) and the great- and not so great- riders from those times.

    Quick Update...

If a lot of people call out one person for trolling or posting repeated nonsense, that is not bullying.

    Quick Update...

That's a shame OFF, always enjoyed your contributions, especially in the year's gone by topics.

    Quick Update...

This is out of line. By implication you are stating that Chunky was a bully. That is bollocks. Lots of people had issues with John because of the crap he posted. This includes some of the most respected and mild mannered posters on the forum. Everyone agrees he had the knowledge to offer a huge amount to the forum - just a shame the nonsense posts so heavily outweighed the interesting and informative ones.
  17. I think the circumstances set out in Tragedy indicate at least a degree of pre meditation.

On a side note- is the 96 challenge available to watch online?

    GP Challenge 1996

I think that's correct arnieg. The wiki article i read mentioned 13 from the Scandinavian final (8 original qualifiers + 5 "extra"). Then presumably Riss/Furlanetto getting a chance due to rider unavailability

    GP Challenge 1996

I think it is linked to the fact that of all bar three riders from the overseas final were disqualified. Furlanetto is mentioned (wiki) as coming into the lineup to replace an injured Mark Lemon. I presume Riss came in to replace on of the 13(!) "qualifiers" from the Scandinavian final.

    Last ever Hyde Road meeting

Wow, that brought back memories. Thanks for posting!
  24. I have a feeling there was a massive swing BV v Wolves in 87. Aces putting on close to 60 in one clash and then losing in the next. Will check later.
