  1. I just hope he goes out there feeling no pressure. If he concentrates on doing 4 laps each time he goes out, he will do his job.

I really believe he has a good future in speedway and I just hope he gets it right.

    Totally agree.

At this level, races really are four laps long; meaning chances to pass will come. You don't have to go flat out in the first lap to ensure points.

Good luck to Kelsey tonight and the rest of the Eagles.

  2. Poland declare a result well before heat 10 whilst in Sweden it after heat 8!

The rule is a sensible one given the nature of the weather in recent years.

I don't see the Poles and Swedes moaning about abandoned meetings.

But then they probably moan less than your average UK Speedway fan!

Declare it when you like but don't charge me full price for less than a full 15 heats. Proper refunds need to be in place for fans; otherwise I go with Semion and will stay away when poor weather threatens.

Fans have a choice, as well as promoter's. Next time I am in the area and the black clouds appear, I will stay away.

  3. The race to heat ten.

That is what speedway has become when rain threatens.

Let's press on as fast as we can and get to heat ten is the mantra from promoters. It is all about getting a result.

On the one hand it saves the costs of re-staging and the diffculties of finding a date (in an eight-team league but that's another story) but on the other it short changes the fans.

We had nine races and I read on here it will give me a £1 discount for another meeting, although I heard no announcement at the stadium about this.

I would support "calling a meeting" after heat ten IF fans were given a discount on a later meeting to take account of the uncompleted races. After all, the promoters do not have to pay the riders full whack.

  4.

Is there any substance to the possibility of the Lakeside licence switching to Kent Kings ir more mere BSF speculation. These comments do not match into what I am reading on the Lakeside Hammers press releases and isn't their future at Arena essex Stadium assured until the end of 2018 anyway?

Speedway Star says Lakeside at this moment cannot commit to 2016.

  5. Ah yes the old 'independent management' argument solves everything!!?

Nobody has been able to name anyone (either individually or as a committee) that is truly independent ie without any allegiance past or present to any club!!

The independent person could come from a non-speedway background

  6. bit like Sandu at Coventry some promotors do not not want an independent management running the sport which is what it needs so there is no conflict of intereste Imo

    Agree entirely KingBee.

    Independent management would strengthen speedway.

  7. 1. Good job you were not in charge of The Nuremburg Trials with that stance. Everyone would have walked free.

2/3/4. More or less all the same rhetoric, so I've lumped them together. However, to summarise, and hopefully put some 'meat on the bones', could you please enlighten us by answering:

    - What exactly should Lakeside have led, and why?

    - What more could Lakeside have done, and how?

Point 1: It is Speedway Control Bureau - I read that as controlling but not setting the policy. So SCB can do rules and regs but the power rests with the BSPA. I have read this week that the SCB chairman is doing a tour of all speedway tracks to speak to all sorts of people about the state of the sport. He hopes to talk to the BSPA, the report said. So, I think it is the BSPA that is in charge.

Not sure trials in Nuremberg is a suitable analogy.

In relation to the other points, I maybe attached too much hope in the fact that a few years ago Lakeside had new promoters. In Jon they had the speedway guru and in Stuart, a successful businessman. Frankly, I hoped the two together would make the sport see sense.

It didn't happen, which is a pity. (I know Jon has been criticised for some of his ideas but at least he tried to come up with something new).

Maybe Jon and Stuart became worn down by the status quo.

  8. What a great meeting for the new guys, Hopwood l have to say if he was an opposition i rather him on my side then against the way he rode, Garry on the other hand looked nothing like the gary i remember, maybe race rusty but have to say rather unfair to put in the run of the season and expect him to do will with being out of the sport for so long. if it was me i run him for a few meetings until Dugard is fit again, Not sure what the update on Georgie is as that was right in front of me but i was unable to see how he landed. hope he is ok, looking forward to Coventry at the weekend, and onto Buxton sunday. Is it possible that a any other place can be more of a dump then Stoke Speedway.

Oh i ment to ask was that BWD dad having a spin or his Grandad?

Georgie high-side and landed on his shoulder.

    Poor Darrin - granddad

  9. Never a truer word spoken.

If nothing else, last night showed the exact reasons why a promoter should never be allowed to be 'micman'. Why on earth it has been allowed to happen for so long, I'll never know.

His squeal like a pig was appalling, he never should be allowed to entice the crowd in the manner he did either, nor should he be allowed to attempt to influence the referee's decision. As for his behaviour in the pits, words truly fail me!

