  1. I am completing the Long Eaton 1996 team file for the Speedway Researcher site and have a query about the Scottish Monarchs v Long Eaton match on 5th May 1996.

I am looking for details from a marked programme for confirmation of the points and bonus points for Long Eaton's Stonehewer & Venegas in this match.

The Speedway Star heat details give Stonehewer 10 + 1 and Venegas 5 +1.  However, match scorers and the Long Eaton Speedway Star Track Review show Sonehewer 9 + 2 and Venegas 6 + 0.

Heat 4 is the likely issue.  Speedway Star heat details shows Stonehewer 1st and Venegas 2nd.  Was this correct or did Venegas win this heat from Stonehewer?

Thanks for any assistance you can give.

  2. I have checked my marked programme for the Stoke v Nottingham junior match and agree with the information provided by BL65.  I can also add the following:

    Heat 1: Walsh (fell)

    Heat 3: 66.9

    Heat 4: 69.9

Heat 5: Walsh (f.ns), Webb (exc, time) 74.5

I also do not have the time for heat 6.

  3. Peterborough took part in the National Junior League (Central) in 1990 finishing last out of 6 teams with 7 points from 10 matches.  They rode home and away against Ipswich, Long Eaton, Milton Keynes, Rye House and Stoke.

The league matches against Long Eaton were:

    27th July - Peterborough 20 - 09 Long Eaton

    26th September - Long Eaton 15 - 15 Peterborough

In addition, Long Eaton and Peterborough also faced each other in home and away challenge matches as follows:

    28th March - Long Eaton 09 - 14 Peterborough

    30th March - Peterborough 13 - 17 Long Eaton

On 5th October Peterborough hosted a junior 4tt.

    Peterborough 15 Long Eaton 28 Arena-Essex 26 Ipswich 24

Speedway Star gave scorers for the league matches and I have marked programmes for some of the junior matches featuring Long Eaton.

Let me know if you want me to provide extra information from the Star or my marked programmes

The 14th July and 25th July matches you mentioned both featured Glasgow in the main match.  If you have the junior heat details, Dave Allan (daveallan81) would be interested in them for his Speedway Researcher files.

  5. The 1991 Sunbrite Division 2 Reserves League (Central) was won by Sheffield (36 points).  Other teams in the league were Milton Keynes (25), Peterborough (18), Nottingham (16) and Stoke (05).  Teams rode against each other home and away twice with a bonus point being awarded for aggregate victory.  Two bonus points available against each opposition.

Long Eaton changed their name to Nottingham during the season, but were still referred to as Long Eaton for a number of the fixtures.

    The Peterborough results were:

    Home

    26/04 v Long Eaton lost 13-17

    03/05 v Milton Keynes lost 13-16

    24/05 v Sheffield lost 08-21

    31/05 v Stoke won 15-14

    05/07 v Sheffield lost 14-16

    09/08 v Milton Keynes won 20-10

    06/09 v Long Eaton won 19-11

    13/09 v Stoke won 25-05

    Away

10/04 at Long Eaton lost 05-25

21/05 at Milton Keynes lost 08-22

10/07 at Long Eaton won 19-11

27/08 at Milton Keynes lost 09-15

    05/09 at Sheffield lost 07-23

    03/10 at Sheffield lost 10-20

    05/10 at Stoke won 16-14

    05/10 at Stoke won 16-14

Note two matches at Stoke on 05/10.  These were two matches with same result but with different scorers.

Speedway Star gave the heat details in their 1991 coverage.  Let me know if you need any further information.

  10. To add to Dave Allan's post I can confirm from Speedway Star reports that all of the dates for the NJL (Central) matches are correct with the following exceptions.

Long Eaton v Mildenhall was postponed on 26 August, 7 October and 14 October.  The match was held on 18 October at Mildenhall.  No junior match was held at Long Eaton on 16 September.

Stoke v Long Eaton on 22 August was abandoned heat 4 due to rain with score of 14-9.  The match was held on 26 September.

Speedway Star did not report the result of the Mildenhall v Stoke match

  11. The meeting mentioned at Long Eaton on 23 March was a challenge match. Peterborough also rode at Long Eaton on 17 August in what was described on the race card as a junior challenge match. The score was Long Eaton 8 Peterborough 10. This corresponds with the CJL results grid in the season summary in Speedway Star dated 3 December 1983, so I believe this would be the CJL match.

Coventry were due to have ridden at Long Eaton on 10 August, but this match was replaced at 24 hours notice by Leicester as Coventry withdrew from the league to be replaced by Peterborough.

  12. Peterborough Juniors did not race at Long Eaton in 1982 as Long Eaton were not in the AJL that year, only in the CJL a league that Peterborough did not take part in.

