Yes I totally agree Covatti and Ellis would have been so much better than Barker or Bellego as some have said. What average would Bellego be? Tbf though would still be the strongest side I've seen yet. Another name into the hat although the team would face a rejigle is Rasmus Jensen with Cook and Wells at Glasgow having Jensen would be too top heavy but obviously means Rowe in the main body and weaker reserves.

I’m not entirely sure about Bellego’s average but I think he last rode in the championship in 2016 averaging 7.63. I’m not sure if his PL average would supersede this.

Adam Ellis, Connor Mountain and Nathan Stoneman for me. As much as I like Covatti and would love to see him back as a second heat leader I do question it. We still need a solid 1-5 whilst starting Rowe at reserve. I think Covatti will be at Poole anyway. Same with Zach Cook he looked good but means no Roww at reserve.

We could have fitted both Ellis and Covatti into the team and a 4 point Aussie at reserve but Gazza went down the Barker route. Maybe Ellis or Covatti weren’t available (or both). There will be lots of pressure on both Barker and Bates to score consistently.

  3. I’m not too disappointed Harris has departed, he’s been a brilliant servant to British Speedway but I think his best days are behind him and I’m guessing he is costly.

I’d love to see Covatti and Rowe back, and build from there. I’d also love to see Charles Wright return but on a 9+ average there isn’t any value there. I’d take Jake Allen back but I’m not sure if he’s burnt his bridges with the promotion.

I don’t believe moving back to a Wednesday from a Thursday would make any difference to crowd levels.

Didn’t Ford say they’ve dropped by 25% (can’t recall the exact figure) with the change of race night ? Has it seemed a visibly  smaller crowd this year ?

  5. I think you need to read between the lines here. This seems like posturing ahead of the AGM by Ford IMO. He wants Wednesday night racing to protect his business interests which is fair enough - the timing is ahead of the AGM though to lay a marker to other Promoters. Would the top league survive with just 6 teams ? I don’t know I’m speculating but I suspect he has no intention of dropping down he just wants a change of race nights and is letting other promoters know this ahead of the AGM. Also whatever price he wants for the club is less likely to be achieved if Poole are in the 2nd tier. Just my opinion of course not being close to Poole or Ford before someone hijacks my post!

  6. Like many I thought the racing was v poor and the meeting instantly forgettable. It’s not a cheap day so  the organisers really need to sort this out (last year at Cardiff was just as crap).

There is nothing wrong with the riders, look what happened in the Polish GP when you give the boys a decent track. I said after last year I’d give it one more year but not again for me unless assurances are made to sort the track out. Also this is a big event and the overall pre event entertainment is poor IMO, the organisers have got complacent. The highlight of the day was Charles Wright ! Well done Charles

    Jake Allen

    Full teams

Line-ups: Sheffield - 1. Danny King, 2. Drew Kemp, 3. Ty Proctor, 4. Broc Nicol, 5. Jake Allen (Guest), 6. Simon Lambert (Guest), 7. Josh MacDonald - Team Manager Simon Stead
Somerset - 1. Rory Schlein, 2. Todd Kurtz, 3. Valentin Grobauer, 4. Stefan Nielsen (Guest), 5. Chris Harris, 6. Anders Rowe, 7. Henry Atkins - Team Manager Garry May

Somerset significantly weakened by the loss of Covatti he was flying - with the greatest of respect to Nielsen he’s unlikely to get anywhere near Nico’s  scoring. Sheffield stronger with Allen for Howarth assuming Jake is now fully fit IMO. This should be a comfortable home win.

So back home after an exhilarating if somewhat  avoidably elongated meeting and I can't help smiling at some of the expected anti-Poole comments from the usual suspects on here.

Yes the track developed a rut/hole on the 3rd/4th bend apex but its usually the 1st/2nd bend that most complain about?!  Considering the track on Good Friday when Swindon won easily was supposedly 'the worst its ever been', then I do believe Swindon today were just looking for excuses. Early race times were some of the fastest this season - The Robins didn't get a heat advantage til heat 12!!

Re Musielak - There was talk in the pits before the meeting started that he was unfit to ride with the after-effects of the similar shoulder injury to Brady's. With Lampart also missing, Musielak was going to take one ride, probably tail off and then withdraw from the meeting. The fact that he crashed was a little too much. As he walked back to the pits, Rosco came out and gesticulated 'enough'!!

Finally for those that stayed to see the Rider of the Day award presentation and interview (with Richie Worrall) they will have heard him applaud the track staff for doing ' an awesome job' in challenging circumstances ie Warm sunny and breezy with the threat of rain from the west.

An unexpected win for the Pirates despite some very strange decisions from the Reading-based, Swindon-supporting ref - Dave Robinson!!  If he's officiating again this evening at Blunsdon then Swindon are in for a big win!!

Mate no Reading fan would want Swindon to do well and vice versa - there was always intense rivalry between the two teams, so there is no way Dave Robinson would support Swindon. As a true Reading Racer at heart (followed them for over 30 years), you’d have to get Paul McKenna to do a job on me to support the old enemy(And even then I reckon my default position would be to support whoever the opposition were!) I hope all the riders recover from this morning.

Good match on a very pleasant evening. Some real ding dong racing going on from both sides with Harris and Wright spectacular particularly considering Wright wrote his no.1 bike off early on. Rebels simply not strong enough in depth with poor returns lower down and Kurtz his usual inconsistent self.

Bears solid throughout, although Palm-Toft didn't get a no.1's score his heat win from the back was spectacular. Bacon, Stewart and Greaves were very good considering their lack of laps around the place. Heat 15 was a race to be remembered.

crowd looked very sparse and the general look of the place was very neglected. Large Weeds at the turnstiles to greet you, nettles growing through the seating areas on the back straight and the tannoy was inaudible .

whilst there was very little atmosphere around the place met some very pleasant and knowledgable Rebels fans who's main gripe was the fact that the ' concession ' price had been done away with so they had to pay more than last season when they were in the Premiership.

    strange but true!

Thanks for the update. The crowds seem quite a bit down on last year. I think it’s a combination of the wrong race night (they should have reverted back to Fridays in the lower league it kick started the weekend and had a feel good factor) and the wrong team - no crowd favourites - Wright Allen or BWD . I understand they have also removed or capped the OAP concession (there were always a lot of seniors at Somerset)  and this may have turned away quite a few away who are now maybe picking their meetings. Add in the woeful presentation and it’s no surprise the crowds are down. The only thing constant is it’s still a cracking race track and regularly produced excellent speedway races. I had been a regular for 6 years up to the change in race nights to Weds which due to work commitments now means I can’t attend (we used to go as a family of 5) we can now only attend the odd meeting when I’m on leave. It’s also very quiet on the forum from Rebels fans this season - where has everyone gone ???
