Why? Fixture list was embargoed until Thursday to ensure everyone had time to release them at the same time. I believe that British Speedway needs the Star as, without it, there would be no central source of information. So it’s a simple trade off that the Star gets to release their information at the same time as everyone else. Not before, and not after. It’s how media works best, in my view

For fans who want to plan dates etc, the sooner information available the better. Few years ago, fixtures issued, but some dates, including British semi, were held back. When issued, I found I had planned something else on one, of the dates. Heard the speedway was brilliant, at this match, so I missed some great speedway, and the promoters missed a bit of income.

I used to buy speedway star, for the results, but gave up about 40 years ago, when I got a TV with teletext. I am not interested in speedway star, but I do like to go to matches, and I am sure promoters, both want and need all the income they can get.

I notice the fixtures are in the Speedway Star which goes to press on Tuesday so fixtures could of been released to fans earlier than yesterday if they had wanted to

This is called working with rather than against the media.

I would call it working against, rather than with the paying fans.

  3. Just read the following on Stratrax (stock cars) website.

Lots of work has been ongoing with a revamp of the Sheffield pits area to commence early March and we are in serious discussions about re -opening at least part of the back straight - We are developing Sheffiled in the coming years hopefully to become the jewel of the North and it has a much livelier fixture list in 2020 which will also feature Bangers & support formulae programme.

Interesting bit about the back straight.

I think you've forgotten to give Kyle Howarth his 2.5% reduction. I think you've Sheffield have got 6.91 left (or 6.30 if Todd is on 4.00). :t:

6.91, leaves a few possibilities; King, Wright, Riss, Tungate, Harris, Musielak, Ellis, Bewley.

  5. After the recent GB test match v Denmark, with somewhat weakened teams, I wondered about the selection of Team GB for a test match. What would your selection be for a full  strength seven man team? Assume all riders available and on reasonable form. No particular track in mind, so no horses for courses, and no tactical switches such as putting best rider at number 7. I will make my selection.

    1 Woffy

    2 King

    3 Cook

    4 Wright

    5 Lambert

    6 Ellis

    7 Bewley.

The first set of toilets are situated , by the track shop on the fourth bend, the second set in the clubhouse both including disabled loos, and temporary ones put on the back straight I believe.I

Hope the last set were removed before racing commenced.:D Would be inCONVENIENT riders having to go round them.

It was announced at the Meeting yesterday that this fixture will be on Wednesday 11th September.

Per tigers website story about CLRC  "Despite two provisional dates being announced, Tigers remain in discussions with Newcastle regarding a new date for the outstanding Championship fixture at Owlerton. This makes me feel the date is still in some doubt. they certainly have not made it very clear

  8. Did a couple of comparisons myself using Bank of England Inflation calculator.  Went to some Sheffield Eagles rugby league games during their first season, 1984. Adult admission was £2.00, which wouold equate to £6.31 in today's terms. They now charge £16.00 in ticket ordered online in advance, £18.00 on the day.

In 1979 did some bar work and remember beer was £0.30 a pint now the equivalent of £1.50, considerably cheaper than any pubs I know of. Seems leisure activities outpace inflation quite considerably.

  9. Hope the changes work out. However, have replaced Proctor when he seems to be in the best form so far this season. Replaced Nicol, but from August Proctor would have been able to take one of his R/R rides so would have been stronger there. Kurtz rode well against us but his average is down on last year. Sedgeman not raced too much recently.

    Some food for thought Brian..

I would go one step further and run initially with five riders per team..

Graded A to E with one rider from each grade or two from a lower grade if you don't want anyone from the grade above. Eg you can have two B grades rather than having an A rider..

To take subjectivity and criticism away from any third party arbiter just use averages to determine the grades with an overall mean team average set to ensure no team can cherry pick the best rider from each grade..

Twenty teams would mean 100 riders needed, race home and away once and that's 38 matches..

Teams then split into groups of five for the play offs. 1st to 5th, 6th to 10th etc etc

Home and away means another 8 matches to determine the winners of each group..

Give each group a trophy to ride for named after past iconic riders..

Maybe for the top group add in a 'play off final' to be raced by the top two teams to determine the overall seasons champions? Seems to bring decent crowds in and TV like them..

Strength of league would need to be Championship Lite I would suggest...

To make it more interesting I would run with a prize fund rather than points money and suggest £7500 a night be up for grabs with £4.5k to the winners and £3k to the losers. This gets shared as seen fit by the teams dependent on rider level but it would deliver an average £900 per rider for the winners and £600 for the losers..

A prize up for grabs will give credibility and context a meeting too in a way that just paying out points money doesn't, and can form part of any marketing to attract attention and give it value in the eyes of the wider public..

And you can then do a presentation each evening of the 'cheques'..

£14 an adult and free for U19's in Education..

800 punters would bring in £11200 without any bar and food take, car park, programmes or merchandise income..

A ridiculously low number of punters used as an example but I would suggest where most clubs currently are in terms of attendances..?

Overall, It would bring a variety of teams rather than the same visitors constantly coming which should stimulate interest and the final groups should be close as they will be against teams of around your level..

And of course a big finale should deliver well above 800!

Certainly would be a bit sceptical about any 5 man teams using R/R. Does anyone have the race formula they use for this in Denmark?

  11. Now six weeks after the decision made to call off this match. Think it is very poor that a re-staging date has not been announced. IMO should have been made as soon as the decision to call off was made.

On numerous occasions in the past there has been a  sporting event on telly when I went to  a speedway match. Simple way to watch both; press the record button on DVD/Sky + and go to speedway. Speedway promoters never had a problem accepting my money when I did this. In view of the way my loyalty  was re-paid I have re-evaluated my loyalty to speedway. Have cancelled all plans to go to any more away matches this season. Not too inclined to bother next year when England football could be in European cup and not prepared to have a fixture list likely to be amended by this. Eastbourne claim to have done cost analysis etc, but do only appear to have taken in to account the wishes of fans who also like football. I am sure there are many more like me who do not care about football and do not want speedway disrupted for this. How much will losing dedicated fans like myself (who has attended over 99% of home matches for over 50 years) cost the sport?

If Eastbourne really wanted to lessen the impact how about,

1 Immediately announcing the re-staging date.

2 Offering any Sheffield fans who had plans to attend (and still plan to come to the re-staging) a substantial discount on admission. This could work in Eastbourne's favour (a few paying reduced admission is worth more than none turning up).

3 Offer any Sheffield fans who planned to go to this match, and are unwilling or unable to attend the re-staging a complimentary DVD of the match.
