Why was Doyle not off 15 after BWD stayed down with Wolves on a 5-1?

    This is the rule:

If the Referee stops a heat, following an incident or accident, where the rider causing the stoppage and his team partner were in third and fourth place and a re-run is called with one of those riders excluded, the Referee has the sole discretion to order that the remaining team partner will start on a 15 metre handicap in gate position c or d (the opposing team does not change positions).

Note that it says at the referee's discretion, which may fall in line with this explanation, posted on Speedway Updates earlier tonight, in answer to the same question:

Referee's choice, if he feels the rider had a chance to pass in this case the second place rider he will not be put on 15m.....no chance and the 15m comes into play

It's down to clubs to manage themselves a lot better in my opinion.

Incognito, there's the crux of the matter. Najjer is entirely correct, as recent events have shown, there are clubs out there who don't work with any kind of financial prudence, they have a surfeit of ambition, which isn't matched by their financial ability to support it, and those clubs who do 'Cut their Cloth' accordingly are being asked to lower their standards yet again.

If you think it's a £10 sport as you have stated, please, please, please, throw your hat in the ring and come and show the existing promotions how it can be done. I think as Grachan has suggested, you'll soon be looking for another solution.

Unless you are posting rather "tongue in cheek"? The FRN was poorly thought through ( or did the Premiership teams capitulate on which nights they could use? Were they outvoted? ) by promoters and fans if they believed all clubs could pull in a "decent" crowd on a different night - especially on a Monday, because the sport was so enticing and irresistible.   There are no other nights available after taking in Poland, Sweden, Denmark  and the FIM events, so it seems like it was a calculated gamble by the BPSA. And one that went so very wrong. I think we will just about get what the punters want and will "buy", when we give up using those riders in demand elsewhere IF there is still an appetite for speedway racing in the UK.

When you consider that the preferred FRN's were Monday & THURSDAY.......Simple answer....Yes!

Vissing has been bought in for one sole purpose. Not be available tomorrow at Poole so Doyle, Holder, greebo and bwd can take his rides ensuring Somerset get past Poole in the KO cup. A week or so after that his services will be dispensed with.

It could pay you to talk to a few of your Poole/Somerset contacts regarding the actual truth behind your above assertion!...........In the meantime, I think you should file it along with all those America didn't go to the moon theories. :P

That’s not the point ! You don’t chuck a race in just because  your 4th what if the KL pair packed up ?

Firstly, thanks for your reply, but please tell me where I said it was ok?

Secondly, the quote above was in reply to Tellboy & was about Michael Palm Toft in Heat 14 & not Doyley, so it may pay to read the post correctly before jumping in with both feet.

Thirdly, regarding Doyle's retirement in Heat 13, you wrote this........

To which I replied, "Appeared to come out on his second bike for Heat 15, certainly looked like a fresh bike to me", which I now believe to be true.

If you have a problem with Doyle's performance, fine, I don't have an issue with that but please at least read the posts correctly if you're going to try & dig me out over them.

If you’ve not been to the OTA the pits entrance is just past the 4th  bend and open  (with no pit gate) he came out of the 3rd bend on the 3rd lap and just looked like he gave up when stone last . Of course he may have had a bike problem but it didn’t look like it

Appeared to come out on his second bike for Heat 15, certainly looked like a fresh bike to me.

Well that was a good result for Lynn.Although 4pts up with 2 to go slightly disappointed.Maybe if Toft didn't have a retirement in ht 14 we may have got more. All we need now is a constant 1-7 and a 3 pt scoring number 7:D.

Nice to see Niels back to his best, hopefully.

He was way behind at the time & even without the retirement, he would never have got in a scoring position, the rest were too quick for him on this occasion.

I think its you that needs to wake up, as to make such a rubbish statement,  you obviously were not there.  This Rebels performance was pathetic, the worst team I have seen at The Abbey this season.   Allen and Lawson just appeared to be not trying,  Wright a mere shadow of the rider when he was with us and Jeppeson clueless.   Losing is not a sin, but its how you lose that matters and apart from Doyle, Holder and Wilson Dean this team was really poor.  So unless you were there, you have no idea how bad the Rebels were.

You have a wonderful following of supporters, who are a credit to Somerset and speedway and definitely deserve better from their team.

I think I may even have spied the Confederate  flag, good on you guys, you deserve a decent team.