16th September 1982 Ipswich v Peterborough (followed Ipswich v Reading)

Ipswich: 1. Andy Nightingale, 2. Andy Harris, 3. Roger Dickerson

Peterborough: 1. Adrian Hume, 2. David Ashby, 3. Ian Gutteridge

Heat 1: Harris, Nightingale, Ashby, Hume (ef), 65.5 05-01 05-01

Heat 2: Nightingale, Ashby, Dickerson (FX), Gutteridge (FX), 63.6 03-02 08-03

    Heat 3: Hume, Harris, Dickerson, Gutteridge, 65.3 03-03 11-06

7th September 1986 Boston v Peterborough (followed Boston v Peterborough)

Boston: 1. Jon Cooper, 2. Bruce Richards, 3. Dave Bradbury, 4. Tony Yates

Peterborough: 1. John Stokes, 2. Mike May, 3. Andrew Stokes, 4. Stuart Thompson

    Heat 1; J. Stokes, May, Cooper, Richards (fell), 65.3 01-05 01-05

  13. 02/05 Ipswich World Championship British Semi-Final - Smith & Doncaster finished tied on 11 - any run-off or outright winner?

Speedway Star 11 May match report states "there was confusion about the winner of the meeting but eventually Smith was given the verdict as he had a faster winning time than Doncaster who also scored 11".  There was also a complicated run-off procedure caused by 5 riders finishing on 8 points and resulted in 4 races to decide the 3 riders who qualified to the British Final.

30/09 Exeter South West Open Championship winner: Dean Garton - CONFIRM DATE & WINNER

Speedway Star 28 September - Exeter stage their special Speedtrack meeting next Monday with riders competing on grasstrack machinery.  No subsequent report of meeting provided.

07/10 Exeter Tony Sanford Memorial 4TT abandoned after heat 3 - CONFIRM DATE & SCORE AT TIME OF ABNDONMENT

Speedway Star 19 October - Match report for 7 October  "The riders bravely attempted to put on a show in the Tony Sandford Memorial Fours despite constant drizzle which started at 7 pm.  But it was to no avail as Colin Cook spun round and crashed spectacularly on the  first bend of heat 3 and it didn't take referee Mick Barnes long to call a halt after that."  No heat results given and no further details in the Exeter write up in the same issue.

  14. The Birmingham Daily Gazette of  13 August 1951 stated that the challenge match between Long Eaton and Cradley Heath was cancelled due to the heavy rain. It went on to say that Torrential rain flooded Swindon’s track causing the postponement of the Third Division match against Wolverhampton.

When I am back home next week, I will check my Long Eaton programmes for before and after the 11th to confirm this date.

  15. From Speedway Star Track Reviews the results you have for Peterborough v Milton Keynes and Arena-Essex v Peterborough are correct.

The Milton Keynes v Peterborough result on 27/08/1991 was 51-38 not 51-39

Stephen Davies 8, Mark Lyndon 8, Robbie Fuller 6 , Richard Hellsen 6, Kevin Jolly 6, Tim Hunter 4, Gary Tagg 0.

The Peterborough v Arena-Essex result on 04/10/1991 was 43-47 not 47-43.  The original result was 47-43, but a Speedway Control Board investigation  into allegations that Panthers had tracked an ineligible rider against Arena-Essex - Ipswich loanee Craig Hyde - resulted in the Aussie's points being docked from Peterborough's total.  Result amended to 43-47.

The final for/ against race points totals for the Gold Cup south group taken from a  final table in Speedway Star dated 29/06/1991 were as follows:

    Arena-Essex 441-454

    Exeter 492-405

    Hackney 418-476

    Milton Keynes 445-455

    Peterborough 483-408

    Rye House 409-490

  16. Hi Dave

From Speedway Star I can advise as follows:

    24/07 at Oxford Andy's Skolars 31 v Jan's Stars 19 v Tatum's Terrors 27

05/08 at Peterborough second semi final score when abandoned after heat 7 was Wimbledon 11 v Eastbourne 13 v Middlesbrough 9 v Peterborough 9

  17. The Speedway Star may be correct about Scunthorpe using 8 riders without using rider replacement. I attended the Peterborough v Boston (New National League) match on 31 May 1976 where Boston used 8 riders without using rider replacement. The riders were: No1. Billy Burton 5 8+1, No2. Stuart Cope 5 5+1, No3. Rob Hollingworth 5 11, No4 Steve Clarke 2 1+1, No5 Paul Gilbert 4 3+1, No6 Dave Allen 2 2, No7 Ron Cooper 2 2, No8 Derek Harrison 1 1+1.

Derek Harrison replaced Ron Cooper in heat 2. The 1977 Speedway Yearbook concurs with the 8 x Boston scorers for this meeting.

According to the Boston programme of 6 June 1976, Ron Cooper somehow got lost traveling from his Leicester base to Peterborough, missing one ride.

Therefore it must have been in the rules at that time to allow for this situation.
