So you think a 15 year old in his first season in racing who scores double figures in his last meeting , won races at most tracks he visited for the first time and averaged nearly five this year will not get a team place in the NL next season?

    why is that then?

Whilst I will probably be wrong in assuming he may be considered for a Bears spot I will put my season ticket money on Kelly being in the NL next season and having a choice of clubs to pick from.

I would hope he does get a NDL ride, it is after all supposed to be a development league but sadly it seems to be over populated by career third tier riders and veterans.

I think the last “natural” was Drew Kemp and he was dropped by Sheffield.

I would rather see them have another season in the NL to give them more experience and hit 8 point averages to show that they are ready to step up.

Nevertheless, good luck to the Thompsons.

Probably so but Sheffield's decision was much criticised on here and Kemp actually had a decent average.

.... err .... unless they go the way of Jack Parkinson-Blackburn, Jack Smith, Jack Thomas, Georgie Wood, Zach Wajtknecht, Henry Atkins, Danton Hume and Jordan Jenkins, all of whom have been knocked back by the CL, lost confidence or given up.

To promote two 15 year olds that can’t even get a 7 point average in the NL just so you can have a powerful top five is poor judgment and not done at all for the benefit of the Thompsons.

I would say the Thompson boys are better riders than those you've named, every so often naturals come along (the last one was Dan Bewley) and they need to progress quickly, anyway some of those on your list aren't finished yet.

I'm shocked looking at NL or junior teams how many decent prospects scoring well then appear to have quit. I wonder if lack of opportunity to progress to div 2 is one of the reasons, owing to the strength of d2 dicision these days.

Lack of opportunity is certainly a factor, as is cost, look at the equipment some of these beginners have, I can remember the day when some internationals turned up with one bike on a rack on the back of the car. It's good that we now have more opportunities for under age riders but a young bloke should be able to afford to race and many can't.

And I respect yours. Who do you support out of interest?

I’m a Lynn fan and at various points last season Cook, Riss, Jorgensen, MPT, Proctor, Andersen, S Lambert and Kerr all had teams in the Championship and I can honestly say that it didn’t make me see them any differently in terms of a team representing my club.

Redcar but I'm not a frequent visitor, I'm getting on a bit, not always well and unfit to drive, I started in the 50s and would travel all over to the big meetings or away matches for my local Halifax and Bradford clubs.

Loads of reasons ahead of doubling up why speedway is where it is ie poor racing, poor stadia, too expensive etc. I don’t believe doubling up really matters to many people and certainly doesn’t have anything to do with attracting new customers. I accept that fixed race night has had a negative affect on a few tracks but IMO they are essential if people want to avoid fixture clashes both in the UK and abroad. You simply can’t have riders needing to be in two places on the same night like we’ve had before.

Doubling up matters to me but I respect your opinion.

Not now the race night issue has been addressed. Doubling up is way down speedways list of problems.

But fixed race nights are way up it! Doubling up removes much of the sport's credibility, you see a three quarters empty and decaying stadium on TV and Pearson busily telling everyone how many teams each rider will be riding for this week, It's just Mickey Mouse stuff.

If it's right that redcar have signed Danny Phillips and that's a big IF, do the fans think he is better than Tom woolley ???????

He might score an odd point more but I doubt he's a better bloke to have around and Tom looks like he might improve a little.

Interesting that even before the AGM clubs are announcing riders signed and riders released ( Kyle Bickley, an upcoming Brit released before the AGM has even started)

This being the case then the promoters surely know exactly what's been decided on points limits etc . We have clubs moving divisions yet no one as ' officially ' been accepted anywhere .

Sounds like it's already decided and the AGM will see the richer clubs get what they want,( bigger points limit) .

The TV deal may have saved the ' premiership ' , it hasn't saved the sport.

This has been the case for a few years, there are pre-conference meetings and the actual conference is just for rubber stamping and a few final details...Oh and a nice biscuit selection.

Not sure who i going to replace Rasmus who could have the season he's had, who is available and would fit average wise other than someone on that list or already contracted somewhere else.

Lawson seemed cagey in recent Speedway Star interview as if he had a move eyed up and is Glasgow asset, King said in this weeks SS he is looking for a Championship Club, Wells has indicated he is moving and Morris and Summers seem to be linked with various Clubs.

Who would you want outside of that list Foamfence?

I'm not sure, I'd probably make two changes and have a more solid look but from what people are saying a lot of clubs already have ideas of who they want and some already have a full line-up, subject to final confirmation of the averages.

Really? Lawson and King would be fine replacements for Jensen - how do you know he wasn’t a one season wonder? Even if he wasn’t , it’s hardly like he was that far ahead of King or Lawson in the final averages .

I don't know whether he was a one season wonder but the indications are that he is a rider on the up, the other two are riders who are (in my opinion) past their best, irrespective of what the averages say. Glasgow are supposed to be a club of ambition who aren't afraid to invest in quality but then again, I have no more idea who is in their sights than anyone else here.

    Possibly.

But then again there’s older young riders who have found it too much:

Jack Smith, Parkinson-Blackburn, Wajtknecht, Jacobs, Bailey, Knight, Thomas, Wood and Atkins.

Something has gone wrong for these lads and I’d hate to see Palin get the stuffing knocked out of him and disappear.

Is one year’s NL experience really enough?

That has always been the case and will continue to happen, on the other hand, if you keep them protected too long they tend to stop at that level.