You're right I wasn't there, but I do know how poor they were on the night, my point is that Rebelwonderkid's post appeared to be made on the basis of the one meeting, and is not the first time he's made such posts. Whilst I wasn't at the Abbey, I have seen the team on the road this season, and from that, am sure that this was not a typical away performance, but a poor one against a very strong team on their own turf.

I think tonights win at Kings Lynn might go some way to proving my point. The first team to score 40+ pts at the Adrian Flux & first home defeat of the season for the Stars, so yes they were shocking on Monday, but that's only one meeting.

Sadly we need changes. We are ok at home but sadly too far off the pace away from home. It's a shame as they are nice guys and can be good riders but that only goes so far.

Congrats to Swindon though can only beat what's in front of them.

So on the basis of this one meeting at Swindon, the Rebels need to make changes, do they?

In that case, so do the Robins last three opponents at the Abbey......

    Rye House LOST 59-31

    Wolverhampton LOST 51-39

    Poole LOST 50-39

Even Belle Vue lost 52-38 in the Charity Shield

In fact, only Kings Lynn posted a score in the 40's. I think you're confusing being well beaten by a very good team on their own patch, with the Rebels being a bad team, which they certainly are not. If you go back over the seasons, this is a typical overreaction by yourself to a poor performance by the Rebels, although one which is in keeping with most other visitors to Wiltshire this season.

To be honest, the Rebels five performances away from home have been mixed, but OK & no worse than expected in some cases, they took a point at Rye House, with Jake Allen injured & withdrawn after his first ride. They took a point at Belle Vue, in a meeting they could have drawn, or even won, with a little good fortune. The others are not pretty reading, I'll grant you, but apart from away to Leicester, I certainly wouldn't have expected more at Wolverhampton, where the Rebels have been humped on most visits (or, in fact, all visits), and last night, which I've already covered.

So for me, no they don't need to make changes, and if they did, I'd certainly trust Garry May to choose the right time to do it, which for me is not now.

Wake up Kelvin, and don't be so soft!

  10. Well that's it, the race is all done.

The Rebels made the podium, with joint third place, after leading in the early stages.

The Winner was Hot Fuzz, The Wurzels were second, with the Rebels & Carnival in joint third.

It was all a bit of fun to promote the county, and I guess it reached a lot of people, which can't be bad, especially if it put Speedway in front of a whole new audience. Now we just have to persuade a few of them through the gates.

many thanks to all who vote, and helped keep the Rebels in with a chance for so long.

    Cheers Dave T

  11. Things not going so well for the Rebels in the World Cup of Somerset. They've dropped back to third place, although not too far behind, just a few percent.

There's still time, so if you haven't voted, please give the Rebels (and Speedway) a chance.

If you have a twitter account, you can vote on the link below & please Retweet to everyone you know.

    VOTING CLOSES AT 4PM

    Many Thanks,

  12. Today is Somerset Day. This is an initiative by Somerset County Council to celebrate all things Somerset.

People were asked to nominate what they thought was good about the county & one of those nominations was Somerset Rebels. It didn't look as though they had much chance of progressing against the giants of the county, but they have made it to the Final. Its a great way to not only promote the county & the team, but also,  I feel, the sport itself.

So if you have a minute to spare & have a twitter account, why not visit the link below & cast a vote for the Rebel.

Anything that brings the sport to a wider audience can only be a benefit

    Thanks Dave

For years, various people, fans, promoters etc. said that fixed race nights wouldn't work in Britain because clubs didn't own their stadiums and that availability is limited. This was despite the obvious advantages that fixed race nights offered in terms of reducing clashes and potentially encouraging back the top riders.

Last year we saw the BSPA actually grasp the nettle and actually make a positive decision. Monday and Wednesday was always the most obviously choice as it mean limiting disruption to both Premiership and Championship clubs, however given that not all clubs own their stadiums and that availability is limited is was unlikely all clubs would be able to achieve this from day one.

I think the solution, to allow Swindon to race half their home meetings on a Thursday, while all other clubs move to the fixed nights is the ideal compromise for the first season of fixed nights. Hopefully over time Swindon will be able to reach an agreement to allow us to fall in line with the rest of the league.

In terms of advantage, as Grachan says, this is available to both teams, so Swindon will have no more of a pool than their opponent.

