Good to see Mike Sykes of M&S Van and Truck Rental renewing their main team sponsorship of The Roobins. Was chatting to him the other day at their Cheney Manor base...discounts for speedway fans. Team Australia based at Stonehouse Farm, Lydiard Millicent now. -
Poole will walk it, Hansi is a great signing... doesn't make for an interesting season again as the Elite line-ups get weaker and inevitably crowds reduce, usual boring stuff. Should be a bumper crowd(weather permitting) up on Blunsdon Hill on Easter Sunday for the visit of The Dorset Knobs, and "Return to The Abbey" special programme/events. Top 4 finish for The Budgies I reckons. And The Mancs look good for second place. Wolves could go well.

And Lord Lucan was probably the most famous. I will try not to...anyway don't think he would be allowed to travel to Vietnam he hates flying anyway.

Very good signing for The Roobins...will do well at Blunsdon, as his starts are his strength. Will be fully commited like the other Aussie lads in the team. -
I was at that one...was sat in the main stand with a couple of hundred others when he smashed into the marshall. Got a right rollicking from Drury. Never liked the young sulky sod since then.

Swindon is about the same distance from Coventry as Poole, they normally both bring no more than a couple of hundred, around the same I would say. The Grand Finals against the Bees and Pirates showed over 5000 for the Bees visit, and only 2700 for Poole, the same as a league match. Although for the Pirates league visits the Blunsdon crowds more or less double, and they are by far the largest draw for the home fans as they are normally the top team in the league. Swindon's away support is pretty good, though nowhere near the 60s/70s/80s levels when they took 500 fans to Edinburgh on the Mad Wellie Express, and got over 10000 for some home meetings. Most teams away support could fit into a minibus thesedays. -

Crowds averaged around 1300-1400 last season, went up from around 1200 to 1500 when Wardy was riding...up to 2500 for the Knobs visits. Then don't know if they include the approx. 400 season-ticket holders, freeloaders, guests, and hangers-on. Were almost 2000 10 years ago in the Adams era.. Crowds will shoot up when the new stadium opens, and hopefully sustain. Needs to be properly promoted in surrounding areas as well, as The Roobins attract fans from places such as Bristol, Bath, Oxford, Reading, Southampton, Cheltenham, Gloucester, etc., so there's a massive catchment area, and they need to capitalise on this. The new "Robins Farm" pub/carvery opens on the 15th. of this month, just a stones throw from the new stadium. Pre/post match booze and grub...plenty of places in that area now. -

TWELVE Oaks near Highworth is a massive site...used to use the Driving Range there. My missus said she ain't going again until the new stadium is built, probably quite a few that attended The El Tel Farewell feel that way...may have to wait a bloody long time then! -

No...moved to Swindon in '67, when they shared Champion Hill with those posh blokes called Corinthian Casuals, and haven't been to an Amlet game since at the new ground. -

As far as I know this year's FA Cup/Carling Cup Finals, The World Athletics Championships, and the British speedway GP, and England Rugby and Swindon Town FC will be ground-sharing in the new 80,000-seater stadium aptly named The Rosco Arena. Will bring millions of pounds into the local economy. My main concern is have the back-straight bogs been incorporated, and the lack of grass banks means people will be refused entry if they bring their own seats? -

It's amazing how quickly these new stadiums can be erected now...the lorries arrived yesterday and the stadium was more or less clicked into place like Lego overnight...just waiting for the retractable roof to be fitted now. -

Patesy also played in crap Chelsea teams, was a good signing for The Addicks, saw him play against The Arsenal in the old Div 1 days when they shared Selhurst Park with The Palace, never played much for The Gunners when they surprisingly signed him, should have stayed at Charlton Athletic IMO. -
Good list, but Anders, Ole, Erik, and Tai wont be happy with it.

That big airy monster from Highbury, played in some crap Chelsea sides, and even turned out for the pride of sarf London, The Amlet, in later years. Can remember Pete Munday smacking Anders in the Blunsdon pits as loads ran over to watch the excitement. My first game as an Arsenal fan was in 1966, we beat The Ammers 2-1, Moore and Hurst playing in the first game after The World Cup win. Big crowd, great atmosphere, never went back to The Valley after that! -

The same Briggo that rode for those famous Wiltshire Robins. He was at the Abbey Farewell Meeting(which was not a farewell!) in October, did a few laps on an old Jap machine with Broady, Briggo wearing a blue boiler suit, and The Red Devil in red, Was itching to go full-throttle! Just shows how popular speedway was in the 60s, think he came runner-up also in another year, but voting was rigged by the Beeb so a motor-cyclist didn't win it. Moore and Hurst also my heroes that year, after Armstrong and McLintock at Arsenal. Will be worth reading the Mooro book, after I finish Arry Redknapp and AP McCoy auto-biogs. -

Great rider, always one of the best away riders seen at Blunsdon, and some good battles with Briggo, Ashby, Kilby, Broady. Memorable 11 points scored at Swindon for GB v. Sweden 1968 in front of 12000, GB winning, big scores from Ashby Broady and brother Eric. -

My next-door neighbour who is 10, and his Mum loved their first visit to Blunsdon, thing is cant go again in school-term as the late finish meant he was kipping in class the next day. Said he was bored between races, but loved the crashes! -
