OUT of curiosity... when were those harder (economically) times?
In the 1950's when tracks were shutting down due to poor crowds of less than 5,000 to 10,000. In 1959 there were only 9 Teams in the National League & 5 in the Southern League.

What a silly statement!!!!!!
If the Elite League (top league) wasn't there, the premier league (2nd league) would then be the top league.....!!!!!
Yes

Why would Sky want to keep showing Elite League Speedway. In the whole of the Elite League in June & July there where only 5 meetings (out of 46) with both Teams having their own 1-7 racing.
June
Matches 22
Matches with teams own 7 riders 2 (Aces v Robins & Brummies v Aces)
RR 27, Guests 14, Guest reserves 22.
Worst culprits Poole – Aces v Pirates RR, Guests 2, Guest Reserve 1
Swindon – Bees v Robins RR, Guests 3, Guest Reserve 1
Poole – Eagles v Poole RR, Guests 2, Guest Reserve 2
July
Matches 24
Matches with teams own 7 riders 3 (Aces v Robins, Eagles v Brummies & Panthers v Brummies)
RR 24, Guests 15, Guest reserves 11.
Worst culprits Wolves – Pirates v Wolves RR, Guests 2, Guest Reserve 1
Aces – Robins v Aces RR, Guests 1, Guest Reserve 1
Is it any wonder that Speedway is not taken seriously by the Media

The Elite League next year? Lets not bicker about the Leagues name, their will be a top level UK League next year, but which teams will be in it? Which teams can actually afford to run in it? What size will it be? Surely these are the important questions, not the Leagues name......??
For now, lets call it;
LEAGUE 1 (top division quality wise in UK)
To work best a league needs an even number of teams, 8, 10, 12 etc...
Why does it have to be 7 rider teams? Why not 6 rider teams? 2 ht leaders, 2 second strings and 2 reserves, that would just about get rid of double up riders, is that a point to start at perhaps?
It was tried in 1997 & was quickly dropped the following year.

Been thinking of ways to get rid of Guests & RR( I know it hurts). Put all the riders into a pool( not full of water ). Each Team Manager & Promoter at the beginning of the season decides what averages they would like to use for their 1 to 7 e.g. No 1 - 9.58 No 2 - 8.20 down to No. 7 to meet the points limit. Then say 2 weeks before a meeting they pick riders which have averages on or below this from the pool. Can only use the same rider 5 time at home & 5 times away per season. No guests no RR. Daft isn’t it the whole pool of riders is your team.

Throw the rule book away!!
Preferably aimed at the BSPA.

Ivan Mauger 1957/58 Wimbledon rubbish then reappears in 1963 onwards

But - NOT SUNDERLAND!!
But if they did you could Boldon them Over.

As opposed to the defeat to Dudley where the home side lost it rather than the visitors winning it, Stoke were always the better team and deserved their win on the day. It would have been interesting to have seen Stoke's declared 1-7 in action as there may have been a different result.
Good to see that Mr Vasey hasn't lost his comedic tendancies as he was jumping up and down as Ben Morley beat Wooley & Williamson in Heat 8!!!
Wouldn’t have got 7+1 from missing rider Neil.
-
I have to say that was a surprise at Buxton. Buxton 41 Stoke 49well done to all the team & a special well done to Guest Ben Morley.
-
Problem is - I don't know them to speak to in order that I might canvass their views.
There’s 5 riding for Newcastle (well 4 + RR for the other) on Sunday but none riding for Leicester .
-
I am talking about as a Full Time Team Member - NOT a Part Time Double Upper.
TWK there are 5 Elite only riders, 10 D/U & 25 Premier League only?

Do we REALLY want Speedway to be part of the Olympics?
I wouldn't want it to become involved with an outfit that is more corrupt than the European Union - and by golly that's saying something.
But where would we find a team to represent GB? We cant find 4 for a 4 team tournament.

-
So WHY don't WE do it?
Because the BSPA have got no Balls.
Not slagging off anyone just pointed out why it's has it's name ..but yet after explaining it you come up with the childish and silly so called El jibe again ... why people get so hung up on a name that just explains it the top division in terms of team strength in the uk is most odd ...
Whose getting hung up on a Name.

I think they are acceptable. They are not powered by an engine and need a lot of human guidance to be involved. A motorised vehicle is a different thing - as would be Olympic power boat racing.
Yes but they need a lot of wind . So should use the BSPA.

Horses aren't human

The Elite league name Would pass with flyingl colours unlike the Premier league name .
But how can it be the Elite of the Elite When it has the premier League riders who are supposedly not the Elite of the Elite.

You’ve just had another meeting tonight to show what a crap rule it is. 10 points up and 2 race later you are losing.

Yes - go up and have a word. That is the only Feedback channel of which I am aware.
Then they will tell you not to bother coming again. Which has been known to happen.

I think you're missing the point. If, as someone suggested, there should be 40 British riders in the Elite League, then pretty much all the British riders in the Premier League would have to ride in the Elite League.
Or scrap the Elite League as against Trade Description Act.

Yes - but the British Leagues are so full of Foreigners that those BRITISH Premier League Riders do NOT get a chance in the Elite League to show what they can do. That is really my point. A Premier League Rider (British) would develop far quicker riding in a higher League. Only a limited number can do that these days because of the Foreigners.
This argument may be academic IF there is only one League next Season.
Just posted this on another topic page but seems relevant to your quote.
Bit difficult to answer as there are only about 42 British riders racing in the Elite & Premier Leagues. Out of a total of 161 riders.

Out of interest, which 40 British riders would you like to see in the Elite League?

Yes, Premier League is sub standard. If it wasn't then there would be no such thing as an Elite League.
This isn't to say that Premier League isn't a wonderful thing for the sport, it's simply that with money being tighter and wages not traveling as far each month consumers have to make a choice whether or not they want to spend their disposable income on speedway. For the fans that do choose to spend their money on speedway they expect a premium product. There is nothing wrong with that consumers expecting more for their money.

But if there wasn’t for 23 riders from the Premier league riders doubling up in the Elite League ( 33%) there be no Elite League.