On 19/04/2018 at 10:38 AM, Grachan said:

Everyone should have been riding on Thursdays. That was the day that was set to be reserved for British racing but everyone else went with Wednesday because they are Ipswich and Poole's poodles.

Incidentally, their opposition on a Thursday will also have more choice of guests if needed, so where's the advantage?

Don't think it had anything to do with compromise or curly haired dogs, more like the 11 championship clubs out voting the 8 Premiership clubs ;)

The promoters need to work on both people who live in Somerset and during the summer all the holiday resorts with info in what to do leaflets and mags and whats on mags with discounts etc. in the holiday camps, hotels etc.

Believe me when I say that at Somerset, all those things have and do happen every season.

RIDERS don't actually have a contract after October 31st

Maybe I should have used the term, 'Team Asset' PR, or even written it as follows 'it doesn't matter who holds his registration, a rider will ride where he wants to' but you clearly know the point I was making ;)

  16. Why= Matt ford can make his money back on loan fees! And he can put him in the team if he wants.

When= 2017 off season. Thats what Matt Ford does!

Not strictly true, Matt Ford can only put him in the Pirates side, if Charles wants to ride for the team. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who holds his contract, a rider will ride where he wants to & if that's not his parent club, there's not much they can do.

Sure, a promoter could stop another club talking to one of his contracted riders, but that would only have the effect of antagonising the rider, who would probably just stick two fingers up to the parent club.

  17. it isn't as though Somerset have any chance of turning over a 14 point deficit anyway.

If only it had have been just 14, we'd have been in the final now ! ;):P

I cannot believe there is not someone better than kennett to guest.

It's pretty easy to criticise when you don't know the facts. If I was feeling a little less generous, I might even say that your comment's a bit of a cheap shot really. Had you bothered to come to the meeting, you might not hold that view.

Firstly Garry asked a few of riders to guest in place of Josh, but they refused, so it wasn't for the lack of trying. So as a result he decided to go with RR at one and a guest for Paddy, and Edward answered the call very late in the day, and was prepared to come, unlike some others who were asked.

Secondly he has had some great performances at the Oaktree in the past, and at one time was extremely hard to beat around the track. Granted his more recent outing at the OTA have been nothing to write home about, but as Stuart Robson once observed when putting in a great guest performance for the Rebels, 'It's much easy to ride for a team than it is to ride against it as a visitor', which is a sentiment that EK appears to have proved tonight.

  18. It's a shocking state and fair play to CVS for coming out and amazingly admitting that the sport has become embarrassing when these things happen and coming from the best man in the business and someone that will back British Speedway all the way. it's a showing of how the low this has gone and even the die hards are waking up to the fact the sport has to change but will they make drastic and needed changes ?

    Unlikley

What amazes me is why Somerset from a business perspective would choose to run this meeting?.

One of the few GP riders in the country is guaranteed missing (which surely makes a mockery of some promoters belief that GP riders bring crowds in?) and his team will turn up with only two of their own riders..

Why would anyone go and watch this? Somerset fans will think "we have no chance after the first leg and it's only a Wolves Select" and Wolves fans will think "we are miles in front and it's not really my team so sod the M5 on a Friday"..

At an absolute push I can only think that when home teams arrange these ever increasing number of fixtures where the away team is a Mickey Mouse Select team, it is because they think they increase their chances of victory...

However, it's a victory in Competitions rendered farcical (therefore of no value) by their very own actions...

Couldn't make it up could you..?

May be you should be asking the question of who wanted the 22nd of September in the first place, certainly not Somerset. CVS can make all the statements he wishes to the contrary, but it was Wolverhampton who originally insisted on the date, and even went as far as releasing it publically without even consulting the Rebels management.

So maybe it should CVS who is the one taking the responsibility for sport becoming 'embarrassing when these things happen', as you're so quick to say 'Incognito' (Interesting name by the way, under the circumstances), rather than doing what he has done, and tried to deflect the blame towards the leagues 'New Boys'.

Is it any wonder the top tier in this country has trouble attracting enough teams to make a fully meaningful and competitive league. If it really wanted to, then it should put forward the real interest of British Speedway, and not the holy than thou, self interested, 'I'm alright Jack' attitude we have from some people. If CVS had the best interest of British Speedway at heart, and would 'Back it all the way', again as you say 'Incognito', then this could and would have been sorted to everyone's satisfaction months ago. Sorry but he's only got himself to blame for this one.