I have seen and heard warnings given by referees to mic men over comments made. As I understand it the mic man is a licensed official.

  10.

The issue is that meetings are far to easily called off at heat 10 and DONT carry on. But nobody in power will admit to this, they'll all claim this "safety" bullrubbish. Because 50% of the time when its raining at heat 10, it suit the promoter to call it off and pay a few ££ on points money!

Very true, there is an attitude around of let's rush it through and get to heat ten.

  11. Speedway cannot afford a whole raft of riders to be full time. There are not enough people on the terraces.

Riders in the NL are employed elsewhere and speedway is a bit of a (sometimes) paid hobby. Grasstrack is similar.

Much of NL racing is at weekends and does not involve time off work.

There used to be a lot of Saturday racing in the BL and most riders could juggle a job and ride, as others have pointed out on this thread. Doubling up/down was unheard of and in reality riders couldn't do it because of work commitments.

Not sure what the solution is for the EL. I agree with the earlier comment about the PL.

  12. Did anyone really think that last night was entertaining ? Apart from Puk sticking his front wheel over the white line out of turn and driving past the oppostion i think it was a bit of a snore fest.

Have to feel for PK last night, He was getting badly tailed off and not just by the Lynn Heat leaders. However after he got smashed up at Saddlebow back in the early Norties I dont think Lynn has been one of his most favourite tracks.

It wasn't a good meeting either when Wolves came earlier in the season. Lambert did liven that one

  13. Shall we have some predictions for the weekend?

Away Stoke I think we will win by 8

Home against Coventry a win by 25

    Gary to get 7 & paid 9

That would count as a very good weekend if that happens.

I think Coventry will do better than that, although injury has weakened them

  14.

Go to the club's official website at http://www.lakesidehammers.com/ for details e.g. For the £5 admission tickets to apply, they should be purchase in advance.

    Thanks for the update Bryn.

That is a very good idea, indeed. It will give Lakeside a lot of email addresses which they will subsequently be able to use to promote further fixtures.

Hopefully they will build up a big database.

I know some people will complain that the tickets have to be bought in advance but the database will be important in the future.

  15. I see Lakeside are doing fiver admission for the Coventry match.

Jon Cook says it is pretty good value - excellent value in truth. Happy to give plenty of praise to Lakeside for this.

The key is being able to turn a healthy proportion of the new or occasional visitors into (fairly) regulars. That is far easier said than done but the first job is to get people through the door, which this should do.

Coventry should put on a good show so fingers crossed.

  16. Will be there*

    About the*

thank you. I am having trouble with the old keyboard. Needs new batteries. Like me!

I can't wait to find out what the categories for the awards are.

Looks like it is going to be much more than Rider of the Year. That's a tough one.

Someone should arrange for Martin and Connor to get an award with a standing ovation.

  17. My goodness you really are struggling to dig your way out of that hole. Having been totally unable to explain why Lakeside, the club have been any mor e responsible than anyone else for falling attendances you now move the goalposts to focus on an individual who is not the club, merely one member o f the promotional team.

Just as Swindon fans have had to explain to the intellectually challenged at Rosco the Swindon manager is not the same as Rosco the Team GB manager, Cooks role on the MC is not the same as his position as on the Lakeside promotional team.

The principle of collective responsibily on the MC or any other committee means all committee members bear equal resposibility for the committees decisions. Notwithstanding that point the MC of the BSPA are not the body with overall responsibility for the sport , that is the Speedwáy Contriol Bureau ( the clue is in the i ) and the buck ultimately stops with them. They, above all else must carry can for weak leadership.

So once again despite your persistent trolling of Lakeside threads you have once again failed to back up your original claim that Lakeside bear major responsibility for the state the sport is in .. You might as well either quit while you are behind or go off and start a Jon Cook thread because your spurious claims are misplaced on an Arena Essex thread, which started off as a perfectly reasonable enquiry about the clubs future before you jumped in.

    I don't troll Lakeside threads.

You have one opinion about the club; mine is the polar opposite. However, I will still go when I can.

Please accept that views will differ. Others on here have agreed with my point-how it became anti-Poole is beyond me. I cannot agree with your view about the SCB - it controls what it is given to control.

The real power is with the promoters and I feel Lakeside have been in a position in the past to do more to change things. They haven't taken those chances, for whatever reason.

British speedway needs some strong leadership. I long hoped Lakeside would lead.

Now, of course, the club has bigger issues and obviously will concentrate on a new stadium.

I have no axe to grind but my honest opinion is that Lakeside could have done more.
